The Alt Right cheerleaders want to argue this issue of "hate" is symmetric.
I hate a lot of things and a lot of people. I don't organize a group indoctrinated to bask in their own hate.
Some folks I know actually suspect that Trump is the Anti-Christ. Suspicions are based on the address for the building and property owned by Kushner Properties -- 666 Fifth Avenue. We suspect Trump of irreverent hypocrisy when he spoke of having his "little wine and his little wafer" during his supposed church attendance, and we snicker at his remark that he's "well churched." But mainly, some suspect this because Trump is a master of excessive and absurd lies.
Do we hate Satan and his minions?
Did we hate Communism or individual communists?
How do we really feel about Trump? We'd rather use something other than the "H" word: We DESPISE him. The word despise is cited as a synonym for "hate," but it has a meaning with a subtle difference: it signifies contempt and derision. So we despise Trump for his personality disorder and the values he promotes -- values that often seem fundamentally un-American, unhealthy or undesirable.
What reasons legitimize the feeling of despising someone? Race? Religion? Those are illegitimate reasons. If I despise Trump for his insincerity, his duplicity, his low character -- it is an emotion directed at one person -- not a group of persons. If I despise the Alt Right as a group, it is because the fundamental basis of their organization is not legitimate. It is not American. In general, it is not humanly acceptable.
Lefties don't organize themselves around a principle of hatred. Some extreme leftist groups have been violent, like the Weathermen. Some would cite the Black Panthers of the 1960s. But the organizing principle of "Black Lives Matter" is not one of hating so-called white people.
Am I splitting hairs? Probably. But there is no symmetry in this, as suggested by the so-called President's initial statement after the Charlottesville violence.
If you have an Enemy, do you hate "it" as opposed to hating individuals organized behind it? Do you despise the Enemy?
The Alt Right has been using this logic to undermine the press and no less groups supporting causes the Right wishes would just go away. They've taken advantage Tolerance and the Law in order to undermine Tolerance and the Law.
When the Blue armies of the North defeated the Gray armies of the South, do you think they had a kum-bayh-yah moment with fist-bumps and hugs?
