I enjoyed SC more for its single player I think, multiplayer was neat but other games stole me away while I would still fire up SC for some single player every now and then (I love to do stuff like play the mission where Kerrigan is captured only play it where I can actually setup a base where I can clearly and quite easily repel the attack - never losing a single unit).

TBH (and I know I'm coming from a bias viewpoint here), I think SC is the most balanced RTS to this day. Perfect in every way, except may more waypoint controls. I still play it to this day since the first day it came out (of course it was on and off during the years). But nowdays... SC + hamachi (virtual lan) + WGC maps = funfunfun.

I truly loved that game though, me and my friends would play it for hours upon hours, us vs each other, as well as coop versus AI players.
The AI was truly amazing for it's day as well, probably the first game where I actually enjoyed playing against the computer.

And yeah, if there ever was a truly balanced game, but still with significantly different races, StarCraft was it, everything else was just either blatantly unbalanced, or had 2 sides that were the same but with different color units.

I never liked the resource limiters in Warcraft 3... that really detracted from the game for me.

I've never played it...

I plan on it though! I'm backtracking right now, playing a ton of great games.

Working on GTA: Vice City at the moment...

Although I've never been into RTS too much. The last one I played was Star Wars: Gattaclic Battlegrounds. At least I think that is what it was called. The one where you can have Jedis fighting amongst your units.

funny this topic should come up--a friend of mine just got starcraft BW installed to the network drive in our engineering computer lab. We haven't gotten LAN games working yet in there, but i had some fun "study breaks" last week

Starcraft needs an graphical and control update imo

Yes some people hate it, I personally hate this game with a passion, its one of the worst RTS's I have ever played. I love RTS games, Warcraft 1,2 and 3 I played a ton, all the C&C games, both the Myth games, and plenty more.

I guess the reason I hate it so much is because so many people like the OP claim its the best RTS ever, when its only medicore at best. In all honesty I didn't hate playing it, but it wasn't really fun, and is so ridiculously overrated its not even funny. At the time SC was out I believe I was playing Myth 1 quite a bit actually, which I feel is a far superior RTS.

So anyway, SC was the most overrated garbage RTS ever made, and it doesn't even rank as the best RTS from Blizzard. Warcraft is better than SC could ever hope to be. ANyway I absolutely HATE this game, so yeah there are people who hate it.

VashHT can go first, hes passionate about his hate . Vash i believe you dont like it because you didnt try UMS on battle.net. As the worlds number 1 biggest starcraft fan i do have to admit, i never completed the campaigns without "there is no cow level" cheat. It was boring, like AOE II, and like earth 2150, i cheated through those too. Ive not played a proper game of sc in years. WWII DIE, the thing, the phantom and the other horde of UMS maps that warcraft dosent have that are a ton o fun are what makes sc great imo.

We're just passionate Rightly so too, because when i look back at 11 year old me sitting in my grans living room reading the sc manual, reading about the battlecruiser thinking "gawd damnit why dosent gran have a pc here :frown:" and how it only cost me £30? It took so little, and gave so much, sc is the absolute best buy ive ever made. £30 for thousands of hours of amusement!

In fact i actually got RSI when i was 11 because of SC. It was THAT good!

Well, I'm not sure what UMS stands for, but I actually enjoyed playing custom games on bnet better than regular the regular game. I played quite a bit of elements rpg, and the blood type maps. Anyway, I never really enoyed the regular game itself, and personally I don't feel that custom games can completely make up for the fault of the real game. In warcraft 3 I played so many ranked matches, and also tons of custom games, it was fun all around. In SC I only had fun in custom games, and even that was short lived.

Those who didn't expand in BGH would have been totally out resourced by those who did expand. It just allowed you to mass and mass more units at a greater rate than them.

But I completely agree that SC had the best race balance out of any game I've ever seen.

my take is if you are as good as you think you are, you shouldn't have a problem with fast money maps. I find that those who don't like money maps aren't really good at them, so that's something they should improve on. Sure it's easier for noobs to play them but if you are a true master, you should be able to handle them quite nicely.

BGH is a great map, especially with team play. You'll need to expand to get the advantage.

I dislike it because it's not longer about strategy. It's about speed. Even on micro maps, the winner is the one Asian kid who can press hotkeys about 100 times a second and has perfect coordination.

My view of a strategy game is one where I can actually take a minute to peruse my scout's reports and look for weak points from which to attack. Not one where I have to sit stiff in my chair with 3/4 of my brain focused on pressing keys a million times a minute.

Rise of Nations owns it by a lot. I HATE focus fire. A lot of battles in SC come down to just killing your opponent's troops from most powerful to least by focusing your fire on all of his troops in that order. In RON, you can do this for larger objects like siege engines or buildings, but focusing your entire army on one foot unit is practically worthless.

i watched a friend play WoW one time and he had like every key mapped and memorized for every ability and he was just insane. he was so fast.

no wonder i suck at some of these games. i don't have the patience to learn that well. i have to look at my bars and i use the mouse to click. there's no way i can compete against a guy who can use a new ability every second while i'm lucky to use one every few seconds.

Yes, but a good game will have mechanics that balance it out.

Old, simple example: Chess. You can move as fast as you like, but it won't make a difference in the long run.

RON also has this to a degree. It's nice to know the hot-keys, but there are only a few you really need to know to play well in multiplayer, and micro is practically eliminated. The units are smart enough choose their own targets wisely, (ie: a Javilineer will target an archer over a hoplite because they're more powerful against archers). The only micro that takes place is when you have a small scouting force.

Well, of course all maps were about expanding, to varying degrees, BGH included
Thing is, I thought the original map(Hunters wasn't it?) was fine, a tad small for my tastes, I just tended to prefer larger maps overall for a more "epic" feeling.
BGH just ruined Hunters due to the ridiculous amounts of resources available at each spot IMO.

My friends and I have had Starcraft Sunday for years now. I can't play with random people because I'm not all that good, but it's still a great game. All three races play differently and are perfectly balanced. You have enough units that you can defend a few positions (unlike WC3) but not so many that it's a giant, formless mass of units fighting another one (unlike SupComm). It's definitely the best RTS game I've ever played.
