There's no comparison between:

a real MBA,

which is a difficult degree earned a any of about 20 or so top-flight universities,

vs.

a "phony" MBA,

which is a device where the schools use that as a way to pull in business people to make money for themselves.
An "MBA" from such places is a joke.

So, anything other than the Top 20 is a joke? :disgust:

Actually, considering the cost of an MBA anything outside of the top 5 is a joke. My brother is graduating from Anderson UCLA this summer - it's ranked around 14 - 16 typically. He'll start his career probably making 80k with 98k in student loans (which I've co-signed :Q). A friend of mine will be graduating from Tuck at Dartmouth - ranked in the top 5 MBA programs - next year and he expects a salary of 120k+ when he graduates with about 80k or so in student loans.

The top 5 start paying off right after graduation (when the value of your MBA is highest) while the next 15 take longer to pay off. Beyond the top 20 you just won't see the benefits of an MBA. The quality of the school is not determined just by the curriculum but the overall experience - the people you will be networking with, professors with industry experience, exposure to real business leaders (who quite often are alumni of the same school), the companies that come to your campus for recruiting - all these factors drop dramatically beyond the top 20 - so yes, I would agree with scott that an MBA program from a school outside the top 20 is indeed a joke.

It doesn't hurt to do an MBA from outside the top 20 as long as you are not sacrificing an alternate option. Between pursuing an MBA outside the top 20 and investing that time in a career, I would easily choose the latter.

Yes, I think so, pretty much.

There're sooo many schools out there, in one sense competing for student attendance & consequent funding. It's a way to get fully employed people back into the school, who pay a lot and who also may become donors later.

But I think there's no faint trace of the high rigor of the real MBA programs in the top schools.

I really thought about getting an MBA after my BA, but then I realized I can learn the same things in the real world if my goal in life was to run and invest in businesses. I now view it as a waste of time.

I do have a PhD though....

Vulgar!

I'd estimate that about 1/3 of the entering class in my program already had Ph.D.'s in other fields like EE, Physics, etc., and there were a couple of medical doctors, and several attorneys. Even a couple of mothers - now those were the truly hard workers!!!

All going back for MBA in a top flight program.

Hows about a dual MBA/engineering major? I still have about 6 months to decide what colleges I want to go to but... heck I'm not even sure what i want to do - they're both appealing. I don't have the wits to get into the top 5 (Darthmouth, Yale, Harvard, etc I'm guessing are in there) but I'm sure the top 20 range is acceptable.

I disagree with some of your points. Considering probably 75% of the average joe blow couldn't make it into a top 5 MBA school, and as competitive as it is, how do you expect everyone to go to a Top 5 school?

You're right in that the value of a Top 5-10 MBA program is considerably higher than that of a "joke" school. But to call all other schools a joke is ridiculous. My ex and several of her friends went to Duke's Fuqua. She now works at Frito Lay as manager over Cheetos and Fritos Innovation. Frito Lay recruits heavily from Duke, Kellog, and a local private school here in Dallas called SMU. SMU is recognized as the best school in the DFW area. (Which probably is one of the reasons why it costs $72K) The MBA holders from SMU at Frito make just as much as the Fuqua/Kellog graduates.

IE, I'm trying to say location makes a large difference in the success of finding a job and your career success. Obviously Joe Blow from SMU wouldn't do quite so well finding a job in MA or NY as someone from Harvard or Fuqua, simply due to name recognition. Or overseas. The power of a Top 5 MBA is incredible but simply put, to blanket all others as a joke is ridiculous.

MBA programs are about networking, networking, and....networking. Yes you will learn a few things, but it's really about networking.
If you haven't figured it out by now, it's not what you know, but who you know that matters.

Who you know will get you in the door and once there you will only stay based on what you know. You had better know a lot to even think networking is going to do much for you. Powerful people can see through a poser. Most times if you know the "who" you already "know" what will get you ahead. The two are not nearly as disconnected as you imply.

My best friend has his MBA from UCLA in finance. He makes well into the 6 figures and owns a million dollar home in Seal Beach.

I myself do not have my MBA. I'm thinking about it...but it will be from a proper University.

A top 60 MBA is worth it for sure if you're a low paying soft major like Liberal Arts/Humanities.

For an engineer who's already earning a good amount of bucks, a higher tier program is needed to make a substantive gain (i.e. Top 20).

Engineers really don't need an MBA unless they want to switch careers/industries. An engineer will get A LOT MORE mileage getting certs like a CCIE, etc. Having one's company pay for a part-time MBA is more sensible since it's VERY expensive.

I'm still asuming you're able to learn enough to do well in the MBA program.
