Most of us who came over from the old board signed up on the day Fusetalk was implemented, which was October 9th of 1999:

NFS4: October 9, 1999 10:50AM
Russ: October 9, 1999 2:12AM (Russ was a beta tester...)
Red: October 9, 1999 2:39PM
John: October 9,1999 6:28AM
Compuwiz1: October 9, 1999 9:37AM

Assuming you mean Anand's site in general, and not just this board...

There are several members who even pre-date my crowd, which is Russ, Harvey, and LED. I know Bighammer and Red Dawn have been around a long time, I just can't remember if they date this far back or not.

To me, AnandTech time is marked by several big events. The first one which really got the members coming is the great Harvey - Tom Pabst war. That one raged for a little while, until Harvey finally just let it drop. Tom continued to take cheap shots at Harvey on his own site (much like he did with Anand, and many others he feels threatened by). I understand Tom go into it with a Quake3 developer, or something...I had long since stopped going by Tom's at that point.

The next event in AT forums history is the forming of "off-topic". Up until this point, AnandTech forums were all under a single general board. The spark which formed "Off-Topic"? - RELIGION (surprise, surprise.) And here's surprise #2 - I was outspoken, along with Harvey, *against* the religion discussions. On the other side was Netopia (Joe), and NWM (can you believe it?) back when NWM was trying to convince himself/herself to be a Jehovah's Witness. Red Dawn was in there, but I can't remember where he stood on all of it. In the end, Off-Topic was formed, and here we are.

The third big boom for AT forums was the "Hot Deals" section. This was, and is, the most dangerous forum we have...because while it attracts many great new members, it also attracts some very self-centered and difficult people who don't have much interest in our "community". Another 'believe it or not'...Hot Deals was formed over ONE SINGLE ITEM...the great Buy.com Hitachi monitor "crisis". So many people were upset about it, and so many people wanted updates and organized response, that a new forum was formed. Now it has changed quite a bit, but the origins are there. If you're new, ask someone what a "WMC (Wounded Monitor Child)" is...you'll get a kick out of it.

Well, that's AnandTech History 101. I may have stumbled on a fact or two, but that's it to the best of my knowledge. If anyone wants to add, it may be interesting.

I signed up here on FuseTalk day one (October 9, 1999 9:32 PM), but was a lurker only on the UBB board. Hmmm, with the new version of FuseTalk, looks like you can't easily find your ID number any more. Mine is 1616.

I signed on, forgot about the forums for several months, and then really started posting/contributing after that long period of no posting.

Good to see you! I haven't seen you posting around here much...lurking and finding the good ones, eh?
I think you pretty much summed up the big events. I remember when all those damned religious posts were clogging up the main forum. What was that damn guy's name...I can't remember it now, but the one that essentially created the OT forum because of all his crazy rants. Can't believe I'd forget the name of someone so annoying.

EDIT

You forgot to mention RipRidah and the now-infamous Staples Is Suck.

Rio modestly omits the valiant battle he fought against those who were converting OT into a chat room.

And relative to the WMC saga, Carolyn posted here not too long ago (under a different handle). That was just starting when I found AnandTech and that's what got me hooked.

The board would only benefit if people like Rio posted more. (hint)

I browsed Anand's site for quite a while before I actually joined. Anandtech Forums is my favorite place on the web. I've had the forums as my home page for I can't remember how long.

Thanks, Kranky, that was very nice of you to say.

Hi, Adul

If this helps date me around here (AnandTech goes back considerably further):

I found AnandTech when I was trying to decide how to upgrade my Cyrix PR200. Several of us would post both here and CPU Central around that time(I wonder how Sunil is doing these days...). The raging debate was whether the Pentium 233 was really better than the AMD K6 233, or if the software was just "optimized" for it. Kind of like a 'chicken or the egg' argument...

Within a few months of that, I remember buying a Matrox M3D because the computer store said "It's the same as the Monster 3D". LOL. I ended up getting a rendition V2k, and sticking with it long after 3dfx had won over the market...

I actually built and sold systems for a while, getting my parts from Josh (forgot the name of his company...I bet Harv or Russ remembers). That was the good old days, when you could build and sell a Pentium II system cheaper than the stores, give people a much better machine, and actually make enough to justify warranting the parts. So much for the good old days...now I have to be content benefitting as a consumer.

Sorry for the nostalgia...that's about all I'm good for, other than a good flame war.
