My first homebuilt was an Abit BP6 with two Celeron 433s at 504 Mhz. This setup ran RC5-64 24/7 from June 1999 through August 2002. This was before really good case cooling came along.

Probably a PIII-700. I used two of them in a personal server, retired the board, then pulled one of the 700's out of retirement to run a server for a security system 24/7. It's a perfect as I could ask for. Way more than enough power for my needs and it's not too demanding on the hardware. It pulls 18W and runs fine with generic memory and a small Antec PSU. Since it has a low current draw it also runs cool which means I don't have to deal with fan noise issues.

P4 1.6A Northwood.

Just for kicks I am going to revamp this system with an ATI 9600 and 512 MB of PC3200 for my brother. It was the easiest setup I have ever done and one of the best overclocks too.

I like my A64 but it was a nightmare to setup. I have never had to RMA a motherboard before now.

Good memories:

C300@450mhz.
C533@912mhz
C566@900mhz.
P3-700@1050mhz
P3-933@1015mhz
TB1333@1500mhz.
XP1600@1754mhz.
SPRN2200(1500mhz)@2200mhz.(700mhz OC)
XP-M2400@2400mhz.

The one that really sticks out is the 700@1050 at the time hitting one gig was great but with that horsepower it seemed to be the point where all my apps/games, etc. Just ran perfect. The P3 700@1050mhz at 150fsb with the mighty Mosel ram was just so much power at that time.

Celeron 300@504MHz on a BH-6 for sure! It died a premature death when stupid me shipped my computer as is, without taking it out from the slot

The Celeron 566@850MHz that replaced it was a close 2nd. It lasted me more than 2 years.

thermalpaste,

Interesting, I had and still have a 700Mhz Coppermine with CUBX. Most stable system I have ever owned. It's now used as my server hosting a few pages for friends and running my telnet BBS and never crashes, never and it's been up 2 years in that role! It's one of my favorite CPU's and Motherboards I have ever owned and I have owned a lot of stuff!!

I would say my Tualatin 1.4Ghz 512k Cache CPU is my other favorite though I have a lot faster now. The AMD XP2400 has been very good to me also. Never a problem and a lot of bang for the $$$ I paid.

I also have fond memories of my Celeron 366@450 on an ABit BM6. Still running great. Sold it to my friends father and they use it day and night without a problem.

Definately has to be my Athlon 1200mhz Tbird on a MSI K7T Turbo Limited Edition (KT133A). It was the first machine I had that could honestly tackle anything that was out at the time. I eventually had it running with 1GB of extremely fast PC133 and it was one fast machine I was still using it up to last week, until someone bought it from me so I could upgrade to an Athlon64.

WOW!! 1GB on a KT133A? That was unheard of back then - 768 was the highest I heard of at that time.

Good luck with the A64.

I didn't even see this post. I agree. At that time, the 700@1050 were king. Games ran great and it was so much power back then. I remember getting all giddy watching one of my comps POST at 1 Ghz for the first time ever. It was kind of magical.

I still run one of these as a Win2k staging server at home.

Other hall-of-famers for me would include:

AMD 5x86 133
Cyrix/IBM PR-100+
Barton 2500/166
