not always true. The courses I took at CC were harder than the same courses I am teaching here at Umich...

I am about to graduate in june from High school, and currently have not been accepted into any college =(
Next year i am probably going to go to Community College (Central Piedmont Community College,Charlotte,NC)
After 2 years i plan on transferring either to UNC Chapel Hill, or NC State. I wanted to know who here has been to community college and has transfered into a 4 year college and is successful in life as in Jobs etc ? And especially how was the experience, the comm college in Charlotte is in the top 5 for comm colleges, CPCC's education is better than some colleges.
thanks !

UPDATE - I am going to comm college next year and am pretty happy about it... i guess

I didn't elaborate earlier, but you've made a fine choice.

I have a few friends at CPCC, and it really is a fantastic community college. The newest campus, the Levine campus, is realllly nice.

I went to a JC in California and then transferred to University of Washington. I don't regret it at all.

I graduated from Moorpark College in 2002, and tuition was around $12 a unit at the time, but even $30 a unit is a bargain.

I did my 1st 2 years of college at a CC. The only class that didn't transfer for full credit was an orientation class. The Virginia CC system had a guidebook available that told you which classes transfered over for full credit to various Universities throughout the state.

If you have a university in mind, first check with both institutions and make sure that the credits will transfer.
Get Gen-ed courses out of the way, like arts, English, humanities, and social sciences. Maybe you can even get some math and sciences taken care of, too. It'll be much cheaper than taking them at a university, as some have suggested already.

I went to a community college for Cisco Networking, but ultimately never used that major. I eventually went into an engineering major, and a good portion of the basics, such as English and two philosophy courses, transferred. The MIS credits also transferred, but they don't do anything in terms of getting my engineering degree.

I went to Lehigh Carbon Community College in Pennsylvania, and I'm now at Penn State University.

I went for one quarter in high school. I do not think I had the depth of experience there that I did in college so I do not feel prepared to comment on it. I will say that I have met scores of folks who did a few years at community colleges who were intelligent, capable, and ultimately successful people, so don't let ignorant, insecure kids tell you otherwise.

so then I guess it's even more pertinent to touch base with university you're looking to transfer to...

do they have community college rankings?

I was sort of lazy about applying for colleges when I graduated high school. I had already been taking some classes at the CC so I stayed there for another year and got more gen. ed. out of the way. Then I transfered to RHIT, one of the top engineering universities in the country. I will be graduating in two weeks and going to RIT (Rochester) to get a masters.

So yes, good universities will accept transfers from community colleges. Although I might add that RHIT is very small and pretty flexible with its students. You might not be able to get into MIT or Caltech very easily.

I got an associates at a local community college before going to a real university, and only had to retake one class that didn't carry over. I didn't finish university but am going back this next semester, so I'll tell ya how it turns out. In the meantime I ended up in several dead end jobs, and still currently own a computer shop that barely stays alive. Thus why I'm going back to school.

I am going to a CC right now, I like it since I have had to take a one term off so far and only went half time this term. It was good because I didn't have to pay fees or huge tuition prices like that of a university. They are flexible and the professors usually know you by first name since there aren't 400+ people in your classes.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me.

I'm a junior @ HS going to community college for dual credit so I can get my AS before the end of my senior year. If you were successful in HS or currently are, and you know your planned major, go for it. The teachers can range from great to downright awful at teaching. Use www.ratemyprofessor.com to help choose, but sometimes you have to get the bad ones because they're the only ones that fit your schedule. People there are more intelligent than HS, and it's a more mature environment (I prefer this over HS anyday). No one is planning to beat someone else up or anything. No one is going to be a douche behind your back or in your face (unless you did something really bad to them). Since they pay for their tuition there instead of getting it free at high school, they have to learn respect and a have good work habits.

If you have good study habits from high school, you can excel beyond the other students like you did when you were in high school.

Good point! While in my community college, there was a high school senior in my Calc 3, multi-variable calculus, class. After graduation from high school, he went on to MIT with an excellent preparation.
