Possibly a better poll that would give you more accurate/inclusive information could have been:

YES/NO
Card Brand/Part
Northbridge Chipset (and possible Motherboard brand/part)
Operating System
Driver Version
Install Process (I.E. clean OS install after adding card, removing previous drivers and adding card, just adding card and installing new drivers, etc., etc., etc....)
Problem Description (if they are having problems)

And then compare the results of the people that have no problems with the people that ARE having problems.

As for myself, I currently do not have an ATI card but am planning on possibly buying one very soon, and have found this thread at least somewhat useful (though somewhat incomplete for my needs). Keep the data coming, however

I had a hell of a time with my Powercolor 9700. No matter what I tried, I'd get checkerboarding, tearing and video corruption. I decided that that particular card was just a POS and RMA'd it. I really wanted to give ATI a shot, so I bought a Crucial 9700 Pro. I figured I'd get a card made by a reputable company with great customer support. The card from Crucial has certainly lived up to my expectations. I installed the card, installed the 3.2 cats, and it has been humming along ever since without a hitch. So I guess the answer is:

Powercolor 9700
Bad problem
8RDA+

Crucial 9700 Pro
No Problems
8RDA+

ati radeon 32mb sdr
POS dell optiplex gx100 (hehe)
win98se

only one problem, pre-catalyst drivers
textures would flake out on grates and ladders in avp2
fixed by newer drivers
oddly enough, older drivers worked better than the few right before catalyst
ati radeon 8500 (64 meg version)
abit kr7a-133r and abit kx7-133r

Yes, well that OS is a POS (even though I am forced to use it on older games). I have the same combo, and under the MSI implementation it was bad under 98SE, but worked under 2000 and XP. I finally upgraded to a ASUS A7N8X deluxe, and all my problems went away in 98SE. I wouldn't blame that on the card. You can't use state of the art hardware on a dinosaur OS, and not expect to have problems. But I must say, if ASUS can do it, why can't MSI ? What is your MOBO.

9700 pro A7N8X deluxe, NO problems. (98SE,2k,XP)

9500 128 Radeon, ECS K7S5A, No problems (98SE)

Motherboard is Asus A7N8X. Win 98SE never gave me problems with nVidia cards, and I'm not changing my OS just because the ATI drivers are pathetic. I'm certainly not changing to that hugely bloated piece of spyware that's XP (especially since I change hardware quite a lot). I may go for Win2k if I have to, and I'm happy that it will run all the games I want - but I see no reason to pay money for that when 98 works perfectly for me.

If I buy a state-of-the-art card that officially supports Win98SE, and I pay a lot of money for it, it had damn well better work properly. And when it doesn't, I expect some kind of response from tech support (not a series of identical 'read the faq' replies). The problems I'm getting (refresh rate limits in Windows and driver install crashes) are extremely common if you follow the various forums. The refresh rate problem is without a doubt the fault of ATI and would be trivial to fix, but they can't be bothered. I'd have to think very carefully before buying an ATI card again.

"Yes, well that OS is a POS "

What are you on? 98SE is far better than XP. Though 2000 is definitely the best of Microsofts [pathetic] operating systems.

Although I highly agree with your sig. I hate Microsoft and would greatly prefer linux, but it doesn't do half the stuff that I want to. Oh well...

Anyways, back on topic. It seems from this thread that the yes:no ration, respectively, is 30:43. SO roughly 41% of people have problems with ATi drivers/etc. Pretty pathetic.

The installation process is probably what's causing 90% of these peoples' problems. I had issues initially with the 8500le but that was because my box was soo screwed up from tons a vid card installs (not the vid card itself). A quick format/reinstall fixed all that.

no way. i used 98SE forever and it was great for it's time, but it's really dated and XP is soo much better. What do you think makes 98se better than xp?

It lets you change your hardware without having to re-register.

It doesn't report to MS what software you have installed; what searches you are doing; your job, income, 5 previous addresses and those of all your family members, every time you hit the return key ;-)

My feelings too - I submitted a very indepth report only to be told to follow a bunch of "basic" newb faq's - I wrote them a response which was not complimentary to say the least.

Not heard from them since for some reason......

I may be the lone fish against the tide here, Win 98SE was the worst POS from M$ that I ever used. Nothing but trouble with it on several machines - revert to - Win 98 - no problem at all, Win ME great, Win XP generally good but I was not 100% convinced of it.

I went back to Win ME from Win XP and I'm very happy - although I do miss some of the features of XP.

So if you can please just post a simple yes or no and what product it is and what motherboard chipset (not the motherboard model) you are using.

I'll start;

YES

ati tv wonder pci

intel 845PE

I have a TV wonder and an 845PE with no real problems... only problem is that the Media Center is kinda crappy.

A few lingering problems with my TV Tuner, but nothing too serious. Also can't hit 200MHz FSB, but I think its a combo problem along with my nForce2. No problems with games though, as everything runs like a dream. Just picked up FreeLancer, which I read there were some problems with. I didn't experience anything of the sort, as the game looks and plays like a movie. Awesome game so far.

looks like everyone doesnt pay attention to the big gray "ghosting" line going up their screen, that 30% of ati owners are experiencing

I'm not flaming, I'm just wondering if you notice it, as I havent seen any pics, or screenshots of this happening.
