Exquisite example of conservative protecting their own no matter what:

Why now after 150+ years?

Why now has American's hatred for one another come to this point to deface our own history? To literally attack the post-war reunion of the States by dishonoring those we previously chose to live with and forgive? You treat all Southerners the same, all are guilty of terrorist acts, all are white supremacists? So fuck them all, is that it?

Clearly that is why such a thing would motivate anyone to escalate their hatred for the South. For its symbols, for its history. Because for some reason it has been decided that it can no longer be tolerated 150+ years after. I guess you know better than those who fought the Civil War, and their resolution to it wasn't good enough. That America shouldn't have healed the way it did afterwards so you'll take that reunification and do what you can to erase it.

General Robert E. Lee was an American. Lee wrote to a former Confederate soldier: “This war, being at an end, the Southern States having laid down their arms, and the questions at issue between them and the Northern States having been decided, I believe it to be the duty of everyone to unite in the restoration of the country and the reestablishment of peace and harmony.”

Just 42 years ago this is how Americans reflected on Lee:

President Ford said: “As a soldier, Gen. Lee left his mark on military strategy. As a man, he stood as the symbol of valor and of duty. As an educator, he appealed to reason and learning to achieve understanding and to build a stronger nation. The course he chose after the war became a symbol to all those who had marched with him in the bitter years towards Appomattox.”

Some additional reading. House restores citizenship to Robert E. Lee, July 22, 1975. The 407-10 vote came after a campaign spearheaded by Sen. Harry F. Byrd Jr. (D-Va.). President Gerald R. Ford's Remarks Upon Signing

Congress was united in honoring our country by honoring its past. By honoring an American General for his service and his character.
Today Americans are apparently more concerned with escalating aggression against one another. This behavior sickens me.

Too afraid to go into the city? Oh, and STFU about calling someone a bigot, it's a childish way to argue. I've donated more money to inner city kids than I bet you ever have.

You keep saying that yet here are you protecting the klan, and ranting about black on black crime. Gee I wonder if people like that are known to lie for their cause.

Agreed. Although I don't think the aim is straightforward revising of history as much as whitewashing it to remove the stigma attached to the South's position. I think morally and effectively that would be even worse than simply removing all evidence that the Civil War even occurred. We have a much greater chance of repeating evil if we remove the stigma than if we simply forget we have done it before.

That's why many propose replacing the statues with key figures in the abolitionist movement & such. You can imagine how well that went down with the "remembering history" state-rights advocates.

I gotta say.... all of this terrorism and white nationalist nonsense, because the people in Charlottesville (and not all of these out-of-state dipshits) want to move an unsightly statue from public property into a museum?

Sure.... this definitely makes the alt-right and Neo-Nazi sympathizers look like a bunch of reasonable folk! /MASSIVE FUCKING S

Naw dude, get your pseudoscience straight, it's womenfolk who are neurotic.

Sadly however, free speech is no longer tolerated. And to be honest, the hatred for free speech started in Europe.

We are letting European style censorship overtake America and that should be stopped asap.

To be honest? Honest? Hatred for free speech started in Europe? Are you high?

Lee also felt very strongly against the very types of monuments at question today. He wrote about such a monument:

I could not add anything material to the information existing on the subject. I think it wiser, moreover, not to keep open the sores of war, but to follow the example of those nations who endeavored to obliterate the marks of civil strife, and to commit to oblivion the feelings it engendered.

Just in case there's any doubt in my personal stance about the terrorist that used a car to murder someone. They should be tried for murder, if convicted they should have a speedy appeal and if the conviction is upheld they should be executed. It should all happen in less than a year as per the 6th Amendment speedy trial clause.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speedy_Trial_Clause

It's plain and simple.

Those statues are so few and far between. Are there more than a handful left anymore? Yet the typical reactionary response is to take them down, which is ignorant. History should be preserved. When we were a more dignified country and civil discourse occurred CIVILLY (not with all the drama of crybabies as it does these days), statues like this were much more prevalent. The Stars and Bars of the Confederacy were even in some state flags. People could express respect for for any opinion even if they disagreed.

Sadly however, free speech is no longer tolerated. And to be honest, the hatred for free speech started in Europe.

Felix maybe you could shed some light on why you feel such a strong connection to the confederacy? Help us understand your position better.

Why not move all the memorials/monuments to the battlefields? Most of the battlefields have been turned to historic areas or national parks and are basically outdoor museums. Move that stuff there. Then it's not at capital buildings, or courthouses, or town squares etc etc.

None of them glorify the Nazis the way confederate memorials glorify the defenders of slavery & Jim Crow.

Hey, since you're here, care to comment on why the president went well of out his way to protect said sons of the confederacy? A term you might find useful in that endeavor: nothingburger.

Off topic. But does anyone else find it disconcerting to agee with someone's positions in a technical forum? Find their posts reasoned and well thought out.

Then come to P&N and find out they are flaming racist or misogynist.

Thank you Paratus - first for asking that question civilly and then for making me laugh. I don't feel a strong connection to the Confederacy, but I have lived my entire life in the South. I have seen these arguments to remove statues of historical context come and go over the decades, and in the end I continue to recognize my love for history.

I did not major in history, but it has always been my favorite subject. Back in the early 1990's I read nearly every book at the local library about various topics from the histories of various countries and of religions, including certain conflicts like WW2 and the Civil War. I knew a guy who sold books for a living around the year 2002, and he said that that people bought more books on those two subjects than any other.

What else could be more interesting than history? If something offends you, you are free to be offended. Then you are free to go about your business like everyone else has managed to do long before you got here.

Sons of the confederacy do love them some book learning.

Or any number of mainstream conservatives looking out for their own.

I find there are some interesting correlations between being a big fan of intel and also being a supporter of white nationalists and a GOP shill. Might have something to do with their corporate culture and ethics issues. Nvidia has some of these too, and I would say they have more support from the white nationalist crowd than AMD... but truly it is Intel support that best predicts a certain poster will hold bigoted views.

Just because they know about computers doesn't imply they won't understand how politics works.

I need a good picture of all the confederate/nazi flags from yesterday. It'll be useful when the old "get over it, you lost" argument comes up again in regards to the election and the orange shit-gibbon's mandate.

If this was about remembering history then no one would be marching.

Instead you have people who's identies and feelings of self-worth are tied up in their skin color. They were already agitated by 8 years of an Obama presidency. So now they are lashing out. Encouraged, in fact by certain political enablers. Since they are single issue voters they'll easily give up their votes for those who appear to support their issue.
