Neighbor and family disputes are among the most unpredicatble and potentially violent calls a PO can respond to. Whether or not they escalate upon arrival of a PO when they might not have otherwise is a question that can't really be answered.

One of our local deputies died that way within a couple of minutes of arrival when he thought he could talk the guy down alone (without waiting for backup) because he knew the guy.

What is it that you are advocating?

the defense is now setting up the story that the policeman thought the truck was stolen and yelled for them to stop and shot when he thought the victim “reached for
something” and that the truck lurched back.

I feel bad for the kid as he was trying to fix his truck at 3am so he could drive it to his construction job at 6am!

Yes, I see now that he never actually had the antifreeze in his hand, but instead was reaching for it in the bed of the truck when he was shot. Right away I see something odd about the cop's version. He claims that because "the car rattled and had smoke pouring from it" that he assumed it "had been stolen and damaged in the process." Wait, what? So a car malfunctioning on the road, which happens like literally all the time, is evidence of theft?

The reason this is important is that the officer will claim he suspected car theft and hence the danger was heightened because the driver could have shot him to avoid arrest for stealing the car. Yet he had no reason to believe the car was stolen. His reason was shite.

I mean why don't we just pass a law that says in a shooting the officer has to be right that there was danger or he goes to jail. Not think he was right but actually be right.

I’d rather disarm the police. If you don’t have a gun you will be more likely to not put yourself in harms way, get back up when needed, and/or deescalate the situation.

Aren’t sheriffs trained worse than police?

Unfortunately the training is irrelevant if they are consistently protected from the consequences of their actions. I guarantee one of 2 things would happen if they were held accountable the way we are:

(1) They would get their shit together
(2) They wouldn't get their shit together but would get fired/jailed for their shit. They would be replaced by someone who could do thing (1)

I've always been a fan of the idea that everyone gets one shoot. You can still be charged if you're wrong and it's manslaughter or whatever, but even if you're right, one and done. Probably don't need to continue being a cop after killing someone anyhow.

I won't use absolutes since there are always exceptions, but in general .....

Sheriffs are elected and are basically administrators. Some wear uniforms, others wear suit and tie. Some do road patrol, most do not. Often they are also the administrators of the county jail. In some states there are NO qualifications or training requirements to run for office or be elected. There are usually some requirements for training afterwards as to how to run/administer the office.

Sheriff's Deputies are the ones who do road patrol and in general, they are required to have the same edcuation and training as any other state or municipal officer.

Even if the cop didn't turn on his body camera, doesn't' the cruiser have a dashcam?

Unusual for CNN to cover a white person being shot by police, but evidently Ben Crump and Al Sharpton have taken up the case. They hope championing the case of a white kid shot will increase willingness of people to support police reform.

The incident is strange.

According to the one witness, he and his friend had been trying to fix the transmission on the victim's car, and had just left the repair shop when they got pulled over by an Arkansas sheriff's deputy. The victim-driver gets out of the car carrying a jug of anti-freeze. Evidently the car would still not shift into park, and he didn't want the car to roll backwards and hit the cop car. So he meant to place the anti-freeze container behind the rear wheel to stop the car from rolling. According to the friend who was still sitting in the passenger seat, he all the sudden heard shots fired without hearing any prior conversation. The cop had shot and killed him.

Cop was fired days later for failing to turn on his body camera until after he shot the teen. Police are still investigating. We don't know the officer's side of the story.

Something is obviously strange in this one. I feel like there must be more to the story.

CNN always covers shootings you colossal bigot and monument of superhuman ignorance.

Really now? CNN always covers police shootings? You mean like all 1000 of them which occur every year? So that would be, what, about three per day?

You may want to re-think that before making an even bigger ass of yourself than you just did.

I used to think this was insane 35 yrs ago, when I first heard that bobbies don't carry firearms. Now, I'm thinking it might work. What we have is obviously not working.

Of course our gun culture will preclude this from happening.

I was in South Korea for work a few years ago, in Busan which is more of an industrial city than tourist city. I asked a coworker in our local office if there was any part of city I should avoid for safety. He gave me an odd look and said "No. Everywhere here is safe. And our police don't carry guns, so you don't have to worry about them shooting you like in the US either."

This is a bad idea unless we confiscate guns from the general populace first. In the UK, some of their police are unarmed, but they aren't facing criminals who are routinely carrying firearms. We've created the need for armed police by allowing so many guns to get into the hands of our citizenry. If we disarm police now, they're going to be bringing tasers and batons to a gun fight.

Interesting.
Not knowing all the info the Jury was presented, I'll assume it was a good call on their part.

Still a tragedy that this country is so heavily armed, that police feel the need to shoot first and ask questions later. But when they can be killed in the blink on an eye, paranoia must abound. Every human becomes a nail, and their trigger finger a hammer. This case, like all the others, is part of our Great American Tragedy. A pox, on all our houses.

Glad to see police being held accountable for their actions. I can only hope that guilty verdicts will eventually give pause to future trigger happy cops.

Just a pox on those who vote to not change it.
