Meh, I don't use the tiles

Um...ok? Your loss really. The netflix app beats using a browser any day especially when you can get almost twice the bitrate out of the app (3000 vs 5800).

People really need to get off this "I hate Windows 8" bandwagon.

What devices support it or can tell your getting the superHD? I've got an Xbox One, Apple TV 3 and WD Live Hub to pick from.

I like Win 8 on my tablet. I don't on my desktop so I use Start8.

Ok?

I never bothered with Start8 or any of that, so I don't know about this question: can you not include the Windows Store apps on the Start8 launcher?
If it can't, that's a half-assed product that should be dumped.

Also, it sounds like March could be seeing Update 1 to Windows 8.1, which will be including the ability to pin Windows Store apps to the taskbar, and run the apps in windowed-mode in the desktop environment.

So if you just HAVE to avoid Windows Store apps because you must absolutely avoid anything to do with the Windows 8 interface, you may have hope coming soon.
If that's not enough, well... take what you got then. Why refuse to accept a new interface and, in the process, stubbornly accept lower-quality video streaming when you can nearly double the video quality by simply accessing a very easy to use app that's accessible from a very easy to use interface.
Pin Netflix to the very left-side of the Start screen, it's simple to access.
No idea how Start8 interacts with this, probably negatively, but press the Start button on the keyboard and type "Net" and if installed Netflix will probably be the first result, thus typing Net and hitting the Enter key will launch. Five consecutive key strokes, no mouse required. Start, N, E, T, Enter.
Some might have other applications that start with "Net" - adjust as necessary, I guess. I can almost guarantee adding "F", so NETF, will work forever. I can drop the T and still immediately launch Netflix as well, as it beats out "News" alphabetically... but I am sure someone has an application or two that would appear higher.

I use Start8 but I use the windows 8 start menu with the app. So when I click where the windows 7 menu would pop up I get a windows 8 styled menu with a search box. I type Netflix, Xbox (for xbox smart glass), steam or whatever I want to open. It will open it either in the Tiled mode or desktop mode depending on the app. So I can launch WIndows 8 netflix app from desktop mode and when I click the top of the screen and drag the hand down to close the app I am presented with the desktop again.

Looks like this for my desktop.

Your Apple TV can get Super HD. The Xbox One cannot yet. I don't know why it cannot since the PS4 does.

It may not say SuperHD in the movie info when browsing through the app, my PS4 does not. However, it does say SuperHD when I pull up the stream info.

Don't bother watching a movie via the HBO channel. MPEG-2 with 19Mb/sec at 1080i = absolute trash. Audio for most services is still just Dolby Digital, you need to get a Blu-ray to get anything better.

This.

You're talking about an at old encoding standard lol. But the quality issue isn't a huge deal if you got a tiny display that is low quality. Wouldn't worry about it unti youre above at least 50 inches tvsize.

Thanks, I tried that and it's workable. Only downside is that I sit about 10-12 feet from my monitor (60" plasma) so some of the text is too small.

I'm 6feet from my 55" so I can read fine on the TV when I use it that way. Normally I just have my PC at the desk with my 27" 1440p monitor. I usually run netflix from my PS4 though so I don't need to worry about this usage all that much. It's worth it for those apps that use the tile interface without swapping to the tiles anyway.

Netflix super HD is the first streaming option I'm completely happy with. Its better than the HD signal I get from cable, that's for sure. It is a substantial upgrade over their normal HD, amazon, etc. Some of the newer smart TV's support it. The 60 series Panasonic plasmas do for instance.

I haven't tried the Netflix app on my VT60.
Yep, it's 1080 Super HD.

And it does the 3d content too.

Does it? I figure the Netflix page is necessarily absolutely up-to-date for every model of TV out there - but I guess Roku is indeed still missing from 3D support.

If the TV has it, that would be great. I forgot about 3D on Roku. It seems the top stream is also double SuperHD, which is to say, the 3D composite is basically SuperHD. Can't do anything about that audio track being somewhat lackluster (not in comparison to cable), but that'd be fine. Renting 3D is typically next to impossible most other routes, and for most 3D titles that I only care to rent, I also wouldn't go terribly crazy about missing uncompressed audio.
Then again, many 3D titles are action films. Others, regardless of genre, have image quality that demand the best - I'll be buying Gravity, even though I've never seen it. I'm fairly certain I'll be happy. My hunches are usually good.

Either way, there are probably a few titles I would agree to let myself watch in 3D on Netflix. If said titles are on Netflix in 3D, is another question. Never looked for 3D.

Ok, found the devices that support it. Odd that the Xbone is left out. How do you tell if you are getting it? (particularly on the Apple TV)

When streaming on my TV and I hit the Info button on the remote there is a box in the top left corner that shows the time elapsed, time to end, video format and audio format.
Unfortunately, clicking Info again doesn't turn it off. It just hides the time counter and video format but the box is still there.

I guess they are all different. My tv won't give me that information as far as I can tell.

Its grossly out of date. Even the manufacture specs page isn't super reliable. Only way to know for sure seems to be user reports.
