If you have a university in mind, first check with both institutions and make sure that the credits will transfer.
Get Gen-ed courses out of the way, like arts, English, humanities, and social sciences. Maybe you can even get some math and sciences taken care of, too. It'll be much cheaper than taking them at a university, as some have suggested already.
I went to a community college for Cisco Networking, but ultimately never used that major. I eventually went into an engineering major, and a good portion of the basics, such as English and two philosophy courses, transferred. The MIS credits also transferred, but they don't do anything in terms of getting my engineering degree.
I went to Lehigh Carbon Community College in Pennsylvania, and I'm now at Penn State University.
