Yup, did the same after seeing leaked 1060 benches. Even if it can't flash to 8GB the 4GB 480 at $170 looks like the best value for the buck. Mine was a preorder that won't ship til the 18th.
I don't suppose they redid the PCB to actually keep only 4gb on the refernece models. Most likely getting rid of all the stock until aib models come out.

Looks like the visa30 coupon for paying with the Amazon visa is expired.

Was ready to check out with the 4gb sapphire card and when I entered the code it did not go through saying it expired. Boo, looks like I'll be waiting for AIB.

I'm going to rant a little bit so that I can get this off my chest.

If I'm rich, I won't even be on this forum asking what is the best performance per dollar card right now. I will just grab the GTX 1080 and pair it with custom water blocks, and call it a day.

The fact that I'm collecting food stamps in California really forced me to be price conscious. And I gotta say I'm so tempted to pick up that GTX 1070 right now...my 6950 is dying.

I'm wishing the 1070 isn't priced at $419.99, I would have pick it up if it's $379 after tax, you see this gets nowhere when you are broke and you outta be realistic about your needs than wants.

Your CPU is a bottleneck already for R9 390/980 level card. You can just see all the digital foundry reviews of Skylake vs. 2500K stock. Given how long you kept your 6950 and your financial situation, I would honestly wait for a $200 480 4GB or even the $150 RX470 that is supposed to launch in August. There is no way you should be buying a 1070.

As far as your 6950 goes, it probably just needs a TIM replacement and dust removal. If you have lifetime warranty and the card is truly failing/artifacting, maybe they'll send you an R7 370. A card's fan running high is not always an indication the card itself is failing. But due to XFX'a warranty, you likely cannot remove the cooler to replace the TIM and clean it. You can use compressed air or a vacuum cleaner/q-tips.

The 6950 has officially died on me. Well, XFX says they can mail me a replacement fan free of charge or I can buy it online if they don't have it in stock.

XFX says I can reapply the thermal paste/heat sink myself and not voiding my warranty even though I will have to remove the sticker. (They added this only applies in North America).

I'm guessing the prices for custom 480 will be inflated and I don't see them having in store until late July. I asked Newegg xfx support about custom 480, and he replies he doesn't know but soon.

Now I'm cardless until I can pick up a 480 somewhere. I truly hope prices won't be inflated by then. I don't see them selling the 4gb model for $199...

It sucks when you are broke.:'(

If money is in that short supply, either wait for the 460/470/1050 cards, or pick up a gtx 950 on close-out. 950 should be available slightly over a hundred bucks, and should allow 1080p at med or higher.

The 470 or 460 would be a less expensive option and give you better performance at 1080p than your 6950. They should be around $150 range. Not sure when they will be out but supply for those I'm sure will be fine and you most likely be fine with a reference model.

It's pretty normal for noise levels. I think people were just complaining because they are used to super quiet rigs.

My Sapphire 8GB finally was delivered today! Ordered on day one from NewEgg pfft.

Anyway with the new drivers and Vulcan support for Doom, (plus getting a few bucks back from NewEgg for the wait) I'm still pretty excited to try out the 480 in my 4790K / 1440P rig. I'll report back my thoughts after a few days of testing.

Oh and if you like fast paced traditional shooters pick up Toxikk, it's awesome.

AIb models will be out in another week. Granted they will be around $250 or more but also better performance and quality.

but... but... its AMD and it cant be as good as nvidia... this cant beeee!

I don't care about which brands as my 6950 went dead on me this morning. I was 19 and didn't know anything about GPU and I picked up my first GPU - 6950 solely because it comes with lifetime warranty.

I gotta tell you, now I'm running cardless, and AMD this year has been nothing but disappointment! I really wanted to support the underdog even though I don't upgrade often as you can tell, but I can't even get my hands on a reference RX 480, let alone the custom ones.

I'm done guys, I am done, waiting game is over, I apologize that my patience is running out and I have to thank all of you whom have helped me out to pick the best budget friendly card since I'm on food stamp, and I have thank that one guy didn't go too hard on me for buying stupid expensive gpu when I can just use that money for food and rent.

I have sign-up auto notify for that cheapest 1070 EVGA offers now since I hear they provided the best customer service for team green. And I'm also waiting for the custom 480.

So either the custom 480 or the cheapest 1070 from EVGA whichever comes sooner I will pick it up. It's going to be fun to know which camp going to get the poor man's monie lmao. I understand that 1 GPU sales will not make any impacts on either side, but I thought AMD wanted to gain some market share, too bad you leave me no choice.

