I get a really high pitched whine from my CPU constantly and it?s driving me CRAZY... I checked all the fans, it is definitely the cpu.. Why is it doing this and how can I make it STOP!

a cpu has no moving parts.... its hard for it to create noise

it is comming from the cpu no doubt. it sounds like there is a very small gap between a pin or something. It sounds like electricity passing across an open space. You know the sound a tv makes when its old and first turns on... Its like that )=

That's exactly the sound I was getting. It sounds like it came from the socket. Like I said, mine was fixed when I switched mobos. One thing I noticed was the the noise got worse with temperature monitoring programs (like MBM5 or nTune monitor). Try turning those off and see how that feels. Good luck!

If you are hearing a whine coming from an exposed pin underneath a heatsink, underneath multiple fans, underneath hard-drive whirls inside a closed case (I presume), then I would suggest a new career in law enforcement as a human bugging device. I hear thee from 10 miles away and I hear what your thinking. Either that or you are about to experience a thermal nuclear silicon meltdown and you must flee your house immediately.
Seriously, switch the cpu fan and, with the case open, listen to see if the whine disappears. Also make sure it is not the graphics card fan, the chipset fan, a case fan, the psu fan etc. I would bet dollars for doughnuts that it is the fan resting on top of the heatsink resting on top of the nonmoving cpu part. Either it needs some lubricant as suggested earlier or needs replacement all together.

LOL! It's a high pitched whine, so it is VERY distinct from the other sounds.

I was just kidding so please don't take offense LOL. (I know you're not but some people on the forum get easily upset)
I still say that distinctive sound you are hearing is the ball bearings or fan motor on one of your fans about to blow up but stranger things have occurred that dreamt of in your philosophies (whatever that quote is LOL)

No offense taken. I actually didn't mind it. I think the sound I had was from the motherboard though. It only came on with temperature monitoring, and it went away when I bought a new mobo even using the same CPU and fan.

Did the old motherboard have an active northbridge fan on it? It very well could have been the motherboard but that would be a first and unique experience for me after years of computer building and repair.
But, the universe is a strange and illogically logical place. 001 001 110 110

Nope, the VNF4 Ultras originally were passively cooled so it was silent except for the high pitched whine. It was certainly unique for me. I've been computers for longer than some people on this forum are old!

This is almost hilarious in a way, I never heard of the actual cpu making whiny noises.
