Great deal, Jokersmoker. If anyone in here wants to be serious with their radar detector the only one I can recommend is the Valentine One. It is expensive at $399, but it is the last radar detector you will buy. It is factory upgradeable and has features that no other manufacturer can even come close to. It has saved me of way over $400 in tickets so far in the three years that I've been using mine.

The time saved is worth more to me than money, and traveling faster than the posted speed limit, with the flow of traffic, easily makes "speeding" worth it.. there are several roads in town where the speed limit is 45 and 40 at night. but 95% of the time traffic is going 60-65 mph.

a 30 minute comute can be done in 20 minutes ... thats in one trip... going faster than posted while still remaining "reasonable and prudent" staying with the flow of traffic and sometimes instigating it, those minutes pile up to hours a week, more time to spend with kids before they go to bed, more time to check homework, read books, taking a long crap... who knows... driving the posted limit and holding up traffic seems more dangerous than not going with the flow.

Glancing in rearview mirror, staying up with the pack, has worked for me, although i have brought out the detector for highway trips. with a combined mileage of cars i have driven and owned i am at 650,000 miles or so and 1 ticket (interstate, late at night, no detector, only car on road) zero accidents and 1 $89 ticket (washed away by traffic school) Id say I am doin alright.

Speed isn't dangerous in of itself, it's RECKLESS DRIVING that creates the danger. Why shouldn't people be able to drive down a near-empty highway at 80 MPH when the speed limit is 55 MPH? Because it's illegal?

What is the purpose of law, anyway? I've always thought it was to protect the whole of society from the few that would indulge their desires in a way that endangers life, health, or welfare. In a sense, law in the US is supposed to recognize the freedoms of individuals, so long as indulging in your freedoms doesn't trample those of others.

Speed laws are about one thing: money. It's a way for politicians and beaurocrats to effectively raise taxes without having to actually do so, under the guise of "public safety." Here in Texas, speed limits are calculated by monitoring traffic flow, averaging speeds, and figuring 85% of that number -- guaranteeing that a percentage of drivers will be "speeding."

If the government is going to penalize us for exceeding the speed limit, using the "logic" that driving above a posted speed is dangerous, then in effect, they are saying that driving at or below that speed is safe. If that's so, then why can't citizens sue the government when traffic accidents occur at or below the posted limits, where it can be shown that had those involved been driving slower, the accident wouldn't have occured? In virtually EVERY traffic accident, driving slower would have prevented it, having given those involved more time and distance to react.

Driving at 0 MPH would prevent 100% of traffic accidents, but that would be ridiculous. I'm not saying that there is no maximum safe speed, but I'm saying that it is different for every driver, at every moment. The maximum safe speed (i.e. the highest speed at which you can control your vehicle at a given moment) depends upon dozens of factors, including (but not limited to): visibility, weather, type of vehicle, it's condition, driver mood, the current surroundings, other traffic, driving skill, blood alcohol level, use of drugs (even legal ones), enviroment inside the vehicle, etc.

I could go on, but this is already pushing on being OT. Rant mode off. Apologies in advance to the mods if you feel it's out of place; I didn't.

that sounds like a response from someone living in a major traffic congested area, like LA. i strongly agree with your convictions on driving. with as many people on the road as in LA, you really need to stay on your toes and really take an active part in driving. NOT just for yourself, but for the sake of keepin traffic moving. and all those people that will drive the posted speed limit are welcome to do so, but dont do it in anything more than the two slowest lanes. haha, no more OT talk for me. HAPPY TURKEY DAY all
