Which video card is better?

I've already got a Voodoo5 5500 AGP. It works great in old games but sucks in some of the new ones. My question is would the Hercules 3D Prophet 4500 64MB (Kyro II, right?) be a huge upgrade from where I am now? It gets great reviews and only costs $149. I'm wondering, what's the catch?

The catch is the drivers. They aren't very mature for all OSes yet. Good performance for the price (everyone agrees on that), but I don't know about all games and support. Ask everyone here about specific games you play and someone is bound to reply to you.

I play CS and Nascar 4. That's it really. I would like to be able to play Max Payne, Doom3 and Unreal2 in the next 12 months. I'm running Win98 also, how are the drivers for that OS?

Also they Kyro boards don't have T&L...just something to keep in mind.

For around $150, you can definitely do better than the Kyro II. The GeForce2 GTS, GeForce2 Pro, and the ATI 64MB Radeon are all very good cards for around that price. I have a 64MB Radeon and I love it.

If you're looking to $ave.. look into the Radeon LE. Overclocked &amp; hyper-z enabled it is the price/performance champ.

i read an interview with carmack a while ago, he said that anything less than a gf2 ultra or gts would not do Doom3 justice. they are developing it with the gf3 in mind. i trust in john carmack's ability to program, and if he says i need a gf3 to display doom3 properly, gf3 here i come!

depends what he means by &quot;Doing it Justice.&quot; Im guessing he has some pretty high standereds. Heck if it needs a GF3, a duron or P3 one gig like u have may not be enough to do it justice.

Worry about what HW you'll need to play Doom 3 when it comes out. If it's on anyone other than an id employee's hard drive in 12 months I'll eat my Nailgun . id is definitely a &quot;when it's done&quot; company.

Buy a card to run games now. If you're looking to buy a card to run games a year from now whatever you buy today will already be 1 or 2 generations behind.

I think the hacked/overclocked Radeon LE is an excellent suggestion, especially for ~$70. A GF2 GTS 64MB will generally oc to the 200/400 Pro spec, so I wouldn't spend extra for a Pro. Ultras and GF3s are pretty much for benchmarking and bragging right now and don't give you a lot of value, in my opinion. So few games use T&amp;L right now, let alone all the great stuff the GF3 can do.

As for Max Payne, see how you do in 3D Mark 2000/2001. Same engine.

Got it for $150 shipped back in december

If you're going Geforce2, stick with Elsa.. Their versions of GF2 are much better than Visiontek and Creative. Many hardcore reviews agree on this.

Texture &amp; lighting i believe, i know the lighting is corrent im not sure about the texture.
U have it in software, but im not sure if the VooDoo 5500 supports it in HW i think it may.
it makes new games go faster and i believe look better but im not sure of that

but since the PRO is only about 10 bucs more..i would get that.. most pro's overclock to ULTRA levels.. and even though they are for braggin rights! why not get more speed for ten bucs!? ( or so)
