Yup unions. Same here for LI & Westchester NY. A bottom 5 performing district has teachers over $100k median.

http://data.newsday.com/long-island...rict=central islip|o:c=2012_2013_pay;d=true;| (they spelled administrator wrong in the link haha)

Our Kindergarten teachers made $125k/yr. Our school taxes alone are $10k/year. I've said this a handful of times here.

Pay based solely on longevity is flawed because it promotes indifference year to year. Plain and simple. How often do you hear union workers being referred to as lazy? Wonder why that is.

Pay based on longevity is fairly common in govt jobs. Your pay is based on your grade and the number of years you have been in that bracket. Your actual performance is not really relevant. So it isn't really a Teacher issue, it is more of a Govt job issue. Look at Police Officers, pay is based on time in grade and what level of Police Officer, IE are you a PO I,II Detective etc. Your actually ability to do a good job isn't relevant.

same story abroad.

Yep!

All we ever hear in the media in the UK is how teachers are hard done by.

The fact that I know several teachers and I wouldn't rank any of them in the top 30% of people I know for intelligence or work ethic (being generous there). Doesn't matter though, unions can happily ignore reality and push whatever agenda they want.

I heard a fact a couple of years ago which said that the last time a teacher was sacked for poor performance was about 20 years ago. I have also read several "letters to the editor" in the times/telegraph from head teachers who basically say the only option for poorly perfoming teachers is to make their life as hard as possible and offer them a glowing reference whaen they ask to leave.

I don't have kids and probably never will due to a medical condition my wife has but I would happily pay increased taxes to double all teaching salaries as long as teachers were actually rated on performaance and let go when they failed to meet certain standards.

At the moment it is a job for life that almost any lazy idiot can do with 0% chance they will ever get sacked.

Yes, I'm aware, which is why I said union workers. It's a huge issue and your explanation obviously isn't excusing it.

Great idea in principle, but every performance measure I've seen doesn't take into account how many total idiots you have in your class or how much academic support they get at home.

Wife has a masters and I think she gets around 50k/year. She typically works 7-4, later if it's a school activity night, puts in 1-2 hours a night making custom lesson plans for level of student in her class and then grades papers on the weekends. Top that off, we somehow buy school supplies for her room all the time.

QFT

The wife is also a teacher, similar hours, similar education, similar salary. Anyone who says teachers don't work extra hours either is flat out wrong or they know crappy teachers.

In addition to purchasing most of our own supplies, she funds her continuing education requirements to keep her license. Basically $3k-ish every five years for 5 semester hours of classes.

She works harder than me and I make significantly more. But she does get June, July, half of August, Christmas break, and spring break off.

All in all, its not a bad gig.
