skywhr, sounds like you know your stuff.
I was a USMC Marksmanship instructor and shot on/coached shot on many winnning rifle and pistol teams. not to blow my own horn but just to say I know what I'm talking about.
Try out as many pistols as you can. Everybody's hands and bodies are different, I carry a full size Kimber but want a HK USP compact .40. for me it has been the most naturally pointing gun ever.
Keep weight very high on your list of criteria. What feels good for a few minutes will start to hurt after hours of wear. also consider how to carry it while driving. Most holsters do not sit comfortably in the car. Spend the money you need to on a good holster probably over $75-100.
as for carry permits, that depends on your state and possibly local county. read everything carefully. carrying a weapon is serious, often you have to take crap from people or just walk away from situations that you could respond to if you weren't armed. It's the price you pay.
good luck. feel free to email me.

I carry Hydroshock bullets? 2 clips 1 in the chamber. The holster I have doesn't sit well when I sit in the car or in general which sucks.

Quite a variety of useful hardware. Now how many of you folks are also National Rifle Association members? Without the NRA the Second Amendment would be a distant memory.

Amish,
go to Pro Arms on Redwood road
they have a decent indoor shooting range

I go there once in a while and do some target practice.

Or you could head south to Lehi and head out by Utah Lake and beat the bush for some cute little bunnies.

lol @ Russ
I know I have 2 "things" in common with Russ, but I won't spoil his fun.

RGN,

Yeah, I'm five-O... Actually, I'm a honorary/part-time deputy. I work a little when someone's one vacation, when they're severely understaffed, when there's a big emergency, or to occasionally serve warrants when noone else feels like doing it. I don't get paid much, but then again, my duties are never really that dangerous. But I do have a badge, and a cool blue light for my car (it looks neat when I've got the blue light running in my black 300ZX TT, I get the funniest looks)... not to mention a nifty jacket that says deputy on it as well as some t-shirts (on the back of two of them is printed "whacha gonna do when I come for you?".

Cool story. I was on my way home one evening when I saw this joker blow through a red light doing 60-70mph in a red Chevy pickup, almost nailing this lady in a Cavalier. Well, it really torqued me off so planted the blue light and went into pursuit. I called in for approval and backup (which I got, and BU was sent). I quickly caught up with the guy and he immediately pulled over. I called saying I'd apprehended and relayed tag numbers. Anyway, I got out of the ZX and walked over to his door with badge in hand and with my other hand in my jacket pocket on my gun. Sure enough it was a 16 year-old kid and man was he sweating bullets.

Me: Didn't see that red light did ya?
Him: Yeah, I saw it, I just thought it would change before I got there.
Me: I need your license and your registration.
Him: Ok. <he hands said items to me>
Him: Can I ask you a question?
Me: Yeah, what is it?
Him: When did the police start driving 300ZX turbos? I was gonna run when I saw the blue light, but when I saw what you were driving I knew I didn't have a chance.
Me: Soon we'll all be driving them. And no, you won't have a chance.

Then the backup arrived and I let them take over.

I remember the first time I shot a gun. My brothers asked me along on a hunting trip so I went out and bought a gun...a single-shot 16gauge shotgun. I had never shot a gun before in my life so I took it out back to shoot at some cans to see what it was like. Not knowing what I was doing, I raised the barrel, took careful aim at the empty Bud can, and fired. Why, oh why, didn't anybody ever tell me that when firing a shotgun you should always hold the butt of the gun tight against your shoulder. I had about a 5 inch gap between the gun and my shoulder when I fired. Damn thing knocked me on my @ss, and left my shoulder black and blue for 2 weeks!

...but I still went hunting! Anybody wanna hear of the trials and tribulations of 3 first time hunters trying to figure out how to gut a deer?

Why is that when the topic of guns comes up, people feel the need to chime in, "Not me". Didn't anyone ask that? Always confuses me.

Personally, I'm committed to amassing an arsenal, according to Clinton's fscking law at least. I'll pick up a couple 1000 bricks of .22LR ammo -- that should do it.

Just like gittyup, Ruger P89 9mm.
Got a 15 round mag and a castrated (thanks to Klinton) 10 rounder.

No concealed weapons permit, yet. Learning to shoot, considering going through the process. I work late, my lunch hour is 2am and my employer is a high crime target because it is a running joke throughout town that we are all "Dellionaires". It makes folks like me walking out of the building at 2am highly likely targets for someone looking to try for a quick buck by shoving a gun in my face.

See my thread here about "senses" for the other reason I am considering carrying.

If I do end up carrying, KelTec P11 would be my carry weapon of choice for a small firearm.
As a fellow 9mm, I can stick with 9mm ammo and avoid having to pay and store any other type.
You can check out this site for more info on them: Kel-Tec Owners Group

it kinda ticks me off that the term "gun" is synonomous with pistol and self defense. I have a few guns, all for hunting--not people hunting. I have a 270 Winchester, a Remington 870 12ga, and an old stevens bolt action 20ga.
