I have set up mostly VIA systems over the last several years. When I first started using VIA, they had a few issues. All of them have been addressed to my satisfaction and every system I have built with them is still running and (knock on wood) never had a bad VIA mobo yet. (I have pretty much stuck with ASUS for customers so I was confident they were going to be stable.) I have an ABIT and my only real complaint is that it doesn't allow my FSB to go over 139.

I never had a problem with Via chipset boards. I was even using the despised Abit VA6 board for a while without any problems.

hey neutralizer sup?

Anyway, my board is an MSI K7T Turbo-Lite working flawlessly. It's like the revered K7T Pro, which was known for some really good stability. It's lite in that it's not as wide, and it has one less PCI slot. (kinda like the 8KHA+ vs the 8KHAL).

This board works nicely

I have an ASUS board too. hmmm maybe it is an XP problem then. I don't know. I've tried so many things that effect so many aspects of my system that it is hard to figure out the real culprit.

I'm on a ECS K7VMA (VIA KM133) board now and other than a few small quirks, it runs great and really, it was hassle free, and I would note that this was my first DIY PC.

Got an Epox 8Kha+ mobo under heavy use for few weeks now, not a single problem.
I used to be Intel fan but... no more!

My Via system is working very nicely, using an Epox 8KHA+. Only DDR mobo I've had much luck with apart from the original Soyo Dragon.

Not sure about my Epox 7kxa, but my ASUS A7V133 and Epox 8KHA+ are really good. No complaints here.....

Mine has been working all the way.

I'm not sure why everybody would blame it on the VIA chipset when their PC crash or not work right. I've got this friend of mine, his bro is a retard, he blames everything on VIA. Not sure what he said but I was having my time laughing behind him when he says that VIA sucks and that's the root of all problems. He's saying that his P3 1ghz with 1Gb RAM smoke my Tbird too. Retard.....

WHere's Pabster??

My rig is as stable as they come. I build a ton of via systems for customers and a high percentage never have problems. Most problems are software related anyhow. I built a P4 1.6 (478) SDRAM i845 system the other day and I had to load just as many "patches" as I do on via systems.

I have an Epox 8KTA3 with Via KT133A chipset. nothing on the board has failed, nor have I experienced any chipset related difficulty because I have an Aureal Vortex 2 soundcard rather than an SBLive

Ive just recently built a rig based on the Gigabyte GA7VTXH - Very impressed, even restored my faith in Via
Is it just me or do these KT266A Gigabyte mobo's boot faster than other brands? Got a bit of a shock first time i booted as i missed going into the bios it was that quick.

must...resist...temptation...

I'll only comment on my personal experiences with VIA-chipset based boards. General stability wasn't a problem, but the annoying "little" things -- and a few major ones -- steered me clear in a hurry. The last straw was when I had to totally (practically) disable 686B on my 8K7A's to get decent performance. I've had USB headaches, AGP issues, PCI troubles, IRQ nightmares ... you name it. Maybe I've just been extremely unlucky?

IMHO, with a VIA chipset based board, it is luck of the draw. It might be stable, it might not. Depends on whether you configure the hardware correctly (avoid SoundBlaster products), avoid PCI RAID/SCSI controllers (latency nightmare), load the latest 4-in-1 pack, update to the latest VIA BIOS, and install a handful of third-party patches.

Go ahead and flame if you wish. I'm not gonna tone down the "rhetoric". Speaking only from personal experience with a wide variety of boards (including several of the latest KT266A flavors), I simply can't recommend them. YMMV.

BTW: Why don't you modify the title to "Who has issues with VIA-based systems?" ... You'll get a few more replies
