around 7 or 10 years ago (can't remember exactly) I did some research and asked a lot as to what was the best antivirus for gamers, and without any doubt, it was NOD32 antivirus FTW, very light on the system (even with the older systems at those times) and yet extremely effective! it was like magic! It always got the best awards from Virus Testing Labs and was loved by performance addicted people.

I have always been a fan / license holder for many years and still hold an ESS license for 3 years but I don't even have it installed.

I feel NOD32 has become heavier on the system, yet less effective! the exact opposite of what it was before.

If you look at the lab test results from various sites, NOD32 alway is at the bottom of the list, doing much worse than the competition (even the free solutions)

This is very sad news for me as I loved the simple and light interface, how light it was, and the fact that I felt secure running NOD32 on my computer.

I don't feel teh same anymore and would take any other free solution rather than install NOD32 seriously...

anyone feels the same or am I the only one?

I gave it many chances, v5 and v6 just keep going from bad to worse. I wonder if they Eset spends most its efforts and money on its digital marketing and ads now rather than improving on their products. I for one know that this is my last Eset product and no longer recommend them to anyone, in fact, I am not using my 3 year / 3 user license for ESS no more

PS: I am posting this here rather than the NOD32 subforums as I don't want biased comments from ESET owners. I want to know how all the others feel

Wow I had no idea. I have always trusted and used NOD32. After looking at the tests now, it seems I will have to change to bitdefender.

Don't install that crap man! I have a 1 year license that I have stopped using

I find avast! Free Antivirus to be the best of em all. Free, light, has auto sandbox feature for those fishy files, and has god detection rates according to Virus testing labs unlike NOD32

Kaspersky Internet Security / Bitdefender Internet Security are amongst the worst in my experience...

Here is my personal experience (not technically, but as a real world user):

1- I bought a 3 year license of Kaspersky Internet Security and installed the latest 2012 version. I used it for a month and while its firewall is top par and it is the best Antivirus out there, the performance hit was far beyond imagination! I mean, if I would double click on an EXE setup file, it would literally sit there thinking for about 30 seconds before it decides to open it. I also didn't like how slow my system performed even though I have a top specs system as you can see from my sig. So i Refunded my license.

2- I did more researching online and found Bitdefender to be one of the top performing AVs these days so I thought why not, let's buy a license. I bought a 1 year license with them and it made my internet crawl like a turtle! Browing webpages was horrible even on my 30 bmps down/ 3 mbps up connection, furthermore, it caused many crashes for me with Firefox 14.0.1 (I know it may not be Bitdefender's or Firefox's fault but just saying, I had to install Firefox 15 Beta 2 to get the random crashing fixed), it also caused my MPC-HC to crash randomly while playing videos.
Worst of all, if you go to their forums, you will find a Myriad of problematic posts with 0 replies! It seems Bitdefender is so busy focusing on marketing and advertisements and forgot about support for their customers! Horrible technical support and community forums. I ended it up uninstalling it even though I still have my license.

3- I had Microsoft Security Essentials installed on my small sister's computer and she got a few viruses, what is worse, is when you click clean, even though they weren't really viruses just some false positivees in her software folder, MSE wasn't able to delete them, it simply kept displaying the pop up that it found a virus on and on again! I quickly uninstalled that crap.

4- Avira was my favorite in the past but recently with all the ads that they spam you with and annoying pop-ups, in addition to including the ask.com toolbar in their setup, I have lost complete trust in this company although they kept me protected for years in the past. What a shame.

5- After having tested many security suites / antivirus programs, I am now happy using avast! free antivirus. It is very good, has good detection rates, and very light on the system. I once tried running a program that it didn't recognize and it quickly launched it in a sandboxed mode to prevent any harm to my system! it's awesome!

Add to the above choices SUPERAntiSpyware Free to scan for the harmful/tracking cookies, and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free to do a monthly scan just to be on the safe side and you're more than good to go!

I was a faithful user of NOD32 for the better part of a decade. I would recommend it to anyone who asked about an AV. I bailed on it a couple of years ago after I got a nasty Trojan. I could no longer ignore how it had lagged behind the other major AVs including some of the free ones.

