Sadly, in the world we live in right now where lawsuits can fly around on a dime, adults are not able to touch children even if it is to stop a fight. Parents and their sleezy legal team can easily twist anything they want.

I would imagine this varies state to state. As with LEO's, I'm sure there's restraint DO's and DON'Ts, and training would be required. Yet, that doesn't change what I said. The bus monitor is on the bus to keep the students in check so as not to distract the driver. And of course, video evidence from the bus would assist in reducing fallout from false accusations or statements. There's a number of tangents we could discuss regarding this stuff, but I'll just leave it at that.

I once considered becoming a NY school bus driver but having to deal with extremes of weather killed that. What I learned is that the driver and assistant and district are ultimately responsible for what is permitted on a bus and it doesn't matter if it's a trip halfway across the US.

Heads should roll on this one and the children do a few years of community service in minority neighborhoods including summer vacation until they graduate from high school or would have if they drop out.

Just a quick update, the other incident referenced here (12 year old girl claiming her dreadlocks were cut) has now admitted that she made the whole thing up.

I think you are exaggerating. Yes, technically a lawsuit can be filed over anything. But if you use reasonable force to restrain one child from hurting another, or to break up a fight, you will be fine. No court is going to entertain a lawsuit unless you did something stupid and hurt the child unnecessarily.

Laying hands on a child is never your first option, but if necessary it is every school employees duty to do so to stop students from getting hurt if you are able to do so. Calling a member of administration, security or 911 is the next step if you need help and to report and deal with the students once you've got the fight broken up.

Any adult who would stand by and watch children fight for fear of a lawsuit is not really an adult. We're talking about 10-year-olds here.
