Lots of it.

Def. start with therapy. Imho, medications for social (or general) anxiety do help, but shouldn't be relied upon long-term unless your condition is that debilitating. You also do have to test yourself by going outside your comfort zone every once in a while. It doesn't have to be extreme, but small doses every once in a while do help to keep you from living under a rock permanently. It is a daily battle though.

tell us more, when did it start, how does it manifest, etc

I'm 17 and have had it my entire life. I am not a super-shy guy either. I was never the super shy kid in every class at school.

I get so much anxiety in every situation its unbearable....thinking about everything from what words im using and everything. its terrible just overconcerned about what others think of you.

I have that problem sometimes. Don't sweat what people think though.

i know tard, but that feel good feeling of not having anxiety from alcohol might lead to drinking all the time.

About medications, specifically SSRI's....will its effects wear off if you stop using it? or does it help permanently correct the chemicals in the brain?

try something like buspar first. it works the same way but it's a little different and i like it much better.

I'm on both for social anxiety. I don't notice much in the way of side effects from either. However they haven't helped me all that much either.

I remember a stand up comedian talking about the sexual side effects he got from Paxil being "I'm always horny and it takes me forever to cum, yeah you know the girls hate that". Basically that's the only side effect I've had, you know they are looking at SSRIs as a treatment for ED? As for weight gain? I don't know I was already a fatty so....

But I'm thinking of going off them since I'm not getting a huge benefit from them. I've tried both Paxil and Celexa and am currently on Celexa and Buspar. I definitely noticed a reduction of my most serious depressive episodes which is a + but I still have most of my other social anxiety and other issues. Drinking is also a problem for me

I was like that. Then I got laid.

Seriously, no trolling. I don't drink or do drugs. I just changed my lifestyle. More exercise and knowing the things I did in the past that made things seem awkward or embarrassing. For this, you may just have to be more introspective and then be with someone you like spending some intimate time with.

yeah dude i hated paxil, never could finish with a girl with it. and i have heard about SSRIs being used as a treatment for ED. i stopped paxil a few weeks ago and the withdrawals have been not too terrible, just little brain shocks every once in a while and the sexual stuff is starting to finally go away :fap;

Did any of overcome it with sheer willpower?

Dont need to do it from willpower. Untill you get in better schooling to teach you how to deal with it better, I found that 5-10mg of sleeping aid is enough to relax without feeling drowsy and without resorting to some strong drug. Usually sleeping aids come in 25mg forms.

Oh yeah and pussy/booze help too.

No you dont grow out of it unless you do something to make it easier.

I wouldn't say you grow out of it, but it does get better as you get older. The older you get, the less you worry about what other people think of you.

But if it's having a negative effect on your life, you should get therapy and try to work on it. You really don't want to wait until you're 30 to get over it.

You shouldn't let yourself worry that much about what people might be thinking about you. Just remember that most people are retarded and not worth worrying about. Do your own thing, be yourself, and anyone that doesn't like it can f_ck off.

all this talk about just forgetting about what people think, etc. when you have true social anxiety is much easier said than done.

Lexapro works for a lot of people. I used it for years but i had a weird reaction - it made me kinda too popular.. I always wanted to drink and party and have people around. Now I don't take lexapro and basically am a misanthrope, but it's ok since i'm married.

So this is the one disease it's ok to diagnose and suggest treatment for over the internets? Or maybe he should continue to go to the professionals that can actually have a chance to help.

Yeah. lol @ at the people telling him what scrips to try, or telling this 17 year old kid to get boozed up. That's not going to help. Go to your doctor and listen to his advice.

That's OK , except he needs to be proactive about it. I would ask about therapy as an option. It may be covered by his parent's insurance and it would be worth a try before trying any prescriptions.
