360 bought on launch day. This gets played alot with Rockband for gatherings and COD4, sports games...

Wii within about 2 weeks of launch. I have a few games for it. Wii Sports still gets played more than anything. My daughter was 2 1/2 when we got it and she loved the boxing. She can now play all the sports games, monkey ball, wii play. She plays the heck out of the thing.

PS3 was purchased 4 months ago right after I bought my 60'' SXRD. It is primarily my Blu-Ray player. I have a few games for it MGS4, heavenly sword, motorstorm, but I just don't play it very much.

I wonder how AT compares to the world at large with consoles, given that the Wii is still, 2 years after its release, outselling the Xbox 360 and PS3 combined. What percent of the nearly 20 million Wii's sold is sitting in a closet collecting dust? AT tends to be the more hard core crowd, and most casual people usually don't hang out here.

Incidentally, I think when FFXIII is released, the PS3 will see a major spike in sales.

I just wanna know how many discs the X360 of FFXIII will have. MGS4 used the 50GB dual-layer BR, so if FFXIII on PS3 is using the same disc, and FFXIII on X360 is using dual-layer DVDs, the X360 version will use up to 6 discs. That's the most discs for console, ever!

It will probably look something like this

You people are all crazy, wasting that much money.

I play PC if I want to game by myself. If I'm with friends, we play Smash Bros on my Wii.

Why would you have a Wii for parties? There are so many better + more fun party things you could be doing...

I have all 3, plus a second 360 and a modded Xbox, because they are all fun, and all but the Wii, see some duty as media centers.

As to the commentary about "wasting money", are you serious? I maybe spent $1500 including the extra controllers and stuff, many of us will blow that much, or more, on eating out alone, this year. Now, if I could just convince my wife to see the home audio stuff I want that way! :frown:

Why a Wii for parties? Because we did our thing till we were in our 30's, we are over it. We have a kid now, and the Wii= good, clean, fun, that we and our guests, can, and do, all enjoy. I know UT is still a 20 something, but we have a few friends in that age group, and they have a blast too. That's not to say the blender doesn't get used, or beer get drank.

Xbox 360 Elite: Bought this after my Premium went on the RRoD treadmill of doom. Still love it, and consider it my primary next-gen console. Best game library, friendliest interface, and the XBL ecosystem is amazing. I have some quibbles with some choices that Microsoft made, but I still like it the most, by far.

Playstation 3 60gb: Bought this along with the Wii, but considerably after the 360. Mostly purchased as an upscaling PS2 and BR-D player - I own like a total of five PS3 games, compared to like 35 for the 360 and 20 for the PS2. I don't regret buying it, but I am not totally sold on it as a gaming system. This may change when they get some more exclusive RPGs out - Disgaea 3 is a good start, and so is the upcoming Eternal Sonata.

Wii: Bought this with the PS3, way after the 360. It basically gathers dust unless there's a hot new release or we have friends over. The games simply have no depth, and feel like dumbed-down versions of their Gamecube predecessors (glares at MKW). That said, the Gamecube compatibility is nice for when you feel like sampling some of the good old days of the Gamecube. I think I have like six games for the Wii, and five for the 'cube.

Playtime-wise, my PS3 sees the most time, but only because it's my PS2. Otherwise, the 360.

Xbox 360 - Ok, I don't actually own this, but my neighbor across the street does and I've played with them quite a bit. Won't get one myself because most of the games I want to play are on PC or PS3 as well. Also, I don't like faulty RROD type hardware.

Wii - Bought this first. Picked up nearly as many Gamecube games as Wii titles.

The games simply have no depth, and feel like dumbed-down versions of their Gamecube predecessors (glares at MKW).

QFT of the year! Mario Kart Double Dash and Super Smash Bros. for the Gamecube are far superior titles. I do like Zelda and Metroid on the Wii though a lot and Mario Galaxy is just amazing. There's a lot of chaff to sift though to get the sweet wheat available in terms of games on the Wii. I love the VC titles too. Sure you can emulate a lot of the VC stuff, but there's a lot to be said for just firing up the console and playing immediately with no fuss. Now that I have a PS3, this does gather dust from time to time, but it will stay because I do still play it and my nearly 5 year old son loves a lot of the titles on it. It's a great family and friends multiplayer console, with a few games that give me a lot of return on investment from both the Gamecube and Wii libraries (I never owned a Gamecube, so those games are all new to me).

Playstation 3 - Got a launch model console because I have a library of around 40-50 Playstation and Playstation 2 games. If I ever got my money's worth out of a console, it would have to be from my fatty PS2 launch console. That said, the PS3 with full BC is great. No more shuffling memory cards, Bluetooth wireless DS3 controllers are perfect in every way for PS/PS2/PS3 gameplay, I even get better load times for all my older games, and graphics are superior on PS2 games due to upscaling.

