I'm pretty sure the standard was developed by Intel, they have spec sheets on it.

Let me see if I can find it...

That would rock Viper, hehehe I'm trying to win this little flame war over on dailyradar.com. This guy over there keeps saying Microsoft is an innovator and how they invented the optical mouse. Optical technology has been in logitech's trackballs for 4 years now. I proved him wrong with a Logitech press release, now he's moving on to claming USB was invented by MS.

This may have your answer(s):

WINDOWS HARDWARE ENGINEERING CONFERENCE, New Orleans, April 27, 2000 - New classes of high-performance PC peripherals are within reach with the release of the final Universal Serial Bus (USB) 2.0 specification. The technology is developed by the USB 2.0 Promoter Group, consisting of Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, Lucent, Microsoft, NEC and Philips Semiconductors.

ahh further down:

NEC is a key driver of the USB serial bus, leading the implementation of USB 1.0 & 1.1 in PCs and now the USB 2.0 specification with the world's first device based on the standard, the uPD720100 USB 2.0 host controller. USB 2.0 is an important strategic direction for us. The performance benefits USB 2.0 brings to the PC means our devices will bring greater value to hundreds of millions of users."

So at least MS didn't invent USB all by themselves. Thanks a bunch Viper.

That's just a quote from NEC stating that they have an interest in the development of USB... That doesn't mean a whole lot.

It says they were a key driver, wouldn't have mean they were working in conjunction to whoever was developing USB? darn it... gotta get this idiot back!

I believe Xerox invented the mouse. I'm not sure about the optical aspect, but DocuTechs have had optical mice (albeit with special gridded pads) since they came out in '90.

Xerox did invent the mouse but I wasn't sure about the optical. I'm pretty sure that Microsoft DIDN'T invent the optical mouse.

List of board of Directors...

<< USB Implementers Forum, Inc. is a non-profit corporation founded by the group of companies that developed the Universal Serial Bus specification >>

, so that's who this group is. And, ...

<< The USB-IF, Inc. Board of Directors is composed of the following companies and their designated representative Directors:
  • Compaq Computer Corporation- Ken Stufflebeam
  • Hewlett-Packard Company- Ed Beeman
  • Intel Corporation- Jason Ziller
  • Lucent Technologies- Kevin Lynch
  • Microsoft Corporation- Mark Williams
  • NEC Corporation- Takahiro Tokuume
  • Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V.- Tom Hafner
>>

Those companies would be the ones instrumental in developing it, I'd guess. As for specific people, I don't think we'd be able to find that out (easily).

Apple was one of the first to use USB - in their iMacs, but it was Intel that developed the chipset and Compaq that implemented the standard, both part of a consortium.

Found it. Developed by a consortium of major firms including Compaq, DEC, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, NEC, and Northern Telecom.
