We have 10 in the Phoenix area. No, you're not charged LD charges. We have 623 for towns west of Phoenix, 602 for Phoenix, and 480 for those of us east of Phoenix.

One interesting note: area codes used to have 0 or 1 in the middle digit, before this local 10-digit dialing started. Not the rule anymore.

Up here in Canada we have a number of area codes where 10-digit dialling is the norm:

416/647 - Toronto
905/289 - Toronto suburbs, Hamilton, Niagara, Oshawa, Newmarket, Aurora
514/450 - Montreal, Montreal suburbs
604/778 - Vancouver, Victoria (lower mainland)
613/819 - Ottawa, Hull

FYI, this is usually done when an area code is "overlayed" on top of another. For example, the 416 area code was running out of phone numbers, so they just added the 647 code on top. This eliminates the problems of "splitting" an area into one with a new code, and one with the old code. With the overlay system, noone has to change their phone number. People who activate new service are the only ones who will get the new area code. All of this is what necessitates 10-digit dialling, because otherwise the voice switch would not know if you wished to call 416-xxx-xxxx or 647-xxx-xxxx.

Oh, and thereds, there is no toll charges for using 10-digit dialling. You never have to pay toll unless you start the number with a 1-xxx-xxx-xxxx. (800 #'s excepted) If you were to dial a long distance number without the 1, the switch will warn you and tell you it is a toll call, and to hang up and dial again.

Dude, I wanna move to the 404 area code. I can already think of cool answering machine messages reguarding 404 errors and not being home

Funny thing is years ago when I first saw a 404 error message I was like "woah, I'm getting an error message based on the dial up area code I'm in."

for reference I'm in the 770 Atl area code and at the time the internet was still relatively new and unknown to me, plus the # I dialed for my ISP was a 404 number.

Yup, took a little while to get used to, but it's second nature now.

My cell phone is a 678 area code, my home number is 770 and my pager is 404! You get used to it really fast. You would be suprised. I moved from a city that everyone all had the same area code and the first three digits were the same. You only had to remember four digits.

i'm always 10 digit for my cellular, regardless of where i am. austin is 512, i think that area code used to extend down to corpus (i know it extended somewhere but not where) and they changed it to austin only a few years back.

houston they did this stupid donut thing and made everyone in the outer ring change from 713 to 281, and 3 years later they had to overlay anyway. i hate the stupid, shortsighted bastards that thought up the donut idea.

I live in a suburb of Chicago... and they recently added a new area code. My area code is the same, but now I have to dial 11 digits to call any body, even local. 1-847-xxx-xxxx. pisses me off

In Blacksburg we still have 7 digit dialing. In the area from DC to Baltimore in MD we had to use 10 digits.

I live in washington state

I am in the 253 area code... to call my city and nearby cities, 7 digit dialing
to call seattle, which is a local call, I have to dial 10 digits because their area code is 206
to call tacoma, which is a long distance call, I have to dial 1-253

206 usually seems to be local and 253 is sometimes local, sometimes long distance...

425 is some other places around here, sometimes local, sometimes not
apparently sometime this year they are going to add another area code to my area and I'll have to 10 digit dial no matter what
