Other than the greats: Founders, Lincoln, my favorite is Teddy Roosevelt.

This man was not helped to greatness by serving during a time of crises, like FDR or Lincoln. (Not to diminish them in any way.)

TR was a great President because he made decisive decisions about a number of different things that made this country so much better:

Panama canal, brought the hammer down on the industrialists, national park preservation for posterity, Food and Drug act, etc...

This guy is a model President IMO, only, most Presidents aren't bright enough to make those types of decisions and have them turn out so well.

Teddy FTW

JFK. But he tried to do so much good that he was killed by the bad guys.
He wanted to put an end to the cold war, dismantle the CIA, take control of the creation of money away from the banks, destroy the mafia,...
Had he not been killed, he would very clearly have been the greatest president of the 20th century.

I think you should reconsider how easily you leap to absolutist conclusions you absolute cannot know.

Gerold Ford has always been one of my favorites. His whole life was put under a microscope because of Watergate. No one who ever sat in that office has ever been so thourghly examined. And he was squeaky clean.

He also gave 48 hours to give up the Myaguez (sp?) or he would send in the Marines. At the end of the 48 hours, the Marines went in and took it back. Nobody else screwed with the U.S. while he was in office.

I also believe he made decisions based on what he thought was good for the country. He knew he would be condemned for pardoning Nixon, but he knew that the scandal would paralize the government if it continued to grind on. He willingly took it on the chin to get the country moving forward again. I can't imagine many other Presidents doing that.

He showed courage in pardoning Nixon. It was also one of the worst decisions in the history of the Presidency. Presidents know they can act without regard to the rule of law.

Lots of good presidents who shaped the country. Wahington, Jefferson, and most of all Lincoln who
kept it together in a civil war. Nor should we overlook Andrew Johnson who restrained the war hawks from totally decimating the defeated confederacy and allowed the country to mend at peril to his own career.

In terms of modern Presidents both of the Roosevelts--Teddy and FDR.--did much to shape the USA.

But the number one worst in my mind is George W. Bush-----who in five short years has really screwed everything up.

Considering your stances on every subject that's brought up in these forums, I fail to see HOW your favorite President could be Teddy Roosevelt. You share zero political and personal traits with the man.

William Henry Harrison, because he wasn't there long enough to screw anything up. Oh and he promptly died due to his case of pompous-arsehole-tis, which is a disease the makes you so self centered that you think you're so important that you finish your speech in the rain even when no one is listening, or even present.

TR was my favorite, Lincoln was the best, closely followed by Jefferson... last century in terms of importance (not personal pref) FDR, Wilson, TR, Truman, Regan.

JFK is the most overrated. His crowning achievement was the cuban missle crisis which which I believe many people could have solved (though not nixon). and he had more negatives than most. Bay of Pigs was a mess, but under his presidency the CIA got a reputation of meddling which is still hurting us (any dictator can say the CIA did something and the people rally)...though we aren't nearly as bad as we were then. I mean come on the CIA hasn't tried to overthrow a government via revolution since El Salvador/Nicaragua, and arguably hasn't tried to overthrow anybody since then. But JFK tried to overthrow 4. Oh yeah and he should get at least 10% of the credit for Vietnam. If he wasn't shot I think we would remember him as a mixed bag. Now RFK could have been great...

I think you should back the hell off and let people express themselves the way they see fit.

Jackson?

Well, being a dyed in the wool Democrat, I'd have to say Kennedy. He created a lot of positive change in the brief period he served.
