I have a Dell Inspiron 640m Core2Duo laptop that I purchased in 2006 that is still my primary laptop. 2GB RAM and running Windows XP. It was getting a little long in tooth about two years ago but with the addition of a SSD it snapped right back to usable status.

This T7200 Core2Duo has been a real workhorse. I'll finally retire this one when Broadwell arrives.

Just wondering if anyone else is using an old laptop as your primary day-to-day laptop?

8 years is quite a long time in computer years I would think.

Have an HP Dv7-4285DX I got literally 2 weeks before Sandy Bridge launched. I was out of the internet loop for quite awhile there. I threw in an SSD just a few weeks ago. It flies.

Mine is a Dell Latitude D410 with Pentium M @ 800mhz (released early 2005). Works great for everything I need with Linux and DOS. Old laptops FTW

i'm rocking a lenovo t61 core2 duo t7500 with an SSD. best laptop I have ever had. my boss even commented on how old it was, yet it was still snappier than his new dell full of bloatware. However, when running bit excel pivot tables it really shows its age.

Lenovo T-510 acquired August 2010. I would call it "middle aged." Has been upgraded with SSD, and is still peppy enough for it's mission in life. Will possibly replace in 2015.

IBM T-30 Thinkpad. Works fine, installing Ubuntu as a dual boot with the exsisting XP Pro OS and will be handed down for my friend's daughter's first computer.

I'm using a secondhand Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop originally bought in 2003 - P4 2.66GHz + ATI Mobility 7500C 32MB GPU + 40GB IDE HDD. Works OK most of the time but can't play DVDs from disc (installs, games, CDs run fine) and will usually crash when coming out of standby/hibernation. So I never use those options.

The, effectively unreplaceable, CMOS battery apppears to have completely died recently and that caused the BIOS to revert to factory settings. This means I now have the faults other users complained about at the time: no F2/F12 functionality. So I can't get into the BIOS or easily alter boot priority if required. It also totally refuses to recognised the second 1GB stick of RAM it was doing so most of the time before so I'm stuck with just 1GB. The drop in speed and smoothness of operation is very noticeable.

When I get both my desktop up and running I'll take the bull by the horns and try flashing the BIOS to one of the later ones and upgrading the HDD but I don't want to risk of doing that now.

So not perfect by a long way but for an 11 year old laptop it still does its main jobs more than adequately. With its decent for its time GPU it is also a fine retro gaming machine capable of running most pre-2004 games like the Core Studio Tomb Raiders, The Longest Journey, Broken Sword, and old C&C for example.

About a month ago I recently recycled my IBM Thinkpad 390E (Pentium II 333MHz I think), it turned on and ran Windows XP just fine but it wasn't my primary PC.

My wife is using an HP DV2700 with a Core2Duo T5550. It has a sticker on it that says "Editor's Choice 2006"

It was sort of ho-hum when given to me but +4GB of ram, an SSD, and going from Windows Vista to 7 makes it a very capable machine. Screen res isn't great though.

I've got an HP Pavilion DV5000 with a Celeron M CPU 410 @ 1.46GHz. It's running XP Home Edition Version 2002 SP2 with 2 GB of RAM.

My oldest daily driver is a 2012 15" MBP, so I don't really have anything old anymore that I use myself..

How much did that SSD cost?

I am using a Thinkpad Z61T with an upgraded 128GB Samsung Pro SSD and the max CPU for my motherboard. Windows 8.1! It flies! Boot up in 10 seconds! It think I have 3MB RAM - max. Purchased back in 2007 new - $1,200. Added $400 more of upgrades including new Intel 802.11n dual band card and new fan! I just waiting for the 802.11ac to be available from Intel that will fit my Thinkpad and be under $30 - which will probably be 5 years from now! LOL! I scare to look how much this card is right now! Got be over a $100 if it exist!

HP Touchsmart TX2. Circa around 2009.

Turion 64 X2 RM-72 @2.1GHz
4gb RAM
Samsung EVO 840
Windows 7 Pro

I've got much better machines hanging around but this is the one I tend to take with me. I really like the keyboard, the screen is decent and I don't really have to worry about it. It gets the job done anyway. I will be looking to replace in 2015 though.

I have an old thinkpad X40 (~2003-2004 time frame). Old pentium M with 786 Meg of ram. For some reason, it's my most loved laptop. I reach for it more often than the X1 carbon, zenbook, X200, X201, X61t etc. I love it so much that I actually bought a non-standard SSD for it (not SATA). Its built is super.

I wish it had a more modern CPU (C2D would be great) and a little more memory (2-4gig) and can take a modern SATA SSD.

It currently now runs the software for my golf launch monitor. I've never seen a better form fitting laptop.

I also have Dell Inspiron 640m in 2021 and it's working perfectly fine except for the battery. I am writing this because Iam planning to sell it. When I went to a shop they offered only 20 dollars and said this was trash. For how much did you sell your Inspiron 640m ? ( Sorry for my bad English)

Lol you realize the original thread is from 2014? I didn't at first and thought it was crazy those old machines were still in use and operational.
Be happy they not charging you for a recycle fee

My laptop Dell laptop, I mentioned back then, which was showing signs of developing problems actually remained very usuable but died completely two years later, out of the blue. One day working perfectly OK, next boot terminal BSOD. Best guess from the error code was that the GPU had died.

13+ years of varied use and much heavier (daily) during the last 6 years too, sad it went but that is a damned good run you can't complain about. If I was in the market for a new laptop and I found two of equal spec and similar price and one was a Dell that good experience would undoubtedly sway me.

Heh, then imagine this:

I rarely ever use it today but my newest whole (still working) laptop is a 2006 Acer Aspire 9502 Pentium 740. A few years back I used an ATA133 adapter to swap in an SSD and put Win7 on it, runs surprisingly well for single tasks.

Even so that boat anchor is big and heavy, I'd be more likely to take a bluetooth keyboard with me along with a tablet if I had to type a lot on the go.

Lenovo G560, purchased 2010. Upgrades over the past 12 years: i7-640, 8gb ram, ssd, AC wifi with bluetooth (required a cracked bios), 90w psu, W10. Wore out the keyboard, replaced it, still have another spare. Cheap, reliable, has numeric keypad, use it for my business accounting, and as my primary computer.
