I also have had NO problems with installing Windows ME over Win98 SE. I had a very sick Win98 SE and it was a pile of junk after the Pacbell kid techs screwed it up failing to install DSL.

Installing ME over that sick 98 SE came out unbelievably perfect as it cured every single problem I was having with that computer. Even made my scanner work again.

Sounds like a lot of sheep are on this forum. One says they do not like ME and the rest of the sheep chime in for no good reason to agree.

Windows 2000 rulez!

Though, I must admit W98SE wasn't that bad...

WinMe does 2 additional things that takes up space. It places a copy of the OS under windows/options/install (the whole OS which is retarded) and creates a restore folder which grows like a u know what? Disable system restore to control it (go to device manager and find it) - thats about 200mb off your HD right there.

when you say it places the os in windows\options\install, do you just mean the cab files (don't have me installed right now so i can't check)? If its just the cabs, that's not really retarded. That way you don't have to have the windows cd when you install something that requires files off of it, it's all in that directory.

I did a clean install on my son's PC, k6/2-450, soyo5EHM, Geforce SDR, AWE64, NIC, 256MB ram, his SE install was corrupt. It has run PERFECTLY for a month now, not a SINGLE crash. So far, I'm actually impressed with my first experience.

Not on your life will I USE WIN ME AGAIN, I installed it 6 different times, didn't matter, upgrade, clean install, I ALWAYS got explorer crashes and yes I did all the recent patches. I use Win2k right now all the time but am building a 2nd box exclusively for games, going to install Win98 SE on that box, but only gonna run it to play games, so stability isn't a big issue, but Win98 NEVER had the problems of ME.

I hate it very much so. I stuck with 95 as long as I could, until Photoshop 6 wouldn't run on it. Every since I installed a clean version of ME on my computer, I get mysterious iexplore.exe has caused a pagefault in kernal32.dll error messages. This happens about half the time when I close IE. The error message keeps on popping up even though the program has already been closed. MS said to update to the latest patches, it still does it. I am so tempted to wipe it off again and throw on NT 4 or if anyone knows where I can get W2k pro, at a decent price this would be cool. I am a student, but the school where I go has it for about the same price as I can get an OEM version.

ME is great for new builds with ALL new software and periphs.-Great for customer restore (make sure you sell em 20g+ drives). My pref is SE as HP still doesn't have drivers for my $500. 1120c large format printer. Guess they want me buy the 1220cxi. (Kiss this).
These vendors just keep working us!!

WinMe sucks big time.
Now I started to use Win2000 instead.
I had 256 mb ram with WinMe and my computer was still slow.
Let's see what happens with 2k.

Have machines running ME, and 2k. Don't understand why some people have so much trouble with ME. I've been running it for about a month and haven't had any problems at all. Still I prefer the power of 2000 for most things, but ME doesn't seem to be so bad, at least not for me. Maybe many of these problems are coming for users that did an upgrade instead of clean install

TGI,

We all can have differing experiences with the same OS depending on our hardware and software. In my case installing Win ME over a sick Win98 SE my results were a perfect running computer and it is faster than my one computer with Win98 SE still installed on it.

I use two hard drives. One is for a backup. I use PowerQuest's DriveCopy 3.0 for backing up my hard drives. So I had no reason to let WinME installation save the old Win98SE as a backup as some seem to have done. Then they complain about the old backed up Win using up a lot of hard drive space. To fix that go in and tell Win ME to delete the old Windows backup as it is no longer needed. That frees up all the space the backup OS was using.

Instead of doing that the perpetual complainers just keep on complaining as if their brains suddenly went blank. (I used "blank" in place of my preferred word)

I had pretty decent system.
256mb ram, pIII 450, hard drive controller ultra ata 100 and 2 hard drives ,both 7200 rpm and had 80% free space, scsi cd-rom and cdw.
It was clean install of WinMe and I was having problems about my speed and it was keep crashing.I don't even remember how many times I had seen blue screen with WinMe.
Especially annoying futures that I absolutely didn't need.-Eventhough you can eleminate some of them during installation- and massive security problems with Windows Media Player and Outlook Express.
these were enough reasons to get rid of that o/s .However I admit ,it's totaly personal choice.I respect everyones choices and I know it's not cheap to change o/s.
I don't tell anyone to change their o/s I'm just saying allmost same money you can better o/s -either microsoft or any other-,depends on what you want to do.
I only liked one future of WinMe ,which is "System Restore".
People who says they like their WinMe ,please tell me why you like it then?

TGI,

Funny thing is I have not had a single BSOD since I first installed Win ME over a sick Win98 SE. I bought the Win ME upgrade version for $48.60 second day it was released.

As for security problems? How? I have a firewall and set my security levels for IE and OE 5.5 as recommended by the free updates and free security updates for Win ME that is available for FREE if you will click on "Windows Update" that is located in the Start menu list.

For Media Player 7 - MP7 - there is an update for it and once you install that update MP7 is super stable and works great. Again it was a failure of the owner of the computer to download the free update. To bad. I am listening to great classical music right now as I type this. It is an FM radio station located in the UK. I am listenting to it with my earphones, not through my external amplified speakers. It is so clear one would think I was listening to a local FM radio station. Quality is excellent. MP7 is an excellent program.

In MP7 click on its Help menu and then select the "Check For Player Updates" item. It will auto run your browser and check for updates. You select the updates you want on-screen then download them. Easy stuph.

>>>However I admit ,it's totaly personal choice.I respect everyones choices and I know it's not cheap to change o/s. <<<

Well, you did what worked best for you. Congratulations!

I have had pretty good luck with ME. It seems very fast, boots quick, and hardly ever crashes, less I would say than 98 or 95. Most of the problems that have surfaced seem due to programs released before ME that don't run correctly, though I have found that the majority do.

Windows ME (promotional edition) is the buggiest piece of S/W I've ever bought. I can't shut down my computer. About half of the time, I get the blue screen of death. Some day I may get around to doing a clean install, but I'm not expecting much. Thank goodness for Drive Image!

I haven't had too many problems w/it. I purchased a Dell last week and after blowing away all the extra crap, installing current drivers, and doing the Windows update, it's not so bad...

Run both my systems at home on WinMe with no problems.....the trick is to do a clean install after a format....had trouble on one upgrade install from 98se...formatted and clean installed and .....wow..no problems at all...all my pci drivers were installed automatically ..except for my Elsa Gladiac...even my onboard Abit ata controllers were recognized by winme...quite stable as well...share a cable modem and printer and am a avid gamer..not a bad option for the money...

As you can tell from my previous notes I had a perfect great experience install the WinME update over a very sick Win98 SE computer.

For me, WinME is very stable, does not crash, runs very fast and boots up faster then SE does. Looks like many of us have varying degrees of success in upgrading to Windows ME. Far as I can tell, my experience, FDISKing and or reformatting your hard drive before installing ME is a waste of your time.

Well, if you are a big time gamer :disgust: then that is an entirely different story.
