Saturday morning my son and I are going to replace the driveshaft and exhaust bellows, gimbal bearing, and possible the U Joints if needed on our Volvo Penta SX outdrive. Started hearing a little growling noise the other day on the lake and since I've never had it apart in the 2 years we've had the boat, it's time to take a look. Exhaust bellows is torn, but that's ok. The driveshaft bellows doesn't look torn or anything, but is weather checked and cracks are developing in the folds of the bellows. At any rate, doing this on a VP outdrive is said to be tons easier than on a mercruiser so hopefully its a quick morning job and then we can focus on installing the dual battery system and rest of the new stereo system.

Got the boat done. Super easy, much much easier than a mercruiser alpha one outdrive. Volvo really knows how to make a good dependable outdrive that is easy to perform maintenance on.

So my starter on the 330ci finally gave up, I started to disassemble the car to get to it, but don't know if I should just give it to my trusty mechanic to do the job. I simply don't have the time...

I had a noisy throwout bearing in the wife's car. So, changed that, the clutch, pressure plate, and flywheel, flushed the coolant, and did the timing belt. I miss doing this more often. Lots more pics, if any interest.

the belt must be easy with the engine out

It was quite. These cars the engine comes out easy. For the timing belt I was already pulling the fans and radiator, so a couple fuel lines later the entire engine is easily out for the clutch stuff too. Much nicer than working under the car all day.

I replaced the broken taillight and installed a dash cam in my Speed6 last night. Today I'm hoping to get the climate control assembly replaced (most of the buttons aren't working anymore).

It's easy with the engine in the car too. Hooray for the flat 4!

The only part that sucks about doing it in the car is the bending over. I suppose I could lift it with jack stands, but that's trouble too. I'm just not 18 years old anymore where I can be leaned over in an engine bay for a few hours and not feel it. On an engine stand while I sit on one of my comfy garage stools is the definition of comfort.

Tomorrow, daughters oil, probably help my son with his oil change too. Clean the Shelby undercarriage and put her up for winter.

Tomorrow I'll pull the battery out of the riding mower and put it on the Battery Tender. I may not enter the garage again until Spring.

Swaping to snow tires today. And rehabbing an old John deere snow blower. Welded in a new peice where the scraper goes. Waiting for the new bearing for the second stage to pit back together.

I winterized the camper... Not much wrenching involved in that, but it can be a pain at times. Serviced the Jacks and made note of all the other maintenance items to do or buy first in order to keep her ready for next season.

started pulling the trans out of a second gen 4x4 dodge Cummins on Sunday, got it off the trailer and on the hoist, drive lines and T-case out. I am helping out a friend who is helping out another friend. The guy with the lift just had shoulder surgery, wants to help, but really can't do much so I left before he hurt himself. Tomorrow I will get it out on the floor and see what's what. Sunday I bring the beetle back for a clutch, and then bring My 3rd gen 3500 back for a clutch. Did I say I was a little clutch poor?

Finally putting the finishing touches on the work I did over the weekend. Didn't have the right AC belt, so installing that and doing the leak check then charge on the refrigerant. Then on the road to go visit for dinner.

Replaced the front bumper cover on my '07 Focus. (Took a low speed trailer hitch in 2010, it's had a gaping hole ever since.) Since I had no idea what I was doing, I took my time, was careful not to break anything, etc., it took me 6 hours, but I only lost one screw. I could see where somebody who knew what they were doing could do it quick, though.

(While I had it apart, I also polished my headlights, touched up a couple spots in the engine bay where the paint had worn through for some reason, and repaired/glued some damaged plastic bits that have been knocking around since the same accident. And everything I put back in the car got throughly cleaned, because holy crap.)

Definitely something that is probably easier to do with a lift. And definitely something that is probably easier to do if you remove more parts than the guides tell you to. All the 7mm fasteners on the bottom of the car were rusted and rounded down to about 6.5mm; the only thing I had that would turn them was a 4" long 7mm box wrench that I think I stole from my dad about 20 years ago. The 6 screws that hold the cover to the fenders are accessible from underneath - but would be a lot easier to get at if the car were about 8 feet up in the air and the wheels, splashguard, and air intake/filter were removed. I managed, but I was pretty tempted to "mod" it so the screws went in from the top on reassembly. (I decided not to, mostly since I was tired and hungry.)

Incidentally, these guys do pretty good work, and their eBay store sometimes has sales. (My bumper cover was $163, painting and shipping included, which is less than any scrapyard I could find.): http://www.mbiauto.com

Finally got around to replacing the rear brakes on our WRX. Not sure why they're shot while the fronts still look great. All were installed at the same time originally.

yeah that's just backwards to most brake wear patterns. I do have to say, the Honda Pilot we had was sized perfectly, the rears were just the right size to wear out at the same time as the fronts.

I've seen air bubbles or other defects in braking systems cause un-even wear like that. I'd suggest investigating more closely...

I traced low rear brake wear to the tiniest of seeping leaks in a brand-new brake caliper on my old Miata, and un-even side-to-side wear on my RX8 brakes to a bubble one side of the rear brakes.

I did a flush a few weeks ago. Nothing strange other than dirty fluid. I also did a thorough inspection of the front brakes and all pads were evenly worn; same as the rears. I can't find any evidence to suggest something is wrong.

The "but" is the brakes on this car are not stock. The fronts are from a 4th gen Legacy GT so the rotors are bigger. The rears are from an early Outback H6 and they are also larger in diameter (but use the stock pad). So maybe the front/rear proportioning is a bit off for this setup? I haven't done much investigation so it's hard to say.

that's probably the difference. you can do a little for that with different linings. Fun stuff.
I got to the end of the first tank after clutch change. Despite all the hooning I could fit in on wet roads, I still got better than 46 MPG.
