I still have a VIP722K but it's been acting up.

My understanding is it uses one tuner (if you have the feature turned on) to automatically record all prime time shows on ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX. We don't watch much prime time, how hard is it to delete programs? Do I have to delete them individually or do they end up in folders I can delete?

Another question:
How does the Joey hook up? Do I have to have a cable run from the Hopper to the Joey?

I have a hopper solution from dish. The coax cable from the dish runs inside to a splitter, one to the hopper and one to each Joey. The wireless Joey does not need a coax cable. I do recommend a hard wire cat5 cable to your router over wireless to the router. I watch a lot of DVRed tv on my iPad.

If you set up "prime time" recording then At night one of the three tuners can record abc, nbc, cbs and fox. Leaving only two tuners for recording or watching on other TVs or devices. The shows only stay on the DVR for 8 days. Upside you can then "hop" the commercials. You can only fast forward if you record a show like "Agents of Shield". Outside of prime time recording.

I have 3 TVs and I have run into the problem of running out of tuners. You can get a "Super Joey" and get 2 extra tuners.

If you have a PS3 or 4 you can get the Virtual Joey app, but they charge something like $8 each month for using it. I have not used that option.

You can run Netflix through the hopper. It is works pretty good.

So if my wife missed three weeks of Scandal, it overwrites previous episodes?

Yep but you can set to record a series. Then you can keep them until you want to binge watch.

If you record prime time show it will take up a tuner.

Something I found out when replacing hoppers...you can download the shows to an external drive, but only if there aren't still saved for prime time anytime. So you could have a series set to record, but not able to save off they last two episodes. Bummer if the hopper breaks and you want all recordings

So basically it's only redeeming quality is that it has 3 tuners?

I really like the hopper when compared to the old Comcast DVR I had. I also have used the transfer, " dish anywhere" feature. To me this feature is a little slow and cannot be done At the last minute.

I've had the hopper for almost 2 years. I love it.

YES, it will automatically record everything on the "Big 4" channels during prime time, but you CAN turn that feature off. (IIRC) You can also modify the "prime time" stuff to skip certain channels or times, but you have to do it a certain amount of time before it starts to record that day.
I love being able to "hop-hop-hop" through the commercials in stuff that's recorded, but honestly, it's not a lot different than just fast forwarding through them.

It's "easy-peasy" to delete stuff after it's recorded...but you can't actually stop a prime time show from recording...just a certain time slot.
