What he/she referring to is the Rec. 2020 spec for 4K/UHD which specifies a wider color gamut.

Where he/she is mistaken is the assumption current 4k TVs implement this standard in full:

Just got the LG 55" 4k for Christmas for $899 plus tax using a Microcenter coupon. 1080p gets "upscaled" a little, actually looks a bit better. The LG uses an IPS screen too. Really no 4k content but was upgrading a 10yo JVC projection DILA so couldn't pass up the $899 price when it still is $1399 at Bestbuy and Amazon.

It is the size offered.

I wouldn't touch a 55 inch 4k TV, but if someone offered me that 55 LG OLED for cheap I would jump on it despite having much bigger TVs currently.

Right now many of the deals and models are around 55-60 inches. 5 years ago the focus was 42 inches. Hopefully in 5 years the focus will be over 70 inches.

If you want one of the best TV's on the market today, picture-wise, and you can't afford an OLED, then you will end up with a high-end 4k. They are what's left, unless you can still find a Plasma somewhere.

1080 upscaled does look good.

Too much compression for a streaming website. I've tried 4k Amazon Prime and it didn't look much better than 1080p streams. It's very similar in picture quality to be honest. You'll probably need the actual 4k disk to have the same quality as Best Buy displays.

4K Netflix looks very good if the show was produced in 4K. Marco Polo looks great. The Blacklist also looks good, but is the previous season that I have already watched.

I do still watch 99% 720p, 1080, and 1080p content though.

Did you upgrade to the 4k monthly pricing structure? Those shows already look good in 1080p but I don't pay for 4k Netflix stream, so I can't compare.

I still think Marco Polo in 4K is a little better, but close ups in The Blacklist are very good. The different nature footage and Smurfs 2 look great. Smurfs 2 is a terrible movie though. I tried watching the movie Hitch from 2005 in 4K, but it wasn't too impressive.

lol I don't remember if its still there but Ghostbuster 2 and Philadelphia in 4k was not good quality wise. Heck Jaws in Blu Ray was better (picture quality wise)

I'm with you on that. It's gonna be awhile before I go the 4K route. VT50 here. I want OLED with all the kinks worked out. We've got a long way to go before content catches up as well.

Broadcast TV compression is horrible, especially if you aren't pulling it OTA. I would bet that 1080p from Netflix would look much better than what you have on the DVR, and maybe even similar to the 4k version.

1080i has been good for the most part on Netflix. There have been a couple of movies that had noticeable compression artifacts, especially during dark scenes.

The difference at 4K is instantly apparent though.

This Christmas I decided to upgrade to 4K in the kitchen to please the wife. It is a perfect fit in there because I need a LED for that room, and I only ever ran the kitchen gui at 30fps, so today's 4K can be a longterm solution despite current limitations. Looks pretty good for 1080p, and 4K stuff looks incredibly detailed. Honestly though the best part is the retina effect for Kodi GUI text.

Bought the Samsung UN65HU9000FXZA yesterday at Best Buy. Partly for the superbowl, and partly because my 50" Panasonic plasma (a 50PZ700U) was just too small for the space it was in (a 24'x24' room). I managed to snag an open box but unused set (prior customer never took it out of the box because he decided to go with the 78 inch) for $3400, which was $599 lower than the sale they were running. Came with the UHD pack and the one connect box.

Setup was a breeze and all in all I am quite happy. There is a noticeable difference in the picture (vs my Panasonic plasma), but in general the picture is quite good. In fact, the picture is startlingly good when viewing high quality blu ray content (tested it with master and commander and Avatar). Saw no evidence of judder while watching the superbowl yesterday either. Blacks are quite good as well, though not as good as my old Panny.

TBH I would much rather have purchased the slightly smaller 64 inch FX8500, but I could not find one in stock at any dealer I trusted, and many of the online dealers that have stock were selling them at what appeared to be a hefty premium. It was also questionable as to whether the FX8500 would fit in the built in I have. So . . . no deal there.

Like I said, I'm pretty happy. Hopefully I can get a few hundred for my old panny, and bring the total price of the new set down to right around $3k.
