Who here is using google voice?

Just got an android phone and im playing around with google voice. Has anyone essentially stopped using their old cellphone number and has essentially be just using their google voice number with the google services?

Seems like google voice can allow you to call out as the GV #, sent texts as the GV# and manage voicemails. Is there any disadvantage this?

Google can track who you talk to, and turn it over to the government if asked. I still use it though. I only use prepaid cell phones, so having a stable number makes it easy to ditch phones.

Same as a carrier. I trust google to protect me more than any carrier.

I use it for free texts. I don't have texting plan. I also use it for international calls. It's 2 cents a minute to international places I call. It's also the number I give to everyone. It has call screening and individual number block so I can ban and block number with ease. I don't use the voicemail feature since that relies on data connection. If you're in an area with spotty data coverage, your voicemail can get delayed. I use my carrier voicemail and free visual voicemail instead of Google Voice.

I don't know that carriers keep transcripts of all your texts, and voice messages. Maybe they do, but I find the whole concept bothersome. I don't have the money for my own telecom, so I gotta deal with what I've got.

I use Google voice as a replacement for my landline using this. Works great for the most part, and free calling has been extended to the end of 2012, so another year of free phone service. Really can't complain about that.

If you get Obihai device, you can get rid of your home landline and just use Google Voice with your regular home phone for free phone service.

somewhat

they'll see calls to the GV number, but I don't think there is much else they can "legally" snoop on or see.

I ported my cell number to gv and cancelled my phone plan.

Have it forward to my work cell
