Who hates WinME as much as me?

I bought one of those WinME promotional upgrades a while back, and installed it. Compared to 98, it just plain sucks. It takes up more space and is slower. I could have used that $50 to get a good game or something else worth buying.

I just want to know if anyone else prefers 98 to ME besides myself.

There's only one good thing about WinME: It boots unbelievable fast (which is very good if you ignore the fact that it crashes more often now at bootup )

Further it honors its name: Windows 98 Moron Edition.

Hmmmm, went from 95B to ME, I havent noticed that it's slower or less stable. The system was stable with 95B... Love the fast boot and shutdown, like that it has way more drivers built in. With 30GB drives at $99, I can afford the bloat. I'm sure that given more time I'll find something to hate about it.

Everybody seems to hate it for some reason.
Although I have to say Win2k is pretty cool (stable as a rock)

Just understand, MS is selling OS's to morons, and they have to make it as simple as possible. They probobly tell everyone that the "Crashes" are really saftey "features". Anywho, It seems more stable to me then 9x, but I would have to say, I prefer 2k. But try and get a redneck to understand 2k, yeah right.

If you go to college in Wisconsin you can get windows2k through college for $25.
I hate ME, it seems to bsod about every 3 times or so on boot up. I wish I knew if it was ME or something I screwed up.

I didn't like it either. Too much bloat, sound was always screwing up, etc. Went back to my nice stable 98SE.

i've been dual booting me/2k for about 6 months now (picked up me before it's release)

at first, it was a pain to get the two working together...but after working with my mobo and other parts of my comp and getting drivers for the respective OS' it became great.

i love me and 2k now. me for quick boot and games, 2k for rock stability and everything else

I had problems with ME when I installed it over 98SE, but when I did a clean install all the problems cleared up. I think ME is better than 98 myself. Just like anything else Microsoft puts out people love to bash it but look at the sales figures...... As for win2k, it is better in a business environment but is not well suited to home use (games/surfing etc) which is why there are so many posts on this forum from people who can't get software working in 2k.

The majority of folks who have a lot of problems with windows ME probably did not take the time to format and clean install.

I'm running Windows Me & Windows 2000 Pro here. Havn't had any problems with Me. I bought the Windows Me " upgrade verson " and " clean installed " it. I wonder what the diffrence is between the " upgrade " and the "promotional upgrade " versions are ? Maybe that's why so many have trouble with Me ? Don't know for sure here though. I learned a while back not to load an upgrade version of MS OS's over currently installed OS as I always had trouble afterwards. I must say, that Windows 2000 Pro with the service 1 pack included has been extremly stable for me and with that OS love not having to reboot as often as I do with the ( former ) 98SE and ( current ) Me

Metalmadman: The upgrade version will work with any version of windows previously installed (or if you have any old windows installation media then you can do a full install from the upgrade cd). The promotional upgrade however, only upgrades (or installs after verifying media of) Windows 98 or higher. I doubt many are upgrading from 3.1 to Me, so it's safe to say that the promotional upgrade is basically for Win98 users and the upgrade is basically for Win95 users.

Ok, knew that and have clean installed several times with Win98 / 98SE and Win Me. Now the promotional upgrade version is what I did not know, but I was suspecting it was a load over previous windows type of version of Windows Me. Of coarse the &quot; upgrade version &quot; is around $80.00 and can be clean installed with the verification. I'm wondering now how many people here that have had problems with Me used the promotional upgrade version since it retails at around $50.00. I cannot relate to those here having problems with Windows Me as I've installed it several times on diffrent computers with no problems at all. I'm now thinking that many of those that have had problems were using the &quot; promotional upgrade &quot; version and installed over thier Win98 or 98SE ... probably not though but I am intrested to see what &quot; type &quot; of Windows Me others are using when they install thier Win Me.

I have been using Me and it is working fine here.

For those that bought the upgrade version then I suggest that you do a &quot;clean&quot; upgrade.

In other words, install the upgrade Me without any OS like 95 and 98Se.

When the upgrade cannot find a version of Windows 95 or 98, it would ask you to put in the Windows 95 or 98 floppy disks or cdrom.

Hopefully, that should fix most problems from upgrading directly from 95 or 98 to Me.

Stop picking on ME!!! I get good job security from it, when the Customer has me &quot;tweak it&quot; to get it running correctly. DOS/3.1/3.11/NT 3.51/Win95/Win98/Nt 4.0/W2K and ME can be made stable, you just need a little hard work and some information(and downloads of course), providing that the Hardware is compatiable. Hmmm, come to think of it, never had that problem with 98! LOL.

Perce is Correct Me works very well if you take the time to do the tweaks on it like completely removing and disabling pchealth/restore. Those 2 features caused me more problems than anyting i have ever seen i a MS OS before. Metalmadman's school most likely has a partnership with Microsoft (talk about selling your soul to the devil). Lot's of other schools have similar deals. I'm at Penn State and most of Microsoft products are free to students (including Win2k and WinMe). You check out the CD-ROMs like checking out books at the library.

If ya get 'em hooked on it when they're young...

I've had no problems with ME. I did try to install it over 98, what a mess that was. After a format C: and clean install it has been fine. Much less to download to get it up to date, and the system restore has saved me from two headaches.

Don't go to any school here. Never went to college. Just a working man,married with three kids here. All my experiance with the OS's mentioned here have been on my systems at home. FYI.

Now as for Windows Me, I've read quite a few posts about how bloated Windows Me is, and from my use of it, it doesn't have any more bloat to it than 98 / 98SE IMO. As mentioned above Win Me does need to be tweaked a bit and just a bit of a learning curve to it but at least this upgrade version ( not the promotional upgrade ) has run just as well as 98SE ever did for me in the past.
