Should have an extra 6k next March first with my EOY bonus, tax return and wife's car being paid off. Going straight to credit card debt. We are also refinancing the house from 5.25 to a 10 year at sub 2.6 which should free up an additional $400 a month.

Oh and we just had another baby. Next year's taxes will be even better.

I used to get them back in January... but now that I am old, married, have rental income, multiple bank accounts, investment accounts, mortgages, etc... I am lucky to get them filed in February.

Tax on Severance/bonus is supposed to be withheld at the highest tax bracket as if that was the income every pay period.

wow, i pay about half that in taxes, around $8k, but i only get back about $300 and owe the state $2.
I don't know what you do to get that kind of money back, you either pay way more than i or your smart enough to use the system. Obviously, the smart thing for me to do would be to stop working and have some kids. i'd even get foodstamps and could buy those 16 oz steaks i see stamp people buy as i purchase my ramen noodles.

I'm waiting on my wife's W-2. She got let go the first week of January and her old employer is a bastard so they will probably mail it at 5:00 on the 31st. I will check the postmark though because I hate them and if it's late I will report them.

It's all academic though because even if I had her W-2 I couldn't file since the IRS won't have the K-1 ready until the second week of Feb.

If all goes well I'm looking at ~$3000 back which I'll use to pay off my car (2 years early). I usually don't get that much back but this year had a lot going on which made the withholding difficult. My goal is to get my effective tax rate <3% on a household earned income of ~$85,000.
