I have been trying to get these cards as they work well for mining.

I have spent many hours working at it.

I mine I almost never game. Too old reflexes are not there.

They are hard to get at the correct prices.

Very hard. I was quick on the draw and grabbed a few, had a friend on the line who is also mining and he grabbed two and that was it, out of stock again. I'm curious how many are actually selling. Are they really just that popular or is supply just terrible? I suspect a bit of both.

Or are miners just gobbling up every unit they can get their hands on. :hmm:

Well as a 95% miner 5% gamer. A smaller miner with a 6 card rig is not the problem.

Its a guy that has 60 cards.

I am mostly on bitcointalk. we had one guy with 48 cards and another with 20 cards.

They resold at say 285 vs 249 making 36 a card.

They kept a few to mine. So they basically they have a free mining rig.

and they cost many people 30 to 50 bucks a card.

I saw a lot of cards on ebay and amazon marked up and selling pretty well.

I did purchase 1 card from ebay as I had an 8% coupon card was sold to me for 285 so -8% and it is 262.20

that is a very small markup and since if I buy from newegg or amazon the cards would be about 256 after tax.

Snagged 6 Sapphire 480's tonight at NewEgg.ca. looks like supply is starting to come in more quickly which is great. I just need 12 more and I'll max out my power consumption forcing a hard stop.

Do it. Yolo, I'm about to go reckless mode too except that I can't.
OOS within 5 min. If I see it again I'll just snatch it. Looks like the 1060 has much better supply vs demand than 480. Not going to overpay for the 480 or wait unknowingly for stock and price to settle.

I feel like they did.

I mean, we know there are way more 8GB models than 4GB ones even though 4GB ones are a better buy for miners. We have seen retail supply and supply on the major online retailers.

I just don't know what else AMD could do other than delaying the launch until stockpiles were even higher than they were.

If they simply can't manufacture them fast enough, that's a different story than the 290/X. The 290/X they simply underestimated demand. Then they upped the supply, but by the time it kicked in (takes ~3 months from the time you place the orders. Sometimes longer if certain components are in short supply.) the mining bubble burst and they had all these cards they'd ordered.

I believe this is the most likely reason the 390/X launched as late as it did. They could have launched it when the 980/70 launched instead of continuing to sell 290's with the old benchmarks for the reference cards as a comparison to Maxwell.

So because one retailer in the UK posts their numbers it's now taken as fact for the world.

This is ridiculous just because gibbo posted his numbers doesn't mean anything about the total world wide availability of 1060s vs 480s....

Not to mention the 480 is so abundant why can't regular people get them over Miners and why has aib skus taken longer than Nvidia's later launched 1060p

As far as AIB models. The launch situation for the 2 cards was completely different. AMD was launching first and didn't want leaks to tip their hand to nVidia. One way to do that is keep cards out of everyone's hands until the last possible moment.

You need to send cards/GPU's to the AIB's for them to design and certify cards ahead of launch. If the AIB's were to release cards along side the reference models they would have needed samples much earlier. More samples in the wild mean more leaks.

nVidia, on the other hand, were launching after AMD. They could get samples to the AIB's relatively earlier because AMD would already be finalized on their design. Even then we had AMD late tuning clocks before launch. Evidence of higher power usage and the PCI-e power situation leads to the conclusion that there were 11th hour changes that upped the power draw and they didn't have a chance to fine tune everything.

I have a friend still using his GTX 460, but he rarely plays PC games or any games in general now. When did you pre-order yours on Amazon?

I guess if I haven't found this forum I would have jumped ship already. I imagine many gamers already jumped ship because they can't pick up any rx 480.

Well, as long as we have competition in the GPU market and hope AMD stays out of financial trouble to keep them from bankrupt, I honestly don't care which side gets my money.

They won't go bankrupt as long as MSFT and Sony needs them to supply console chips.

I'd love to see the sales numbers on the 480s. They spent months building up stock and they still can't make them fast enough. Looks like a massive success for AMD here.

I'd like to know how many cards stores have when they do get them in stock.

Just tonight Newegg got cards from powercolor, XFX, and sapphire. All sold out in minutes.

What did they get? 10? 50? 100?

Probably more than 100. You gotta realize there are more people not just on this board who are buying 6+ at a time.

I was so close to having a 1070 for $399 and newegg cancelled my order since it was not in stock.

And my monitor got delayed until next week. I hope I can find another coupon code for newegg to order a card soon.

As would I. They're entire half year built-up stock was bought up in hours and then backordered massively.

Only other comparison I can think of is a new Apple iPhone.

The 480 is easily the most in demand card right now (just look how fast it sells out). I would be shocked if the 1060/1070 comes anywhere close in sales unless Nvidia gets crypto mining working optimally on them. I've said this before but it's worth restating:

The number of individual miners compared to the number of actual PC gamers is very small. However when those individual miners are buying between 6 - 60 cards each, who's actually buying more cards?

Edit:

Here's some Google trend data that may be of interest.

I think it was Monday, the first day it was posted here that Amazon was pre ordering them.

I probably would have held out for the big amd chip as I want a good card for 1440p and vr but when one of my 460's died it pushed my hand. So I got a 480 as a stopgap and will reevaluate next year and upgrade gpu again then, and likely cpu as well.

That data look weird. I changed it to the more common names for the video cards (RX 480/GTX 1060/GTX 1070/GTX 1080) and then changed from "Computer Components" to "All Categories"

Chart looks much different, and even accounts for the spike for GTX 1060 launch which the other data set didn't.

That MSI card actually lasted in stock for like 1.5hrs

The miners are getting their rigs filled.

I am almost there.
I have 1 from frys coming today.
I have one from newegg coming sat. that will fill my last empty slot.

I will then have to decide to stick with what I have or offload the three r9 390's and get 3 more rx 480's.

less hash less power if I swap.

and gamers need 1 or 2 at most.
