I've done it through 23AndMe and was fairly satisfied. Didn't really find out too much more than what I already knew (which actually ain't much) as far as where in the world my ancestors came from. I also haven't gone through every single report they have (they actually release new reports for you fairly regularly; I have a bunch more results now than when they first became available).

I was a little surprised to learn there was a fairly recent ancestor from Great Britain and I'm like 13% Finnish. Also I'm about 1/4 Native American (great-grandparent was full blooded, I think?) and was expecting to see that in the results (it's only 0.1%), but according to 23AndMe, "In North America, however, Native American ancestry tends to be five or more generations back, so that little DNA evidence of this heritage remains." I don't really understand their explanation but whatevs.

I'm thinking about doing it through another company, just to compare the results. Also I think I'll order the 23AndMe service for my Mom for Mother's Day. She had actually asked me about it recently so I think she'll like it!

I've thought about it for a long time being that I am "supposedly" made up of 5 nationalities. But I haven't yet as I don't want to know that I came from some shithole country from the Netherlands or so.

Chill dude, I was joking. I was also picking on the commercial where a woman finds out that she's 20% Nigerian and decides to adopt that as her main heritage. News flash, hon, you're 80% SOMETHING ELSE!

I decided to do a wth, let's see if by chance there are some surprises in my background. I'm basically a northwest European mutt, but my grandmother told us years ago that someone in her family married a native American woman, so I'm curious to see if that's true as that might show up. If it turns out to be true, I assure one and all that I will not do an Elizabeth Warren.

I doubt I'm allowed to say. Some sites have better listed privacy settings, provided you make the right selections, but even then they could change those on you in the future. I'm also not confident their IT security practices would keep your data safe

I'm very concerned about the privacy aspect of it so probably will avoid it. My sister did it so I'll have to live vicariously through her results.

I thought of doing something similar, like putting my name as hispanic and another as my real last name and see if the results come back as the same. I am the last of my kind (last namewise) and want to test the accuracy as they really can't trace my last name without some real regional DNA results.

Haven't checked it, won't check it for 2 reasons.
1.) it costs money
2.) Somehow, somewhere, someone may try to use it against me.

I'm doing the one that measures your telomeres to determine your biological age. But they also do ancestry. I have an extensive genealogy that someone did for my dad's family that goes back centuries but in recent history, like since the 1800's or so at least, those folks were from the deep south so I suspect that I'm probably part black what with people boinking their slaves and whatnot. So I'm really interested to find out. If I find out that I'm part Nigerian can I then wear dreadlocks w/o being accused of cultural appropriation?

No, but you can wear the hat like the one the lady is wearing in the commercial when she finds out she's 20% Nigerian. then you can cry like she does.

Found out through Ancestry.com that my wife's family were Blucher's.
She hates it, but now I go around introducing her Frau Blucher.

LOL
I was getting gas the yesterday at the Loves truck stop in my little town and a guy with a horse trailer pulls up. all is quite while we are pumping and one of the horses lets out a LOUD whinny. that scene immediately came to mind.

I was totally obsessed with my family line a few years ago and did the Ancestry DNA test. It help confirming things and filled in a few black holes. one of the things it confirmed is that my 11th great grandfather and his brother did come over around 1640's and landed in Hampton NY.
and that they came from Kent England. going past and getting info out of the English logs is pretty difficult for us peasants. before England, my name is from Holland.

during the early 1800's my paternal grandfather married a scott woman of the McAdams clan and one of my aunts was killed in a Indian raid in south Carolina. also my 7th grandfather served in the continental army and I was able to get enough evidence to present to the Sons of the Revolution. they took it to review for accuracy. a few months later the SOA president of Colorado called me and said all was confirmed. I got a very nice document that they already framed for me.

Yeah except you and your sister share enough DNA they basically have your DNA from her test.
