Microsoft is trying to prevent that unverified programs execute on their Whistler OS. Why? Because they can't protect thier own OS from crashing. Why don't they prevent unauthorized memory access, make their API interfaces more robust, solve their registry access problem, and so on? In my opinion, they are avoiding a problem instead of working to solve it (at least making it smaller).

They are not preventing any programs from running. If programs had to be verified, then I wouldn't have been able to run my test applications that I've written for Whistler 64.

Now drivers are a differnt story. Personally, I think it is wise for MS to not allow uncertified drivers to be installed. The majority of blue screens are caused by drivers messing up, not the OS. The major, reputable hardware companies work with MS to get their drivers tested and certified, so this shouldn't really be an issue if you're using released (non-beta) drivers for quality hardware.
