verdict on this game?

I really enjoyed the game and am hoping to see an expansion of some sort in the future. The level art, music, and voice-acting were great, I thought. The combat was fun, with different enemies requiring minor variations in how you deal with them (some have defenses you need to break, for example). The combat slows down for a very brief moment to give you a chance to dodge a strong attack, which looks cool as Alice transforms into a cloud of butterflies when dodging.

I was fine using a mouse and keyboard through the entire game, though I will say that I found it easier to NOT use the auto-focus and just point Alice toward the enemy with the mouse when possible. I mainly used auto-focus to deflect projectiles from a particular enemy back at it.

The story definitely kept me going, wanting to see what happens next. It helps to collect the memories throughout the level. I don't think they affect the story, but the cut-scenes with Alice's own memories will make much more sense if you do. Many cut-scenes are done in a sort of 2D storybook style, where the characters and environment are rendered as paper cutouts.

I liked the platforming and didn't really get bored of it; however, a couple of levels went on longer than I think they needed to. The London areas were vastly under-utilized, I thought, acting mainly as brief walks to the next Wonderland levels. I would have liked to see a couple of the Wonderland levels reduced in length a bit and the London areas expanded. A few of the areas in Wonderland are somehow inspired by things Alice sees in London immediately before she enters those areas. For example, you can find a poster for a circus act involving someone called "The Walrus Man", which is where the Carpenter and Walrus come from.

Other than the length of the Wonderland and London areas, my only other issues with the game are the technical problems that have already appeared in this thread. Texture pop-in happens every so often and I have had Alice get stuck on small changes in elevation (she would have to jump over a tiny ridge, for example). The mouse control felt floaty at first, but messing with the .ini files seemed to help that (or maybe I just got used to it). I did also change the framerate cap while I was there. I actually did not run into any major problems with the game, but having to change .ini files isn't something that a gamer should have to deal with. Also, I don't get why the game has to letterbox the viewport. I set my resolution to 1920x1200 and it gets boxed to 1920x1080.

Overall, I thought the game was great, though keep in mind that I do like platforming. The art was no small part in my enjoyment, and I even bought the art book from Amazon. I do hope a patch is released soon that takes care of the bugs because it does sound like some are running into problems that are ruining an otherwise great experience.

I'm on the stupid doll house level... it really is annoying!
You're almost there .. those 2D side-scroller minis almost done me in; but OK, so the damn game is addictive. i finished it.

It is hard to score - if you were expecting a FPS, it is a 6/10
- if you are a platformer, it is an 8/10

Great - very adult - story with a ending that i saw coming like a train from amile away
.... still very good .. editing the .ini saved my own sanity (there is even a file to "allow mature language" in the engine)
^_^

Well i liked the game i would say an 8/10.

I played it on PC with xbox controller which worked fine, it reminded me of crash bandicoot or croc in gameplay. Only problems i had was with having to modify that .ini file to get 60 FPS and some enemies were unkillable, 1 crab i encountered was completely invincible i had to reload from the start of the chapter. Looks like a minor problem with the blocking mechanic some enemies used. Also i felt like blocking was a bit unneccesary for alice with the umbrella or it should've been usable without using aiming mode, aiming mode wasent that useful except for blocking or vs air enemies.

Good sequel to the original IMO  Not watered down appeal to the masses crap like i was expecting.

Also
anyone else find the psychonauts guy? Ive never played psychonauts but im pretty sure i found the corpse of psychonauts main character in the queens castle

yeah, the level art design is awesome. But they could've done more with it... The platforming does get a little tiring... But I must say, the combat is pretty fun... well it's almost there.... has the feeling of your typical god of war games...

I think I'm constantly having the feeling that I'm lost, and don't know where to go. So I'm constantly shrinking myself--which gets old REALLY quick. But I never have a straight direction on where to go...

I enjoyed the game overall, but I wouldn't play it again due to the frustrating jumping sections.
I enjoyed the combat, yet I also had a random enemy become unkillable(mine was a small blob) and had to restart at the checkpoint. I aimed manually most of the time, except for the flying blobs.
The camera switched to a weird angle in the middle of doing some precise moves (jumps, etc), and aot of the time the camera was just too close, almost changing to first person when trying to jump on tiny platforms!
I used a 360 wireless controller, changed the .ini to 60FPS, and made the weapon upgrades cheaper.
The 2-D platforming was fun at first, but got old quickly, especially near the end of the game.
The best thing about the game was the presentation as others have noted. It was definitely different, even if it wasn't the best game it could be.
I enjoyed the ride, but I was also glad to be finished with it just so I didn't have to make any more ridiculous jumps!

How do you get lost?

Although there are many paths to the same goal - you can accomplish things in a different order - it is pretty hard to get lost with arrows pointing you in the right direction.

i think the game is supposed to explore "madness" .. you are supposed to "shrink yourself"

I enjoyed the game overall, but I wouldn't play it again due to the frustrating jumping sections.
Editing the .ini of the GravityZ from 750 to 350 took care of mistimed jumps.

Did anyone bother to change Alice's default costume? You have about 6 choices including "Siren" ... after the story i couldn't handle even the idea of the nude patch.

Yes, you float longer. However, be careful. You cannot just float through the game; the devs made sure of that . . . Alice will die if you skip some key jumps. So there are parts of the floating cards for example that i had to play at standard gravity (you cannot adjust the gravity in-game; you have to restart to have it take effect)

i hate platformers. i hate jumping. The last platform game that i played was American McGee's Alice. The last game before that was Castlevania (Atari 5200, i believe)

Yeah .. i used to like them - years and years ago .. even when i got my first PC
-- Atari 800XL .. i played Miner2049er and Castlevania on them.

back them i had time - i could perfect my timing and not care that i had to start over and over .. before i had a tech site to run
--- now i get all the great games to evaluate them and i barely have time to play them
(it's a trade off - i love my job)

Just going to bump this since I don't need a whole new thread for my question.

So I've played about a half hour or so of this game and am loving it, but I am getting some major slowdown in certain areas when there is a tonne of crap floating around and black ooze on the ground.

Any thoughts on what setting I can lower to help this without killing the graphics much?

I am running at 1920x1200 on a Core I-5 2500K @ 3.3GHz, 8GB RAM, and an HD6970.

Thanks!

KT

Weird, your setup should be more than enough to run the game smoothly at all times.

Yeah. that's what I thought too and why I cranked everything, but it definitely gets quite sluggish in parts. :hmm:

I really enjoyed this game, I still need to finish it. My GF enjoyed it even more and got most of the way through.

Original American McGee's Alice was great too. Know what other game thinking of that one reminds me of? Heavy Metal FAKK 2.

I think they came out around the same time, used same Quake 3 engine or something...

That's because the game uses GPU PhysX. Since you are using a 6970, the game will be doing all PhysX on the CPU. You need to turn PhysX to low.

This. Don't worry, you won't miss out on much. So far as I remember, PhysX really only affects the fluid dynamic and Alice's hair/dress.

I love the atmosphere of the game, but something about it just isn't grabbing me like the first one did. I love the ridiculous off the wall humor, horror, etc... I'll try and play it some more tonight.

if you have an extra x16 slot, get a cheap nvidia card and install hybrid physx mod, i enjoy the blood/goop it adds to borderlands 2. i might have to pick up this game as well!