I'm having a lot of fun with the PS3 titles as well (Overlord, GRID, MGS4, Folklore, Assassin's Creed, and Madden 09 so far). Blu-ray playback is nice, but I have a very nice HTPC for that. The HTPC runs Tversity and the convenient video and audio playback through the PS3 gets used a lot around my house. It's just faster and more convenient to playback most files through the PS3 dashboard with Tversity running, than to open and resize the video on the HTPC with my DiNovo Mini keyboard/mouse (it's also easier for my wife and son to use since pretty much only I know how the HTPC is configured and where the actual files are). The HTPC is mainly a dedicated Tversity machine, Folding@Home box, and Blu-ray/DVD jukebox (yea dedicated 750GB drive for Blu-ray and DVD ISO files...yes, I own the original discs thank you very much). If I didn't have Tversity or WMP11 serving files to the PS3, it would see a lot less usage, but it truly has become a media hub for me and my family due to the networked features of the console. Overall, it was a good purchase and it sees daily (sometimes 24/7 due to Folding@Home support) use.

The PS3 has also turned into the dominate media streaming device over the 360 thanks to how easy it is to convert MKVs for the system.

Can you explain how you convert MKV for each system? I thought it would be the same since they both play the same video codecs. Am I totally wrong on this?

Oh I only have a Wii and 360 by the way.

They both do support the same codecs, but there are a few differences. There are a few ultilities out there that can quickly remux MKVs into formats each system can use.

For example, for the 360 you can use XenonMKV or GotSent. These can remux MKVs into MP4 files very quickly, but there are limitations on the 360 will accept. The surround sound, if the MKV file has it, will be reduced to 2-channel audio. The 360 also has 4 GB file size limit for MP4 files. So if the file is larger than 4 GB it will need to be split in two or the 360 will not play it.

To get around these issues you would have to convert to WMV format. I've actually done this a fair amount of times and it's rather tedious and long. Going to WMV requires a transcode and the process on my quad core PC still usually took 10-12 hours. For people will slower machines the process can top 24 hours. The sad part is, there were a few times where I'd do a 12 hour encode only to find the audio was not in sync or that the video itself transcode screwed up half way through for whatever reason. But then I discovered MKV2VOB.

MKV2VOB is a utility that can remux the x264 video and AC3 audio in an MKV file into a VOB file. The process normally takes 1-2 minutes and the PS3 can play them perfectly. The video is 100% perfect to source since it's a remux and not a transcode, the surround sound audio it retained, and there's no file size limitation on the PS3. If the MKV has DTS audio then MKV2VOB will change it to AC3, but that process doesn't take long... maybe 15-30 minutes. There are a few MKVs that require a minor transcode, but MKV2VOB handles that as well. The transcodes take maybe 2-4 hours and are perfect pretty much every time.

That's the difference.

Thanks for the explanation. I recently started using GotSent to play the MKV files on the 360. I was aware that the audio had to be transcoded from AC3. So the advantage is that the PS3 can play VOB files, and doesn't have the 4 GB size limitation?

I wonder if we will ever get VOB support on the 360?

I wish I were a 20-something! I'm closer to 40 than I am to 30. Luckily, I'm a DINK (dual income, no kids) family, and my wife is very understanding on my expensive hobbies, which video gaming is relatively cheap compared to....

If my wife only knew how much I spent on watches and road bikes when compared to video games, she'd really clock me over the head.

I own 2 out of 3, but have access to the Wii.

360 - I didn't buy it, it was given to me by Pepsi. I rarely play it, because it makes so much damn noise.

PS3 - Bought the MGS4 bundle. I bought it because I wanted another Blu-ray player, but I game on it more than I thought I would.

Wii - It's not mine, but it's in my basement. Gf bought it for my nephew who I watch 5-6 days a week. It was fun at first, but even he would rather play the PS3, and he's 7. Wii sports, Play & Mario cart racing grew old quick.

long story on why i kept my ps3, i was a guy who got it at launch, partially because i camped out for 4 days, and then the system was worth nothing more than retail, if that, i didnt want to walk back into best buy and return it...so i sold my gamecube collection to make up for it.. its not a bad system by any means, and it has some good games, but i would have paid this much for a 360 to be honest

360...cause its just awesome, if you are a gamer, you owe yourself this system, it has and does everything at this point and i love the thing.

wii- for parties...thats about it..

Xbox 360 and a Wii here without a PS3 so I don't apply, but will be buying a PS3 later.

Why?

Wii - fun with a bunch of friends
X360 - was free
PS3 - few exclusive titles I'd like (although fewer now that FF went multi-platform...hmmm...)

I have all three.

The 360 is the gaming rig. I have the Wii because my gf likes it (and it has some silly-fun games that I enjoy as well). The PS3...well...it's my blu-ray player. I don't have a single game for it and have had it for over a year.

Got the Wii for x-mas but I hardly play it. My brother moved back home and brought his PS3 with him. My friend gave me his 360 for a couple months while he gets ready for his LSAT.

The courts will see to that.....

Yup, her lawyer will see to it that she gets your Wii, but may let you keep your Nintendo.
