Just curious, I guess. Discuss. Just wondering about the market and the economy and how it impacts sales for a great OS.

I'm not using it because the fucking piece of shit assfucking lowlifes at MS decided that anyone with a computer older than a few years can't use their fucking great new product. If you have a mobo that uses Promise controllers, it's impossible for 7 to see your hard disks. Great. Fucking pieces of shit. Great OS my ass. Microsoft can use a spoon and eat my filthy goddamn asshole.

Isn't your issue with Promise or your motheboard's manufacturer, not M$? Afterall, there's a lot of hardware that XP doesn't support either.

Well, if I had to pay full price, I'd probably hold off for a few months. But MS has been running a series of really good deals. For students, the 30 dollar price still stands until January 2010. A month back, anyone could have it for a discounted price as well. I imagine there'll be another another discount for non students before too long as well.

If I get a free copy by hosting a party I will use it, otherwise I'll continue using Linux and XP on my machines. I'd rather put the money toward my newborn son than software upgrades.

I've already gotten it through MSDN. I'll be installing it on my desktop system this weekend. It's been running without a hitch on my MBP for about a week now.

Even though I will get Windows 7 Ultimate free at the launch event, for now it will not be used. My computer hardware (Dell 8200) is not up to running the new OS, mainly due to RAM (SDRAM - Rambus) and it does not the newest Directx-9 .. So for now, it stays on XP which all my programs are compatible with.

Whenever I can afford my next build it's going to have windows 7 on it.

I am however going to still need an xp machine for my music studio due to discontinued hardware that I am using.

I can't quote a time.. all that I can say is that I have 9 weeks of unemployment left so I might be working for pennies for a while.

If I was going to buy then it would be OEM Win 7 as I play PC games. If it was not for the games I would just use something like Ubunutu or MINT for free

If you can get the Home Premium Upgrade at initial promotional price of $50 like earlier this year, you can just install Windows 7 RC1 and upgrade from there.

You would need to create images of activated RC1 and presumably clean Windows 7 upgrade install, upgrade from RC1 only works on initial install, I believe. Probably work best where basic hardware will be stable over time.

Compared with what Apple offers, prices are still absurd, but competition is a good thing (Mac hardware prices have come down, and Microsoft OS upgrades, too).

Find a friend who's going to college, and get them to order it for you for $30. If you can't afford that...

Except that you're still violating the license so you might as well pirate it and save the $30.

I'm going to upgrade to Windows 7. I've used XP since like forever, completely skipped Vista (too slow and not much of an upgrade), but from what I was told, Windows 7 is much faster than XP. As for the cost, I heard a family pack was only around 135

I have Win7, i clean installed to a different hard drive on my home rig. Which is about 3 - 4 ish years old. Its only a 3.4GHz HT with 2GB RAM and a (now) 250GB SATA HDD. I like it so far, no problems or incompatibilities other than my G15 keyboard software, which, even though it told me it wasnt for my copy of windows, installed fine when i told Windows it was intended for XP. I imagine most incompatible software will work in this manner, tho im not sure about all. The promise deal really is an issue, but it will most likely be added later on, i cant imagine its a permanent thing. That post was most immature.

Bruceb, i'm sure Win7 would work just fine on your system.

Perhaps it would. But the cpu is only 1.8GHZ and the only way to try it would be to get another hard drive, as I won't risk losing the existing install. And then there is the memory issue. It needs at least 1GB to work properly and the old Dell only has 512MB of Rambus SDRAM.
That memory is hard to find and very expensive (over $100 for 1 stick of 256MB, I would need 2 of them or 2 512MB sticks to add to my existing 2 256MB ones)

Win7 requires 512MB minimum, not 1GB. (not referring to what most would consider appropriate for the OS, im referring to what the OS considers the bare minimum amount needed for it to install and operate)

I also may be able to help you out in the Rambus Dept, i just acquired a computer someone who was moving out of state did not want anymore and it has Rambus memory.