I really wish Eset would get their acts together because Ive gone through a bunch of AVs and still haven't found one as unobtrusive and as light on resources as NOD32 was.

Avast is my go to free AV. But what I don't understand is why Kaspersky isn't used more for a payed AV.

Kaspersky is my goto AV when I need to disinfect a client's PC.

Kaspersky cant be beat protection wise. But there is a lot I dont like about the program either.

I use Opera and Bit Defender completely borks Opera as well. BD has a sleek interface and good protection but its way too heavy handed. I'd recommend Zonealarms free AV over BD. It uses Bit Defenders engine so it has excellent protection. Buts its not quite as obtrusive (still clashes with Opera though)

Of the ones I have tried I liked F-Secure the most. Great protection and light on resources. G-Data is not bad either, very unobtrusive but the interface needs work.

After the way Webroot SecureAnywhere performed in the latest AV Test I may have to give it a shot. It had the lowest impact on system resources of any AV tested other than NOD32 and its detection rates were very good.

For infected PCs Ive become a fan of Emsisoft. I have seen it pick up some things that Kaspersky couldn't completely clean. And its very fast.

i was a big fan of NOD32 v2. it was light and fast and didnt clog up the system like most others. v3 was 'ok' but not as good as v2. i stopped using it after v4. just seems to have slowly gone downhill since v2.

i see nobody mentions panda. dont know how good it is, but seems kind of interesting with that cloud based scanning and whatnot.

heard good things about norton reasonably fast and good detections. apparently a couple years back they rewrote the entire software so its not as terrible as the older versions.

im glad someone brought this subject up, not so much nod32 cause i have never used it but i noticed mse sucks big time, i got 4 to 5 viru's just this month and mse didnt detect some or prevent them, the last straw was that FBI virus that asks you to pay money and turns your webcam on as you're looking at this webpage with a giant FBI logo.

How did it bypass my antivirus and operating security thats suppose to ask me for permission when i install something, who knows. All from clicking a link in my web browser

Im really impressed with avast so far, its extremely light weight, doesn't seem to interfere and it has all the info of how its been protecting my pc, you can generate a report every month of what its been doing.

Glad you mentioned MSE, that POS so called antivirus is a joke that millions of people over the internet swear by and *think* they are protected. Why do you think most AV comparative sites don't even mention MSE? it's because it's NOT an antivirus, just an upgraded Windows Defender, which again, is useless crap

Discussion on another forum
Norton, McAffee, and Kaspersky are the best at malware detection, keep what you've got. MSE is getting better. If you don't do anything potentially iffy online, then it should be good enough as well.
berryracer says:
MSE is the WORST antivirus in the world! Don't come near that crap!

I have said it many times but noone believes, MSE is one of the worse antivirus programs out there! Yes it is light on resources but it sucks big time in protection!

I have had 2 viruses crawl twice on to my system even though I am a safe user. Furthermore, it sucks in deleting any threats

AV-TEST - The Independent IT-Security Institute: Jul/Aug 2012

Avast! Free Antivirus FTW!

I didn't personally have MSE installed, I had it installed for my little sister who goes to Games sites for kids

when I visited home, I checked her PC and she had a popup from MSE saying that it detected 2 viruses, they were not viruses, but rather, false positives (I think one of them was a program that could extract your Office product keys / windows product keys so you can back them up incase you didn't have them), so I thought anyway, let me just delete them through MSE and get done with it since I never used those 2 apps anyway, MSE did its thing and I thought greaT! now we're done

then a few mins later, that same pop up from MSE comes up again saying that it dected them again, and it kept doing it! I restarted, went into safe mode, but MSE kept reporting them. and I am 100% sure they are safe as they were not detected by my previous Kaspersky Internet Security nor Eset Smart Security nor Bitdefender Internet Security

That's my simple story and it is just false positives, I can only imagine how one might be infected but never know since he has that piece of crap called MSE that many people believe in. But tests online show the opposite

Just go to Wilders Security Forums and see what people think of that junk
