I say Half-Life 2 will be a better game and will sell more, some friends of mine.... (console gamers) they don't know jack about gaming :disgust: , say that Halo 2 will kill Half-Life 2, which is completely untrue, so here I make a poll and want your opinion.

They both will be great, however I can't truthfully comment on which is better (although I have a hunch HL2 will be a bit more 'revolutionary). Halo 2 will certainly sell more, at least until HL2 gets a console port. The fact of the matter is that console games generally outsell PC games (non-hardcore stuff like The Sims excepted).

Heh, whenever I think of a famous selling pc game it would have to be SIMS or when it first came out EVERYONE that I knew had, was StarCraft, and I remember those people also had Half-Life. Don't forget StarCraft sold over 28million copies and still counting. I cannot find a linky to a sales counter but I am sure Half-Life sold close to there if not more.

Nobody can say, but HL was better (for its time anyway) than Halo, and Half-Life 2 doesn't really look beatable.

Thats what I told my friends(morons) and they kept saying "blah blah Halo 2 pwnage HL2".. I laughed in their faces...

EDIT:

I'm not going to say Halo 2 is going to suck, I am saying that Half-Life 2 will be a GREAT if not one of or THE greatest games ever and Halo 2 will be simply be a good game. Halo 2 doesn't have nearly the great ai, graphics, or physics Half-Life 2 has.

Personally, I loved both of the originals...halflife and halo!!!
Although I dont think it's fair to compare a pc game to an xbox game. Bungie only had already outdated hardware to work with, and they still managed to make Halo2 look awesome from what I've seen.
I have Halo2 preordered and hopefully when i get paid tommorrow i can get halflife2 preordered too!!!
I think over all both look like they are gonna be months of serious gaming goodness

As far as the games are concerned, I'll hold off comment and hope that both of them are incredible. Sales wise, it is unfair to line up a console title to a PC title. For reference-

Electronic Arts has announced that The Sims, the virtual-life game created by Will Wright and Maxis, has sold more than 6.3 million copies worldwide to become the best-selling PC game of all time. The previous record was held by Myst, the graphical adventure game released by Broderbund in 1993.

Link. This was from a while ago, but just framing relative sales. HL has since passed Myst and is currently in the ~8Million copies sold range(though I can't find that release ATM).

And for general sales-

Overall, 2003 U.S. sales of console games totaled $5.8 billion (186.4 million units) while computer games accounted for $1.2 billion (52.8 million units) in sales. Total game software sales in 2002 were $6.9 billion, with console games bringing in $5.5 billion in sales and computer games accounting for $1.4 billion. (Note: The numbers released by the ESA today do not include sales of game hardware or accessories.) A record nine console games sold more than one million units, and all were rated E or T. Thirty-nine console games sold more than 500,000 units and 83 exceeded the 250,000 unit barrier. Comparable numbers for 2002 were six, 33, and 73, respectively.

Console games outsell PC games close to five to one.

To this day Super Mario Bros. 3 remains the best-selling video game of all time never bundled with console hardware, having sold 17.28 million copies.

Link.

Seven different Mario platformer titles(not including MarioKarts) outsold the second biggest PC title of all time. That's just one franchise(these numbers are somewhat tainted as there was a limited run of GBs that came with Tetris while that title for the GB sold some 33Million copies in total).

It isn't fair to compare HL2 to Halo2 in terms of sales. The only prayer HL2 has is if relatively speaking noone buys Halo2- that's not going to happen. Halo2 will obliterate HL2 in sales, but that is simply a given if you follow the markets at all.

Edit-

Don't forget StarCraft sold over 28million copies and still counting. I cannot find a linky to a sales counter but I am sure Half-Life sold close to there if not more.

Perhaps it was 2.8Million copies for StarCraft? I posted numbers above and you can check around to verify them if you like. No PC title ever has hit close to 28Million in sales, although multiple console titles have surpassed that number(if you include bundled titles anyway).

I've no doubt Halo2 will be a good success altho i havnt played the original, just going on what i've seen over the years.....
but HL2 will definitely be the better game overall, i think it might even be possible that it will sell more (assuming it doesnt get cracked and distributed bit torrent stylee like Doom3 did...lol). Only thing i think is worth mentioning tho is that HL2 has got a hard job to beat its predecessor (Half Life), ok, so the first game is old enough to be measured in its own names terms now (half life, geddit??) but its still the best game ever released, in its genre or otherwise (and now its coming out again using Source that quite frankly makes it good enough to kick out most modern game titles currently in the charts). I do believe sequels can outperform an original game quite happily, but HL2 has a helluvalot to do to create the same level of adrenellin, shock and joy that the first game did so effortlessly.
If it does....there aint gonna be a game to beat it for years if ever ;-)

Half-Life 2 by a landslide, and the only reason console games appear to be selling so much more is because of piracy. Please DON'T port Half-Life 2 over to console, remember what happened to console Counter-Strike? It was bad.

Half-Life already has a HUGE user base from six years of Half-Life mods, and the 98% rating from PC Gamer will only draw more gamers to this state of the art game.

Halo 2 better than HL2?? come on! I guess the next thing you'll be telling me is that the Red sox will beat the Yankees... oh wait... seriously though, i think HL2 will be the better game, by a wide margin too. Wether it sells more or not, that's another question. but it should be close.

i think that half-life 2 will beat halo 2 by a good margin, but halo 2 will sell more because it is a console game and there is not as much piracy on console games. but if u count the amount of users that have halo 2 and half-life 2, HL2 just might win...

