Another gradeschool cafeteria staple. Our cafeteria had the best hot dogs I've ever eaten, right up there with the best NYC street vendor dogs I've had. It was always a major disappointment any time I had a hot dog anywhere else when I was a kid.

Where I grew up, though, this is what we called pigs in a blanket - halupki (stuffed cabbage):

Pretty much ate nothing but pigs in a blanket for a few days to get them eaten up before the crescent rolls went bad.

In the UK it's not a proper Christmas roast without pigs in blankets, which are small sausages (aka cocktail sausages) wrapped in streaky bacon. Also good at any other time of the year.

I remember when the wife and I first were married in the dark ages, I mentioned crescent rolls at Thanksgiving and she made them like flat triangles thinking they rolled themselves up att.

Was kinda funny, just brought it to mind. Everything else was great, but everyone teased her a bit about the triangles

we called them Holubtsi aka cabbage rolls.

but we never covered them with tomato sauce. that was more of a Croatian thing. We used sour creme.

that was good eating.

Yep, thats them, what I think of when someone says 'pigs in a blanket". Funny though they never seemed to contain pork, only beef. Substitute green peppers for the cabbage and you have roast peppers. Mother made them both almost weekly in NE Pennsylvania. Never heard hot dogs called that until recently.

Normally I used half slices of Oscar Meyer bologna too. WAY better than a wiener slice as the edges get a little crispy. Toss in a half slice of American cheese too!

Same here. I grew up in SW Pennsylvania.

For a quick fix, I like Stouffer's frozen stuffed peppers. Very much the same ground beef and rice filling, with a similar light tomato sauce.

From NW PA here. We'd have beef and pork mixed in with rice (I think......it was long ago) wrapped in cabbage with a light tomato sauce on top. Kinda sounds like a regional thing, like pork & sauerkraut for New Years dinner

That looks amazing. Cabbage and meat is just a great combo. Us Greeks we do stuffed peppers and tomatoes mostly but we do have a stuffed cabbage dish with a lemon sauce called

wtf? no, never. Maybe in that tiny western corner of the US where this sounds reasonable to you.

regardless, I am now going with Welshbloke's definition, because:

PIAB = bacon-wrapped sausages > PIAB = flaky dough-wrapped hotdog > Donkey cum > PIAB = pancake-wrapped sausage w/ peanut butter.
