I'm really not sure what I want to do with my system right now. Most likely I will still buy AMD, because I am probably just going to upgrade my 939 board. All I know is that there are a few new games coming out Q4 06/Q1 07 and I want to be able to play them a reasonable level above 30 FPS. Which means that I could upgrade my 3700+ to a now-cheap X2, and save the rest of my money for a new video card.

I might pick up a dual core combo from Fry's and build a system with my old 3500+ in it.

Until we see the prices of actual available chips, I wouldn;t say they are cheaper.

I'll be building a new rig somewhere around September or October, and I'll be going with AMD and AM2 because I do not have the cash for C2D. I'm held to $900 with an LCD, and I can't clunk down nearly $350 on an E6300 with a decent mobo. I've got everything so tightened that I couldn't set down $15 more for anything at all- meaning a C2D mobo/CPU combo would have to be $240 or less for me to be able to afford it at all. People on very tight budgets will probably still go AMD. Any budget gamers like I find the CPU sort of negligible- you really want a better video card above all else.

Better question: Since most people are already running AMD systems, how many are going to upgrade their CPU a lot sooner than expected because the massive price drop is just too enticing to pass up?

Guess that pretty much sums up my feelings on the subject.

Some advice please.

I currently have a 3500+ 939 chip. I am interested in upgrading it because of the proposed price cuts. I have been thinking of a X2 5000+ but I see they only come out in AM2, so the option then is a X2 4800+. I see a lot of people taking about the X2 3800+.

I use my machine mainly for DC stuff, so I will fully use the second core.

Suggestions?

Yes, get the 3800 and OC it to X2 5000 speed.

Zim you assume they will be around the same price/performance. But history is an instructive predictor of the future and as long as I can remember AMD has led price/performance on all fronts except recently in a select few cases - e.g. the value line intel dual cores (805/850 etc) which AMD never tried to compete with. Many people buy on price performance so there you have some market for AMD just as 805's sold well.

Second is the vast majority of Joe Six Packs out there who don't need 170 FPS in FarCry and are only looking to do thier stocks on line, write papers, and other general fluff any CPU about 1.5-2 Ghz can handle with ease. AMD does and will offer cheaper solutions for those buyers "just looking for a computer".

If you mean here? Were Power users and those who want to best reside? No one

Yep. They're called "fanboys".

Moron. Troll. Take your pick.

PS I'm talking about you. Not people who still plan to use AMD products.

I am buying a 3800 single core for 939- such a low price! I don't need a top of the line system or the newest thing. Don't want a new socket system until they work out al the bugs

Yeah, kinda like those "fanboys" who continued to buy Pentium 4/D after the Athlon 64 was released, right?

The real question is, "Who is going to buy Netburst now?"

I'll be buying either a 4200+, 4400+, or 4600+. I already have a compatible 939 mobo, 2GB of DDR400 RAM, and an ati X800XT AIW AGP card. To switch to DDR2 / PCI-E / Core 2 Duo would be quite a bit more expensive than just the CPU cost, not to mention all the time dorking with Windows and reinstalling - and the performance benefit would really be marginal for most tasks.

I haven't seen the price drops anywhere yet though. I expect it'll be a week or two before they really start filtering through.

The real question is, "Who is going to buy Netburst now?"

The answer is: everybody who isn't an enthusiast. Dell, HP, Gateway and friends are going to keep selling tons of NetBurst-based desktops for $500 to everybody who thinks "ooooooh, it's a Pentium, it must be good!"

The sales of boxed NetBursts, though, are probably going to drop dramatically, not that they were probably that strong in the first place. Some ppl with a substantial sunk investment in non-Conroeable LGA775 hardware may pick up a cheap upgrade, just like the 939 AMD people. (Grr, why isn't it possible to get Cedar Mill P4 in 478?)

I got an XP 2500+ Barton and I'm probably going to upgrade to an X2 3800+. I already got the ram(ddr), and S939 heatsink and AMD mobos are so much cheaper than Intel. E6300 would be the best option but I can't see myself buying a way more expensive mobo and new ddr2 memory(2x1GB) to get a little bit better performance. Any upgrade an I should see a great improvement over my Barton since I don't game that much to at all now. I'll be using mainly for coding/compiling and some video encoding. Heck, I still have an XP 1600+ that I'm still using with an ECS K7S5A mobo and it serves me fine.

ZOMG look at all the power you save going Conroe... overclocking the X2-3800 to FX-62 will make an INFERNO (140W consumption vs 70W for the Conroe XE)!!! You might save upfront, but in 2-3 years, the power bill will easily save you loads of money.*

/thread

* For all the fanbois during the P-D 805 launch.

Yeah...the power bill isn't going to save you crap. PSU still pulls whatever it's pulling. Which doesn't even make your power bill increase very much anyway.

That strategy hasn't been working out too well for Dell of late, the only large Intel-only OEM. I really doubt it will get any better in the near future.

I plan to upgrade my existing AMD system and keep my ram etc.

My brother is buying new and has a low budget for a system. He managed to squeese teh X2 3800+ (AM2) in there and will be enjoying dual core.

If I can get a 5000+ for 939 at a decent price, I'll be sticking with AMD. To switch to Conroe would require about $600-700 for the performance I expect outta my machine.

The 5000+ is only for Socket AM2. The best you can get for a decent price on S939 is the X2 4600+ for $240-250.