Half-Life 2 by a landslide, and the only reason console games appear to be selling so much more is because of piracy.

You do realize that piracy is rampant on consoles also, right?

HL2 is much more heard of and publicised than Halo 2, my bet is on HL2

Get outside once in a while, you may be surprised Seriously, PC gaming is significantly smaller then console gaming. It is still a huge industry in its own right, but it is marginal compared to consoles. Halo2 has significantly more hype surrounding it then HL2. All of the local game shops in my area have large "Pre-Order Halo2 and come to our overnight release party" signs all over the place. I have to tell half of them what platform HL2 is coming out for so they can check the date.

i think HL2 will be the better game, by a wide margin too.

To play devil's advocate here, you do realize that Bungie was making kick @ss games when Gabe was still a slender and honest young man right? Their games are normally considered classics and respective high points in their genre upon initial release. They have proven themselves time and time again, Valve has done it once. I'm really hoping they both turn out incredible, and am honestly looking forward more to HL2 then Halo2(that would be a lot harder if they were both hitting the PC though) but I certainly won't rule out the possibility that Halo2 ends up as the overall better game.

Well it seems that half life2 will be a better game because of the storyline and halo2 will sell more 'cuz it's a console game.

Ps: console games sell more 'cuz people actually buy the game contrary what happens with pc game that most of them are copied. I hope that half life 2 has that new Codename panzers copy protection, then everybody will be in sh*** and have to buy the game.

Putting graphics aside, halo1 was a better game then half life 1. What makes you think half life 2 and halo 2 will be any different? Halo 2 has graphics and physics in very good comparison to half life 2. It is also pretty much guarenteed that halo2 will have better multiplayer if all hl2 has is counter strike, as halo1 multiplayer is far more fun then counterstrike.

That's pretty weak for a game shop. Do they know that Doom3 was released yet?. You might want to re-consider where you shop.

As far as time period, graphics was far from Halo's only advantage. There had been several innovations in the gaming industry between Half-Life and Halo that Halo took advantage of. I guess you are entitled to your opinion, but most people would disagree with you here.

The graphics in Halo 2 will not be at all comperable to those in Half-Life 2 for the simple reason that, as others have already said, the XBox is getting hella old.

As far as Halo multiplayer vs. Counter-Strike... I enjoyed, and still enjoy, Counter-Strike alot more. That and you can expect a ton of mods for HL2.

PC games were outsold by console games ~five to one. It is a reality of the marketplace. D3 I was asked the same question(which platform) although before you snicker- the XBox had more preorders for D3 then the PC version when the PC version launched(even though there is still not a firm release date for the Box).

You might want to re-consider where you shop.

EB and GameStop. EB is by far the best around here(the local EB is the best I've seen anywhere) and half of them are quite familiar with HL2(although all of them are far more hyped for Halo2), I have yet to ask anyone in GameStop that knew anything about HL2(at this point I ask for amusement's sake). There is no need to reconsider where I shop- consoles dominate the gaming industry- they have and will for some time to come at least. It should be no surprise that they would hire people who focus on console gaming to work in a store where console games makes up the vast majority of their revenue.

I dont wanna flame anybody here, but u guys should know, especially the guys who have consoles, and of course u have PCs too and probably play on them a lot too.

But my thought is that sales are so much bigger, because consoles appeal to the more casual gamer, the person who picks it up 1 nite, plays a bit then leaves it for a month then comes back and so on.

While PC games have a more hardcore community, because usually u invest a lot more into ur PC giving u the motivation to play more on it.

This also leads to gamers being a HELLUVA lot more pickier on PC than on Console, as i stated above, the casual gamer will play anything that takes his fancy as he wont read reviews or get advice and stuff. He or she will pick up and play pretty much anything. But the PC gamer will give more thought into these games and will be generally more critical about them.

Which also leads to why there have been so many games missed but have been spectacular... "cough cough" Freespace 1 and 2.... It was and still is in my books the best space sim EVER. Except for freelancer, but that was more of an rpg really. But no one really bought it, which i found really strange.

Drayvn-

The Sims and Myst are two of the top three selling PC games of all time- PC gamers are also mainly casual gamers just like their console counterparts. The real hardcore own 'em all

Edit-

Had to throw out- Freelancer rocks. Have ~150hours in to the game(played through twice- now screwing around with being a merchant instead of playing through the story but it looks like I will have to play through first anyway so I can travel to all of the systems... not quite as open as Morrowind but the best in its class at what it is hands down IMO).

Half-Life 2 will be the best sigle player game of the two.

Halo 2 will be the best COOP (something HL2 doens't have) and the best online multiplayer game of the two (counter strike source didn't innovate anything much as far as gameplay goes).

Graphically I think the Xbox can hold its own. Yeah, it won't make any of our $3 grand rigs jealous but for $150 it will beat the crap out of a lot of off the shelf PCs with midrange video cards. People need to stop thinking about the Xbox as an old PC beacuse it is not - the bus architecture and everything about it are dedicated to running games, not an os. On top of that, Bungie has spent 3 years tweaking Halo 2 to shine on a single known variable, unlike PC games and all the unknowns they have to develop around.

Anyway, I think HL2 will be GOTY but I am getting Halo2 the day it comes out as well. Online I think it will be unbeatable and offline it is still a very solid game with great ai, combat and cinematics.
