I dont see this affecting me one way or another. I dont approve of the gay lifestyle, but people are pretty much free to do what they want.

It seems like there would be more white gay people. Maybe this has something to do whith the kind of people we send to prison. i.e. people in an all male prison may turn to being gay. Or maybe it is because there are a lot of poor black people who live in large metropolitan areas. Who knows?

I'm the last one to hide behind subtle implications..

I posted this topic mostly because as a lover of irony, I found it amusing. African Americans are by far, the most homophobic ethnic group in the U.S, yet they also have the highest rate of LBGT.

But if you want to know how this data should affect public/social policy towards homosexuals, this is what I think.

Gay marriage should be legalized. The mountain of evidence suggesting homosexuality is endogenous is too great, and punishing someone for a "condition" they were born with is surely in very bad taste..

Significant research funds should be set aside to study the cause of homosexuality. It's obviously partially genetic, but not necessarily hard coded. It could be that due to lifestyle and environment, the chances of a fetus becoming gay, bisexual or transgender is significantly increased.

Epigenetics supports the notion of environment and lifestyle influencing gene expression, so it's not exactly far fetched..

Also, some of you may balk at the idea of Vitamin D being the culprit, but that's probably because you're ignorant when it comes to Vitamin D. Vitamin D helps regulate the expression of over 3,000 genes, so it's very important to the functioning of the human body, and vital to the development of fetuses.

If minorities have a higher rate of homosexuality as the study suggests, then there must be a cause as to why that is. The most logical cause to me is low levels of vitamin d, as many minorities are darker skinned and thus do not make vitamin d as efficiently as someone that is light skinned.

Also, many ethnicities purposely avoid the sun for fear of becoming darker, which compounds the problem.

That's probably because there are way more white people than black people, so you're more likely to encounter a gay white person than a gay black person. Anecdotal experience is a horrible way to do statistics.

A few things.. This study, among many others, goes to show that the 10% figure the gay community has been touting for years was highly exaggerated. I only see ignorant people claiming 10% are gay these days, so I suppose it's finally starting to sink in.

Secondly, I have a sneaking suspicion that the higher rate for minorities could have something to do with Vitamin D production. Vitamin D deficiency is extremely high among African Americans (as well as many other dark skinned people living in North America), and has been found to be extremely important for developing fetuses. It's also been linked to all sorts of birth defects; particularly of the brain.. It's possible that a greater risk of the fetus becoming gay or bisexual could be one of the side effects of Vitamin D deficiency in the mother.

Thirdly, the inflated level of young women between the ages of 18-29 identifying as LGBT can be explained by popular culture I'm certain. Every other study I've seen claims higher rates of homosexuality in men than in women to the tune of 3:1.

Also, the notion that gays are better educated and wealthier than their straight counterparts appears to be untrue..

Given that surveys can be manipulated by the surveyor/surveyee, I don't put much stock in this one or in other surveys in which I've participated. That being said:

1) I've only heard the 10% figure from groups/individuals who are anti-gay. anti-SSM, or shit disturbers. I'm not saying that you are a member of any of those groups.

2)Vitamin D deficiency affects those people you listed and also covers anyone who doesn't get enough sun. Vitamin D can be supplanted with pills but getting it via "suntime" is most likely better in the long run.

3) Possibly; we'll keep an eye on any developments . If it holds that percentage for years/decades, it might be more than culture or fad.

4) I would say it's in the same range as other groups surveyed.

From my experience, it's usually the pro gay people that use the 10% figure, as it makes the gay community seem much larger and thus more important than it really is.

Few people work outdoors or spend enough time in the Sun to achieve optimal Vitamin D levels.. And the majority of Americans are invariably ignorant when it comes to their health, so unless their doctor tells them to, they will never think to take extra Vitamin D in supplement form.

Personally, I take 5,000 iu per day.

Unless the porn craze ends, I don't see the girl on girl fixation many heterosexual men have ending any time soon.. It was porn that started it in the first place years ago.

(1) So lesbianism has a different cause then. Fair enough.

(2) Its not soy, but the feminine hormones at fault. Are you suggesting that brain changes cannot occur to the child after its born. Especially at a very young age when drinking formula?

(3) It causes an increase. It is not the sole cause. There could very well be other things that cause an excessive amount of female hormones to be in a man.

The part I found the funniest was when they came out with BPA-free bottles because they were worried about estrogen-like horomones leaching out of the plastic into the formula