I had 2 480 Sapphire's in my cart today at Amazon but did not buy them since the $30 off for using an Amazon credit card coupon expired I did not order them since I will be now getting a custom 480 since I've waited this long.

You can simply use now in stock to notify you of any 480's. The 4gb sapphire is the only 4gb that keeps coming in stock at Amazon.

I don't see how spending $200 more on a 1070 helps you here. Im not one to judge but that doesn't make sense. If I was strapped for cash the 1070 would be the last thing I'd look at.

The cheapest 1070 is $399 and it's been out of stock since it was released. It will eventually come in again at newegg but I bet the custom 480's will be out by then. I'm sure you will be able to save some cash and get one if you use now in stock frequently.

Are you at least sending the 6950 in for RMA? I sincerely doubt they will have any refurbished 6950's to send you in replacement. I'm sure they will bump you up to a 200 or 300 series card. Why don't you wait to see what card you're going to get before you decide to take a $250-$400 leap?

You might be well-served by whatever replacement you get.

Edit: Or you can do what I would do and sell it on CL to help pay for that 1070

I saw some artifacts before the 6950 collapsed on me today, so I'm guessing there might be some overheating/melting going on for the internal components.
XFX says they will send me a replacement fan free of charge, but not sure if they have my model in-stock.

Plus, even I do reapply thermal paste and new fan, I'm not sure it will still run. Sounds like XFX isn't willing to warrant me a comparable card, but I didn't ask.

Maybe I should do that before I go reckless and drop $450 on 1070.

That's being said, I have not try to run league on i5-2500...so maybe it can run that.

I mostly play flame in the flood, XCOM 1 & 2, Hard West, and Banner Saga, all these game aren't very demanding except XCOM.

But I don't think I can run those games on i5 2500.

Why can't they just get the custom 480 out already? I even asked them when will they have the custom ones so that I can mark my calendar.

Or I should push XFX and see if they really stands behind the lifetime warranty claim.

I will be now getting a custom 480 since I've waited this long.

Sounds like you know something that I don't. So when you think the custom ones will be out?

I don't think you'll have to push them, but they have a protocol they have to follow before they are supposed to have you submit it for RMA. If you can fix the cooling yourself, even temporarily to get evidence it has issues unrelated to the fan failure, you can probably expedite the process.

Or just take a video of the problems and upload to youtube. If you're getting artifacting at boot/BIOS screen and/or at 2D clockspeeds on your desktop that's probably the card, and sending a good description of the issue with link to the youtube video should get you an RMA pretty darn quick. XFX has great support in North America. I've been pleased the few times I've had to use their RMA. If your 6950 is actually toast chances are pretty good they'll upgrade you to a better/newer card.

Got my 4gig RX 480 today. OC'd the memory to 8gig speeds, but haven't flashed it yet. Will cross my fingers and do that tomorrow, time to game after being trapped on integrated graphics since April. Core clocks mostly stay at 1244, ~1214 on compatibility mode. Temps are 74-78. The cooler's louder than my R9 390 Nitro, but the Nitro had like two pounds of heatsinks and three fans, so that's to be expected.

Or I should push XFX and see if they really stands behind the lifetime warranty claim.

Really, go through them first before you drop money on something. Best case scenario, you get a 200 or 300 series card, worst case, you get another 6950 to use until you find something and can sell it later.

EDIT: Got impatient and flashed it, all's well.

Sounds like you know something that I don't. So when you think the custom ones will be out?
Custom 480's will be out starting the 22nd since that's when the 480 sapphire nitro will be available according to OC UK. The overclockers UK store has them up for pre order now.

There is also the powercolor devil 480 which will most likely be released around that time frame.

Most articles I've seen here in the thread regarding the custom cards say by the end of this month. So you only have to wait one more week.

I would do as others suggested and try to get a video of your card with artifacts and send it to xfx. I would have just told them this in the first place before mentioning the fans and see what they would have said.

Since they have lifetime warranty they must honor it. You just have to ask for some sort of replacement. Since they said you can open it and re apply thermal paste, do so and then let them know you followed the troubleshooting steps.

Rather than having them send you fans, ask if there is any way you can get a comparable card. It should do you fine for the games you play.

Is this firemark score normal, I obviously use older processor and there will be some bottleneck, but this system is good for 2 more years probably.
The test was run without touching any options, default.
