It would depend on the application and where the TV was going. For low light and movies, the plasma. For a light room and console games, the LCD.

the Plasma will have better black, better overall colors, should be a bit sharper and Panasonic makes incredible screens. Only way I'd go with the samsung over the Pana would be a big price difference.

Well the Z80 is this years mid end 46" plasma model from Panasonic and the 61F is last years low-mid range model from Samsung. So I would take the Z80 over the 61 on that criterion.

However, when compared to say the Samsung 46A650 (Top end samsung, minus the networking garbage) from this year I would probably take the Samsung.

That Panny isn't out yet. Have you seen it LS21? Are you a Panasonic insider?

im justt planning out my next upgrade. want a full 1920x1080 for sake of hooking up computer to. (will also do equal mix of hdtv, high def dd, xbox).

both weigh the same. saw my cousins 4661 and it has plasma-equalling viewing angle (to my surprise). the only differences i see now is lcd has lower power consumption. however, i like that the 80u is newer gen, and, in my opinion, panasonc are generaly more "mature" (better UI)

whats setting me back is this spec line for the panasonic:

"Moving Picture Resolution 900 lines or more"

not sure what they are implying. circuitry cant handle processing/rendering of the full 1080 lines per refresh??? also, i dont know how the 24p ; 60hz; 120hz all play into this comparison between samsung and panasonic

I am pretty sure that is talking about overscan, but I did find that spec to be kind of weird. I assume there has to be a way to do a pixel for pixel mode, but generally when watching TV you leave overscan on so you dont see whatever info or garbage is in the overscan region (green lines are common among other things). I assume it simply means that their overscan mode shows 900 lines typically? Still weird.

I agree. But the price won't be close. The Samsung is likely to be phased out as it appears Samsung is likely to have only one screen above 40+ that doesn't do 120Mhz this year.

So if I have to pay for it . . . I would want the Sammy. If you are giving them away (and paying the power bill), I would take the Panny.

The "Moving Picture Resolution 900 lines or more" is referring to motion blur. Effectively, during periods of fast motion, LCDs and Plasmas lose effective detail. You can see this by loading up a 60fps game on your 360/PS3 and spinning the camera around. On a set with little to no motion blur, you will still see most/all of the detail as you spin the camera quickly. On a set with a lot of motion blur, well... things blur together. 900 lines is pretty high, as many higher end LCDs lose half or more of their detail. This is not to be confused with "ghosting" which leads to the "trail" of image behind a fast moving image.

Price seems to be about the same, $1,689.25 for the Samsung on Amazon, and $1,545.00 for the Panasonic. I would say go with the newer one.

But I still love my plasma!

That's max. Plsama varies (as opposed to LCD which is fixed) and when claibrated, on average, would be about 1/2 of that.

I'd get the new Panasonic w/o question.
