Just wondering if any of you tip at starbux. being a poor student i don't.. and it seems a little weird to for regular coffee anyways sometimes the workers are slow to get to me though, they walk around doing other things taking too long to get to the cash register. maybe its just lame employees.. i dunno

I just get my coffee and get the f out. Even on the few occasions I do stop and sit down, it's not like the refills are free or anything

THose tips do get shared among the Baristae. However, I rarely tip them. For one thing, they make pretty impressive money for non-food-prep retail selling jobs (like almost $9/hr to start). That doesn't include the free lb of coffee a month and 30% discount, either.
Add'lly, they don't do THAT much work to warrant a tip any more than you'd tip someone at McDonald's or Bruegger's (where I used to work). The person working the bar can get pretty harried, but generally the cashier and the other folks there are doing the standard upkeep stuff--keeping everything stocked and clean. If I could just tip the person on bar, I might, but it's annoying to throw $1 in the cup knowing the person on bar might get only $.20 of it.

Oh well.

You gotta be kidding me - no way am i going to tip someone when i have to walk up to the counter and wait in line. I'm a very generous tipper, but usually only in sit down restaurants. This would be like me tipping the "Hostess" at mcdonalds for a big mac. It's not gonna happen.

I always tip $1 if it is at a good Starbucks. We have the BEST staff at ours and they are always so friendly and never make sh!tty drinks.

For anyone in Honolulu, it is the Kahala one -- the evening staff rock! I live only two blocks or so away from the Manoa one, but go all the way to Kahala.

Ok, you are the people that piss me off. I work at starbucks.
You should pay us for having to put up with the kind of crap YOU the consumer give us. I want half a shot, but my milk needs to be half non-fat half organic, with a pinch of nutmeg in it, then I want 4 and a 1/3 shot of vanilla, mixed in BEFORE the milk, and no foam on it please, but maybe a bit of whipped cream on the top, not too much.

If I wasnt working, I would tell this sample customer to kiss my ass, these people make me sick.
Back to you, tip your barista, trust me.

CorporateRecreation-

Then your Starbucks sucks. Starting is 8.25 at most Starbucks.

I tip, only because I used to work at a place like that, so I understand ^_^

I worked at Starbucks for 2 years. downtown Chicago locations. We used to divide the tips, but not evenly the person on bar makes more. here's the deal. This is not mcDonald's or any fast food. If you think so try making your own dam caramel macchiatto and see how it tastes. When you get a really good drink it is worth the tip. If you're a college student or someone who looks like you can't afford it then we understand and don't expect you to tip, that's not the reason you're getting poor service. You're getting poor service because the manager is a maniacal, sadistic fvck who refuses to put enough staff on to get the job done, more staff cuts into thier paycheck and if we don't have our tasks done we can't go home.

tending bar is hard work and you depend on the other staff to help you out. It was a lot of fun and it's hard work, not to mention 75% of the clientele treat you like shi te. Tip, we really appreciate it.

agreed that the people who order obnoxiously complicated drinks should tip, they are the ones holding up the lines....not necessarily the employees.
if i was getting regular coffee though, i don't think i would tip

It slows EVERYONE down in the store. The employees have to take the extra time to meet the retarted expectations of customers.

I've kinda given up on the Starfux downtown..everytime I ask for a machiatto they look at me like I'm from another planet and it usually takes a manager to show the person which buttons to push on the register. Honolulu Coffee Company at bishop square gets all my coffee money....

Not to entirely discredit starlux though...you always no what to expect wherever you go-they seem fairly consistent to me as far as the quality of their drinks go..

I agree with that.

The problem is, most of the time, there is no time to sit down and train a new employee, so for some stupid reason the store manager will just unleash a new employee without any physical training whatsoever. So that makes us have to work even harder because this new person is basically just worthless. This is sometimes the case when someone doesnt know how to ring someone up.

WTF? Your selling a product that the consumer can get anyway they like it. If you cannot do special orders, then why offer it?

BTW, i only drink mochas from starbucks. A basic fvckin mocha. Nothing added. So don't tell me i give you guys any crap at all, because i certainly do not.

Yes, we offer it, but if you are going to order something obscene like that, you should tip the person making it. I didnt ask for your tip did I? I was using the trouble customer as an example. If you just order a mocha, make it at your house for a lot cheaper and stop complaining
I will let you in a secret, its two shots of espresso and hershey's like syrup. Mix, add milk, swallow.

CorporateRecreation:
Now that it's getting the season I'd like to pass on one of my favorite non menu drinks.

Steamed cider in an espresso for here cup
a dash of vanilla
whipped cream on top sprinkled with cinnamon

Tastes like apple pie.....

[Mr. Pink] Why should anyone tip at Starbucks? It's just coffee. It might be appropriate to tip if you're a regular customer who orders some weird crap, but I just want my mocha frap. Don't give any crap about how you're pissed on at work. Nobody's forcing you to work there. You work in foodservice. It's a given that you're going to take crap. Are getting taxed on those tips? I sure hope so, since waiters get screwed twice by the tax man. [/Mr. Pink]

It's weird how people will routinely tip some people, like the cute waitress at TGI Fridays, but would never dare to tip the lowly gas station attendant. It's ok to be either way, but just be consistent.

I know your secret already

I might visit starbucks once a month.

We get free coffee/tea/hot chocolate @ work. I usually make the Poor Man's Mocha:
1 Cup coffee
1 Package instant swiss-miss cocoa mix.

Cheap, & free!

this is the basic jist of it, most of the time tippers won't tip cuz they're arseholes

when they finally get a job that relies on tips, then everything changes
