with the price drops I'm buying a X2 AMD chip, not a AM2 socket though as I'd rather go Intel, but right now I don't want to upgrade my memory too. I also want to wait for the dust to settle and bask in the goodness of the pricing wars.

You don't need a new CPU since your CPU is already an X2 and faster than a stock 4600+(a stock 4600+ is 2.4ghz). A 4600+ probably wouldn't OC much higher, so you're good to go. Save that money for the next generation of video cards.

And even if the 5000+ was out for S939, it wouldn't be worth it as you would only gain 100 more mhz.

Yeah, this is my master plan as well. I can't afford DDR2-1067 for the time being, so I'm going to ditch this aging NetBurst rig I have in favor of a s939 setup, and upgrade to Conroe when DDR2 prices/yields improve.

lol DDR2-1067?

All you need is 533 for 1:1, 667/800 for performance/overclocking headroom, and 800+ above if... you bought DDR600+ before.

I already got my AM2 3500+ and I love the CPU. Overclocks like no other and is rock stable.
Yes, I'll be missing out on the Conroe, but I'll get Merom in a laptop in a few years, so it's not a big loss considering that my computer now is already very fast.

I am definitely leaning towards the X2 5000+ now. The Conroe MBs are way overpriced IMO and for a non-overclocker like myself I think the 5000 will be more than sufficient for me.

I will still have to wait until the Conroe is actually out before I make the final decision though. If there is decent availlability and they are not overpriced I could still end up with a Conroe.

I think I will be happy either way.

It seems that a few articles are saying everyone will switch over to Conroe and the sky is falling for AMD. Of course most of us realize this isn?t true. It is a heck of a performer though.

The bleeding edge guys will go all out on on a Conroe system, if I had the money for an all new system I certainly would.

A lot of guys will just go for the cheap upgrade of what they have and wait for the next gen AMD chips and the resulting price drop by Intel before purchasing a whole new rig. Im in this group.

Some guys will remain loyal to AMD for a number of reasons.

?Joe Home User? will buy whatever HP/eMachines/Dell that best buy has on sale this week.

Many people are also waiting for Windows Vista before they make a new PC purchase.

It seems for ZipZoomFly some of the Intel and AMD price drops have come into effect.

the 4200+ and 4600+ as well as 940, 950 are close tot the new pricing set forth by both companies.
