I've never given much thought to the CPU beyond performance levels, but me and my Barton 2500 have been through some good times

The best one would have to be my current one, my A64 3200+

My Barton 2500+ was locked...so i never got very good results outta it, & my first CPU was a Palomino 1700+ which i've never bothered to OC due the other components with it being non-overclockable.

my p3 500mhz laptop.

that thing has been my workhorse for email/surfing for years. goes to show you that you don't need a ultra fast processor to do simple stuff like email and surfing the net.

Probably my current P4 2.4C chip. I bought it in July 03 and its still running strong. Just waiting to get the funds for some good DDR500 RAM to OC it past 3Ghz.

My 1700 XP @ 2.4GHz. I bought it for 50 bucks. I know it had more room in it but I didn't have the RAM to push any highier at the time.

I'd have to go with my current Athlon XP 2600+ Barton as it is my first ever build. I built it last September. I was so happy to see this puppy fire up for the first time. I'll remember this one for a long time. 'Tis in my sig.

A friend of mine overclocked his 1800+ t-bred-B (dlt3c jiuhb) to 2423 Mhz with a system clock of 202.07Mhz *12. Mobo used= a7-n-8x delux with uber BIOS. The cpu is running on a volcano-6 with 12 case fans and is rock stable. Asus makes the best motherboards that compliment the processors when it comes to tweaking systems.

When AMD launched the athlon, it literally killed the pentium-III katmai. Actually the Pentium-III was to come with a 32Kb instruction and data cache rather than 16kb. Thats what the magazines back then said, because apart from the SSE extensions, there was no difference in the performance between a p-II and a p-III at the same clock speed.
Intel also delayed the launch of it's coppermine CPU's and it's 'camino' chipset. Thats when AMD took the lead........I swear by AMD.

Actually this thread is very interesting as I was about to post how I've actually been pretty damned satisfied and happy with my 2800+NF7-S setup. I've had it unchanged way longer than any other previous setup and don't see a need to upgrade anytime in the near immediate future.

I'd say either my Celron 333A @ 550 or my P3 550E at close to 800mhz, it's the most expensive cpu I've ever bought at around $250 delivered right around when it came out, it served me pretty well untill I got a P3 733 that only made it to 825, I think I was ram limited at that point though. Also my XP 2500+ @ 3200+ that I'm using now has been nice, it will go to 2.3 ghz if I put a faster fan on my SLK900A but I can't stand the noise a tornado makes.

i have fond memories of my 1.4ghz thunderbird athlon. the best of the best before the athlon xp came out.

 that was my first real cpu. It was top-of-the-line when I bought it. I saved and saved and saved for that system. It was a great cpu.

My other favorite cpu was in my old Compaq Professional Workstation 5000, which I picked up off Comp Geeks for $80. Pentium Pro 200mhz, heatsink cooling only. I loved that thing. Most stable box I've ever owned. I did so much modding to it - painted the case black and plus, modded the PSU with a custom silent 92mm fan, etc. Used it as a linux server for awhile. It was dual-proc capable too, but I only wanted to put dual 200s with 1mb caches in, which were usually $100 or so on ebay, and I was never willing to spend that much.

 i just got rid of my 1.4 ghz thunderbird. great chip

Has served me long and well. I loved it

I felt kinda bad for those who got their coppermines with an 'EB ' stepping, they couldn't overclock much because they ran at 133FSB . the ones with the 'E' stepping were excellent for o/cing.
