Been riding for about 4 or 5 years now, and I've loved every minute of it.

What: '97 Suzuki GSX-R 600 (looks just about like this)

Equipment: Matte black Shoei helmet, black Tourmaster GX vented gloves, black FirstGear Mesh-Tex Jacket

How often: Everyday, all day, 365/year...no car, so if I don't have a friend to take me around, out comes the bike. 10,000 miles last year, but probably about half that this time around.

As far as your first bike goes, I'd give another recommendation for the Ninja 500R. It's what I had for a year before my Gixxer, and I loved it. Fast enough when you need it, and forgiving enough not to kill you when you mess up. Engine size is pretty dependant on the type of bike you get, though. For a sportbike, anything over 600 when learning has the potential to be very dangerous, and even most 600's stand a chance of hurting you. Hell, I learned on a Ducati 900SS, and my current Gixxer feels just as quick (I do NOT recommend learning on a Duc, btw).

Definitely take plenty of time to get used to the feel of the bike and all. It takes practice (just like with driving) to get to the point where you can go through the standard motions and such without thinking, and that's what you'll end up having to do as soon as someone doesn't see you and merges into your lane, or turns out in front of you.

Good luck and safe riding to ya, and keep us all updated.

i ride w/ jeans, leather gloves and leather jacket....oh and a helmet of course

don't ride often enough

i would start off with a kawi ex500. those make great starter bikes. my wife learned on one of them, and moved onto a zx6r

I prefer a Honda Shadow VT1100 in the early 90s

Before I even had a license, I started going around the neighborhood in a Shadow 500 which is higher and not much with the forward controls. Plus it does not have much power. So after the taking the course, I went straight to an 1100 and have not looked back to anything smaller.

Though I wouldn't go for anything over 1100. IMO.

One of the reasons I quit teaching was that the Texas legaslature decided that if you took our class you could ride without a helmet.

Fvcking elected officials on their fvcking Harley's want to ride without a fvcking helmet.... AAARRRGGGHHHH

Yes students, I spend 45 minutes discussing proper riding gear, to the level of discussing recommended helmet colors, ride every demo wearing a helmet for you, am required to wear a helmet riding to & from classes, but when you finish our class you can ride without a helmet so some brain dead driver can make a left turn in front of you & you can die.....

Lets hear it for our elected officials.

Nah... we never got that here ... helmets are a must ... they didnt even recommend those flip up helmets because supposedly some had a tendency to open during hard impact. My class was ok... there were a couple obnoxious jerks... and some guy almost ran over someone but it was ok overall.

The only pic I have of my last creation. This was my first bike I bought new in 1972. I taught my 7 year old the ropes of building a bike with his project.

I guess I should take some pics of my stuff. Old hardware, but, errrr, interesting.

Nice bike. What do you ride now?

The Vol is no more, victim of a deer on a late night sleepwalking trip. My current ride is a 2001 BMW R1200C cruiser. Different kind of bike altogether, but I have yet to start slapping parts and paint on it.

Damn, I've been wanting a bike so bad lately, I haven't had a bike for the past 7 years. Think I'm gonna look into getting one within the next year if I can afford it.
