Who has gone back to the gym and what kind of mask are you wearing?

We're not requiring masks at our gym during workouts. We require them on entrance and while moving to designated spaces.

(We're a crossfit gym so YMMV)

Have you gone back to the gym in the last month and what kind of mask are you wearing?
In New York, gyms are still closed.
It's going to suck seeing how far off I am from peak shape but at the very least hitting the hills has gotten my ass back to consistently biking and running. Legs feel good. Even broke out my vibrams. I started getting caught up in the "gains" trap with lifts and started to neglect cardio so its actually been a valuable change of pace. All the nagging sore spots or tender areas finally got some rest after 30 years lifting. 6 months off really did the trick. I don't think I'm tossing 350 up on the bench immediately on return but I'm ok with that. I have no doubt I can get back to my happy #'s

Not sure what I'm going to do when my gym reopens.
I can deal with waiting a few more months until a vaccine becomes available.
I am not putting my self at risk for permanent lung damage or becoming a statistic because some prick close talker decides "It's his right to breath in everyone's face".
Fortunately, my gym is usually never crowded so I could probably start back at traditional time slots where the place is empty.

Been open for a month, no mask. S.C. Have to wear one going into a restaurant but can take it off when we sit down. Restaurants have this magic bubble thing around the tables.

Been back for awhile now. Neither of our gyms require masks, their employees wear them. Only one has kid care, so we go to that one since our youngest is 3. That gym also has 2 people who non stop clean equipment. Neither of us wears a mask.

When gyms were closed, she worked out at home with TRX, bands, and a few weights. My work has a few gyms, so I never really missed anything. But they have mostly machines, we're not supposed to use free weights. They have some, but not very heavy.

Gyms are still closed here in NJ, so I bought a bike. I need a good 2-3 months to get back in shape.

I used to workout at the gym at work. I haven't been back in a while so I just started working out on my little corner of the basement. I don't think I'd go back to a regular gym yet, but if I did I'd def have a mask on. I'd just wear one of the ones my mom made. Nice comfy cloth.

Decided to start going back to the gym as I literally was turning into pudding. Have to wear a mask the whole time and wipe everything down. Its a small gym that usually has less than 7 people inside at any given time.

Health club reopened a couple of months ago. I have been doing cardio on upright bike (wearing a mask) and lap swimming (obviously not wearing a mask). No weights because the weight/machine areas are already too crowded with mask-less people for me to feel comfortable. Everyone is supposed to wear masks except when exercising, but most are just taking their masks off as soon as they hit the floor and never put them back on. I really cannot see any reason why masks aren't required while doing weights.

Anyway, these are the masks that I wear at the health club and everywhere else:

https://www.headcovers.com/medical-surgical-face-mask-men-large/

They are a little expensive, but have a water resistant membrane, adjustable ear loops, a pocket for a paper filter, and are very soft and comfortable. YMMV

i wear a n95 16 hours a day and lift weights at the house. i wouldnt have a issue lifting with the mask but sweating into it really isnt optimal so i might switch to a surgical for that purpose but i have been wearing n95's for going on 5 months now so why stop now. seems like the virus is going crazy, so funny to hear all these folks going to restaurants and gyms in this pandemic.

You are wearing a mask while working out at home? Why though.

I'm all about risk avoidance, but there's also probability to deal with. Being in my gym is low risk - high ceilings, constant airflow, significant spacing (~250 sq ft / person). Eating at a restaurant with proper spacing or eating outdoors is low risk.

I haven't gone back yet and probably won't for like 4 weeks or so since we have a newborn in the house, but I got one of the Adidas masks for working out. It's definitely more breathable and feels more light weight than the normal blue disposable ones I was wearing.

Sounds like your gym is taking the right steps. Going to the gym overall is considered one of the most high risk activities though (category 8/9 in this list). link Even with adequate spacing, are users allowed to go from one area to another? If the machines are not cleaned properly between every user that could be a serious problem.

Gyms have reopened in my area at reduced capacity, and I really want to go. I just dont feel comfortable with it. I am in generally good health, but in a "high risk" group only because of my age. If I were living alone I would probably still go, but my wife is over 70 and has several other conditions that put her at very high risk, so I am toughing it out at home, trying to do some sort of exercise most days of the week.

We have approx 4000 sq ft of space and have maximum 15 people at any given time. Nobody shares equipment and all equipment is wiped down with disinfectant after use. For the most part, we have 6 ft spacing between everyone, and nobody faces each other - everyone faces towards the front of the space. I do have a few members that consider themselves higher risk and stay towards the back of the building so they have 20-30ft spacing between anyone else.

With all that said, we also have a total of 50 members and know them all personally. We've had a few members contract COVID or been possibly exposed outside the gym and they've all stayed home until cleared - so we're not as concerned with having a random person who feels not 100% but goes to the gym anyways and spreads it.

I posted this in OT but will post it in here since it's relevant.

Just worked out with my Under Armour mask. It's better than the Adidas ones for sure. It still does "cave in" a bit when I am breathing heavy and while it doesn't completely stick to your mouth, it definitely tries. It's better than the Adidas one by far though.

It feels a bit small vertically. Like I wish it hugged my chin a bit more on the bottom of my chin like the Adidas one. Because of this I notice it sliding down slightly on my nose if I'm making faces while lifting. It never slide off my nose exposing my nostrils completely or anything, but it felt like it could have.

I also wish the wire in the nose piece area held better. Mine definitely doesn't seem to be bending as much as I'd like to hold the curvature around my nose.

All of these issues I didn't really notice though until the mask was basically saturated in sweat. And these are pretty minor issues overall I liked it. I do think that for $30 that the price is stupid expensive, especially since I got 3 of the Adidas ones for like $18 or something. These should be like $10 max for one. They know what they are doing though because while I was in the store yesterday 3 people came in asking for them and bought them. But that is just the UA tax I guess.

ive gone a few times. make us wear a mask on the way in and out. not a chance i would workout in a mask. the traffic has been greatly reduced which is exactly what I expected. scared or at risk, stay home.

that said, I have bought equipment to workout at home. Not a chance I am being caught again when the governor shuts it all down.

at what point do we realize that promoting healthy lifestyles -> working out, eating right, supplementation are more effective than lockdowns?

In the long term, perhaps, at least exercise and good diet (supplementation should not really be necessary if one eats carefully). In the short term in the midst of a pandemic, they certainly are not more effective than shutdowns, or even wearing a mask.

My gym finally opened up a few weeks ago and I've been going with my cloth mask.
Fortunately, our gym mandates full time usage of face masks and social distancing.
Those dumb enough to think that masks don't need to be worn have quickly had their asses corrected or had their membership revoked.
For the most part, aside from the occasional sneaky jerks, everyone is respectful.

Everyone from the powerlifters to the runners have been able to get the work done with masks.

And sorry...all your healthy living isn't going to make you immune to Covid-19 and prevent you from spreading to others.
Remember...the point of the mask is to contain the spread.

I don't go to gyms but I have hopped back on my bike for long rides in NYC, and during some parts of the ride I wear my mask. I've tried riding with a 3M N95 with breathing valve plus some other cloth masks, but I wanted the protection of an N95 with some of the comfort of the cloth.

Enter the MEOAir lite from New Zealand. It's the equivalent of an N95 but very breathable and comfortable. Plus no valve so you are protecting others. I would recommend it highly for activities where you want breathability with good protection.

Took a week to get to NJ using standard shipping.

How long do you use a single mask, and do you sterilize it somehow between uses?
