So instead of a start menu that almost reaches the top of your screen, you now have an entire screen full of apps? I am glad you think that is more organized.

It's all relative,I too prefer Metro Start for my programs, have them organised, named etc, removed ones I don't need,my old desktop UI and even Metro is now neater and yes I don't miss the old start button menu or need it,almost twenty years of having virtually same UI was more then enough,change/revamp was welcome and long overdue IMHO,roll on Win9 with improved UI and new changes .

I should've clarified that because it almost reached the top of my screen, I stopped pinning stuff to it and the programs that I use (just not as frequently) now involved menu-diving or hand leaving the mouse to reach for the keyboard. The benefit of the Start Screen is that (1) I could now pin everything that I use and (2) There's better organization, as I can break things into groups.

To each their own I guess. Start menu or not I just think the desktop gives you more organization options. I like to group icons like you and I even make folders on my desktop just for similar icons like for my video editing, DVD burning and whatnot.

And that's what I did in XP. My desktop was a scary mess, since I also have a tendency to dump documents to it. The Start Screen is basically filling the role of "desktop as a giant launch space". It's an array of application-launch shortcuts that cover the whole screen, just like the desktop. Except it's designed for this role whereas the desktop wasn't really as suitable for it, so the SS does it better. Like grouping. Or scrolling if you overflow. Or different sizes (which is really useful--I can make shortcut for the main program regular-sized, and make its helper programs tiny-sized).

I don't like Metro, and I don't like the Metro apps (except weather), and I think the default Start Screen is pretty much worthless. And I suspect that a lot of the people who hate the SS are going by that default. But if you take the time to customize it and "make it your own", I think you'll find that it's surprisingly useful. Again, this is coming from someone who, like you, hated the Start Screen at first.

Uh, why SP2? If you're gonna stick with XP (which I don't recommend--and this is coming from someone who stubbornly stuck with XP on my main laptop until last year), you should be using SP3. Not 2, and certainly not 1.

My install disks are SP1a's. I can't find sp2 on MS site.

Um, because SP2 is hopelessly outdated? As I said, you should be using SP3. You can jump straight from SP1 (or even RTM) to SP3; no need to get SP2 at all.

On the MS site, it says that you have to have sp2 installed, before you install sp3.

The trick of asking for help on the Internet is to gain knowledge and Not to acquire psychological problems that other people suffer from.

If you do not suffer from the same psychological problems that others do, get Win 8.1

It can do whatever Win 7 does and if you do not find use for the metro part ignore it.

P.S. No matter what the story is the Touch/Tile interface is the future and it is Not going away.

At the turn of the 20th century a lot of people had problems to give up horses and start using cars.

I have them all, so no need to buy any. But if I were buying, I would get 7 home premium for $99. I use Media Center daily, so If I were to use 8 or 8.1, I would need to buy pro for $140, and then spend $10 more for media center. Not worth the extra $50 to me.

I like 7 better anyways, and have had constant problems watching TV with Media center on Windows 8. I'll try 8.1 soon and see if it's any better. It better be, since it will cost me another $10, for a feature I get now for free. That's progress?

Just get a Linux distro and that would cost you nothing to watch TV,infact zero period .

And that's how I went from hating the Start Screen to realizing that it actually worked better than the Start Menu.

Fair enough. As I said, I gave it two solid months of using the start screen before deciding it just wasn't comfortable for me. Part of it is the fact that it's full-screen. If I'm watching a video in a window on my monitor, for example, I find it massively annoying to have it all disappear when I want to open another program. Even if I do the split-screen thing with a Metro app, it all still disappears when the start screen pops up.

Glad it's working well for you. As I said, it just didn't work for me, so I'm glad there are multiple ways to do the same thing.

Assuming you won't need to add in some packages via Terminal to support your tuner card (if your tuner card is supported in the first place) and assuming that X won't break if you need to install proprietary drivers and assuming that your GPU hardware has the same set of driver/hardware options for decoding/upscaling/whatever as in Windows and assuming . . . . .

Actually take my money Microsoft, at least I won't spend a few years making sure it all works, then spending another few years fixing some obscure package when an update breaks Package number #167878. Yes, Linux indeed. :whiste:

You are talking to a user(me) that uses three different Linux distros as well as Windows, infact last two Linux distros installed all possible drivers,I go as far and say Linux is improving all the time and it's pretty simple if you stick to well known distros like Mint or Ubuntu, throw in great forum support in the well known Linux distros and its far from what you make it out to be,but then some Windows users can't handle a simple Start button menu missing in Win8, oh wait Linux Mint has one of those .

I didn't say I ONLY watch TV. I have many applications that run in Windows as well.

But at least Linux is worth what you pay for it...

I've come to like windows 8. My PC starts up so much faster. I just don't care for the tiles so I use it in desktop mode.

yeah i am happy with 8.1 EXCEPT where those fuck holes stole my one note win+s shortcut to add a THIRD option to get to the windows search. totally unnecessary and aggravating.

other than that i mostly like it, i dont like some o fthe metro stuff but i have 8 on my desktop and 8.1 on my (non touch) laptop and its as good as windows 7, just a couple things are annoying to get to now and again, but it doesnt affect me much. im honestly thinking of rolling out 8.1 at work in the spring but im not sure vendor support is going to work out, so we will probably roll with 7 just so we know we can keep everything running without extra headaches

Thanks to everyone! I got a computer that I can start a web browser up on now, and it not crash three or four times.

I didn't mean to start a flame war, it's not a big deal. There are other things in life to deal with.
