I don't really hate them, but you gotta toss out that click bait chum. Heehee

But sometimes they really do annoy me. Not often fortunately. I guess part of my disdain comes from the fact that for years I thought they were owls, in which case I loved their call.

But they're NOT owls are they? Oh no. They just like f'ing with nubes like moi who've never heard any live owls.

Little f'ers. That's what they are.

Oh my, this is quite good. I couldn't hear the third sound. I think my hearing falls off pretty sharply around 500hz-1khz and I'm pretty sure I've never heard the second (just not because of hearing loss).

I know that must sound really awful since young folks can hear up to 20khz or beyond. But oddly enough it's ALMOST enough to get by on.

that's a pretty weak rant.

I like mourning doves. I use to have 3 or 4 of them show up in my flower bed back in the day looking for seeds. They were interesting to watch. The male(s) were always trying to get with the females even though they weren't interested.

I only see pairs. They match up for life. If you see an odd number, something unfortunate has happened.

Same with Cardinals. Always in pairs. I usually have 8-10 pairs around the feeders in Winter when I feed more heavily.

I thought they were owls for the longest time. They also make the weirdest sound when they are landing. I much prefer the quail that are more prevalent this year.

I confess and gladly. Yes, I hate Mourning Doves.

I grew up in Los Angeles and they were there. It's their cooing, particularly in the early morning. It gets annoying.

I left Los Angeles in my late 20's, never to return except for brief visits. I'm now in the Bay Area, and I don't recall them here EXCEPT THE LAST FEW YEARS! My theory is that global warming has expanded their habitat to include this area. It's warmer here than it used to be. Now, I have not noticed that annoying cooing recently. Last year or two, I guess, I certainly did. Maybe they aren't common here and you only hear them if they (one or two?) establish a presence near you. It's a theory. I don't expect that very distinctive cooing pattern not to return.

Edit: OK, I'd only read the OP when I posted the above. Scrolling down a bit I found the 2:24 video on their calls. It's Sound #1, you might think it's cool or something but when you've heard it 1000 times you might not. Or 5000 times, definitely not. And it never varies. They just hang out and keep doing it, seems as though for birds they are extremely sedentary. The Sound #1 cooing is continuous, quite monotonous and worst of all, distracting.

Just call me angel of the mourning, angel
Just touch my cheek before you leave me, baby
Just call me angel of the mourning, angel
Then slowly turn away
I won't beg you to stay with me

I listen to 60's music too. Heck, I pulled out my Little Richard album yesterday, the 17 Original Hits. A caller told me there's a new documentary about Little Richard. I figure it must be great.
Some 60s is fine. But I'm an 80s kid, so it sounds a little bit dated to me.

Yeah, I always felt that way about 50's music except the rock and roll. For instance, I never dug Frank Sinatra. But I kinda by accident came into a CD of his greatest recordings, also his personal favorite album (Only the Lonely) during the pandemic and I was blown away. Couldn't stop listening to them.

I just like the coo. So placid and alien. Makes up for my lack of owls.
As a kid, I didn't know WTF that sound was. so we called it the "Thanksgiving ghost". As it was that time of year.

I get doves at my feeder every day - but they're too big to perch. They just chill on the ground below and wait for sloppy seconds.
