I am currently going to a CC, about to transfer to U of A. I started CC at 15, so I went to the CC as suposed to the U, largely because it's a much better fit for a 15 year old. I am fortunate in that Pima CC and U of A work very closely together, to the transfer is easy. Also, I've save like 3.5K a semester. I'd say it is definitly worth it.

The other thing about CC's is that they really are somewhere between a Highschool and a University. You can't truly dick around and pass, as you can in highschool, but the academic rigor isn't what it is at a university. In my experience, the instructor quality is just as mixxed a bag as anywhere.

thats definately not true...some ppl at my school graduated at top of their class and went to CC (surprised no scholarships)

Actually going to CC imho is something a lot of smart people do to save some money.

Make sure to talk to a counselor at the school about what the transfer options(make sure to take classes that will transfer!!!) to whatever university you would like to attend when you finish.

cc teachers vary from slightly retarded to decent. luck of the draw really. you really teach yourself by reading the textbooks. its a bit like high school without the police state aspect.

1. If you are going to a local CC, you may be tempted to live at home with your parents and hang out with friends from high school who are still in your area. This will stunt your emotional growth to some degree.
2. In a similar vein, the CC schedule may be very close to what you have with high school. There may not be enough of a difference for you to work harder. When you get to the university level, things will move very fast.

So basically: CC life may be very similar to what you have in high school. Don't slack!
As someone who has attended a major university, a local community college, and lived both at home and on my own, this post is complete BS. OP: Ignore this.

Anyway,
You'll love CC. The teachers are generally much more friendly than profs at university, and you'll have more opportunities to ask questions.

If I can suggest anything, it's to hone your studying skills while you're at your CC. If you're not sure how to do well, go to the free tutoring service which they all (or most?) have. Learn how to study, and you'll be set.

Thats a very untrue statement about CC instructors.

Yeah there are alot of CCs that dont have qualified instructors, but there are some that have instructors that love to teach and not do research.

I personally now several CC teachers that are probably without a doubt above four year university profs, especially those more concerned about research than teaching.

Personally, compared to EE classes at my university, they were a complete joke. I really don't understand how some people were failing tests in those classes, pretty much all they require is going to class, and taking notes when the professor says something multiple times (like, duh!) Maybe reading a chapter a week. I'd check with the universities you want to go to on your classes, go to CC, make a 4.0 (not that hard to do, if you keep up with reading/go to class/pay attention), then transfer after a year, maybe 2.

Most general ed classes are a complete joke. Anywhere, not just at CCs. That said I saw plenty of A&M students fail classes at Blinn. About half of the Bryan students are co-enrolled with A&M.

Also OChem I and II are harder at Blinn than A&M. Ive heard of that course chewing A&M students up quite often.

After 2 years i plan on transferring either to UNC Chapel Hill, or NC State. I wanted to know who here has been to community college and has transfered into a 4 year college and is successful in life as in Jobs etc ? And especially how was the experience, the comm college in Charlotte is in the top 5 for comm colleges, CPCC's education is better than some colleges.
thanks !

It seriously isnt going to hurt your prospects later down the road. There are plenty of successful people that started at a JuCo.

Im not done with undergrad yet, but I did well enough to get a full ride at Texas Tech. You'll also have every oppurtunity that a non transfer student would have. I'm going to Spain this summer for study aborad. TTU has a campus/center there. Ive known other transfer students that were selected for TTU's Congressional Internship Program, which is extremely competitive, I just dont have time left for it.

I took 1 year at CC, In May I will have my BS in Electrical Engineering.

At CC the classes are easier, and the workload is easier to manage. Make good grades at CC your GPA will look great when you finish your degree.

My school (Texas A&M) didn't allow grades from other universities to be figured into your GPA. The classes appeared on your transcript but no grades even. A lot of people liked that cause they didn't worry about making a B/C when taking summer school classes at a different university. I didn't though, I needed A's so as to not raise the eyebrows of a graduate school.

I'm sure a lot of other schools are the same. I also didn't get GPA points for AP credits, boohoo for me, I had friends that went into UT-Austin with 40 hrs worth of A's before they even started! But I think that policy might have changed since then.

As long as its a C it doesnt matter is the common mentallity of most A&M-Blinn students.

i averaged my CC grades with my university grades on resumes, so in that aspect it actually helped me out

the bad part is you will either lose 2 years of the "university experience", or, if you stay in uni for longer, then you lose out on the "lost years" at CC

whats untrue about what i said? i said what you said but the simple fact is as a whole i'm sure the quality varies far more than with better institutions of obvious reasons.

I got into some good schools out of high school but ended up going to a CC and transferred to UCSD. It doesn't make a difference once you get to the 4-year. Actually, I saw a statistic once that showed that students who transfer from CC's generally do better at the 4-years than students who went directly from high school. Also, don't be surprised if your best teachers/professors are the ones at the CC.

Just do some research into transfer agreements with other schools and make sure it's know that is your course of action to your advisor.

I'm attending CC in Moorpark, CA, and almost all of my professors teach at various CSU and UC Universities using the same exact course outline. Why pay University tuition when you get the same damn course at a CC for $30 a unit?

Umm... that's ALL colleges, if any of that is remotely true. It's just that universities have more money to spend on needless rennovations, egotistical faculty and crap art to make the campus less like a concrete jungle.

90% of college is teaching yourself from the book and homework. The other 10% is the crap that professors tell you is true because it's their personal belief, but not written in any book.

CC is great if you're working. They were understanding of my schedule and I didn't get the completely nutso professors with weird ideas of how the world should be. Unfortunately there is no four year school near me after Katrina.

CC is not bad, just make sure that your credits will transfer.

I took some summer courses

I think CC are fine for gec's that you want to get out of the way

from what I found though, the calc and physics classes are much much easier than what you'd find in a university setting.

I did/do, saved lots and lots of money and it let me work a lot too.

we have this thing called the mntc curriculum, which means you can go to CC for 2 years and transfer to the U of M without and issues (assuming you follow its guidelines)

Class sizes are much smaller at CCs. This is a huge benefit along with the lower costs.
